Surfing in the Desert! Good evening from the middle of the Abu Dhabi desert! OK, well that is not exactly true, ENW is currently sitting inside a rather hot tent and sipping some iced soda, but we are still in the desert! To be precise we are somewhere between Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in the Al Khaznah Desert and outside the temperature is a cool 17C as it has just gone 7am.

Why is ENW in a tent in the desert? Well this afternoon after our visit to the SZGMC we met up with an adventure company who transported us here to do some dune bashing. This involved 2 hours of off-roading in a Toyota roadster that took ENW over and down many sand dunes, including some that were over 30 metres deep!

We were next given some sandboards and spent the next hour trying to ‘walk’ down some of the same big dessert dunes. ENW did, we have to admit, fall over at least 13 times. However we are now enjoying the cool desert night air whilst viewing with some of our fellow surfers…

A Morning Ride By the Sea

(a) We have wondered down to Fun Ride Sports which is situated towards the southern part of Abu Dhabi’s central Zone 1. (b) Here we are going to hire a mountain bike and hopefully cycle along the whole 8km of the Corniche - hot weather permitting of course. (c) It is another very hot and sultry day in Abu Dhabi, but ENW has decided to eschew the comfort of our air-conditioned hotel room and take a stroll down the Corniche - an 8km road that runs along the western side of Abu Dhabi.

(a) The other attraction on the Corniche is the Marina Hall Flag - which is one of the three highest flag poles in the world! (b) Up until the late 1970s the Corniche was simply a beach where dhows and ships used to anchor in order to unload passengers and cargo. (c) But since then the area has been developed, using reclaimed land from the sea, and now the area contains fountains, parks, shops, cafes, restaurants and of course cycle paths!

(a) So, ENW really needs to find a nice little cafe, with plenty of shade and ice-cold drinks! (b) The weather is once more boiling, and a quick look on our smartphone’s weather app shows the temperature as 38.7C - and it is only 9:14am! (c) You now find ENW cycling along the Corniche on our rather impressive Trek FX3 hybrid bike, which is similar to the one ENW owns back in Hiroshima.
