The past few weeks we have had a very large problem with students being tardy to school. Each day we have around 20 students – 10% of our population – who are late to school. It has come to a head today with 27 students who were tardy today. This is not acceptable. As I have said in the past, I understand the occasional situation in which a student or students may be late to school – I know how crazy homes can be in the morning. I talk to the students a lot about getting things done the night before – lunches packed, uniforms laid out, showers taken, backpacks ready to go, etc. Next year, it will be SNA policy that 3 tardies will be equal to 1 unexcused absence. Ohio law states that a student is “Habitually truant” if they are absent for 5 or more consecutive school days, 7 or more days in one month, or 12 or more days per year without a legitimate excuse. “Chronic truant” is defined a student who is absent for 7 or more consecutive days, 10 or more days in one month, or 15 or more days in a year. With our new policy next year, these could apply to a number of students! We will employ the services of the Hamilton County Educational Services Center to follow up on ANY and ALL attendance issues. Once things reach a certain point, the situation will be out of my hands!

Coming up on June 5 and 6, the SNA school board will be meeting with Mr. Bruce Vincent regarding the beginning of a Strategic Plan for St. Nicholas Academy. The board is very excited to meet with Mr. Vincent and start this journey, but we would like to ask for input from you also! The school board would like to ask for all to think about and offer practical, workable suggestions to this question:

What can St. Nicholas Academy do within the next few years to become stronger and have a more secure future?

You can email me your thoughts and I can forward them on, you can email or talk to any member of the board, or send something to school so we can forward it on. Thank you for all of your thoughts and ideas! Thank you all so much for your thoughts, prayers, and kind words regarding my surgery coming up in June. It will be a tough recovery, but we are confident that it is the right thing to do. I ask for your continued prayers as the process is ongoing.

Thanks for all you do!!

May 13, 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, During the month of March, grades 3, 4, 6, and 7 took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) while grade 2 took the Cognitive Abilities (CogAT) test, and grade 5 took both the ITBS and CogAt. We have received the scores and there is a Parent Report that I am sending home today with this letter. The reason for this letter is to help you better understand what is on the report. Grades 3-7 will receive scores from the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. This test consists of the major subjects of Reading/Language, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Students are assessed and then their scores are reported in percentiles. The report does a nice job of explaining the NPR rank and score. The NPR is the National Percentile Rank and ranks students compared to other students who took this test. For example – if a student receives a 55 NPR score, they scored higher than 55% of other students who took this same test. The PNPR is the predicted score based on the CogAt test explained below. For your information also ELA stands for English/Language Arts. Then everyone will also have a CogAt score while the 2nd grade will ONLY have a CogAt score. The Cognitive Abilities test has 3 sections – Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. The Verbal section measures flexibility, adaptability, and reasoning with spoken materials and in solving verbal questions. The Quantitative test uses figures and concepts related to problem solving skills in math and other disciplines. Finally the Nonverbal test evaluates reasoning abilities using geometric figures and shapes. From this test we get the Standard Age Score (SAS) and other percentile ranks. The Standard Age Score compares your student’s performance with other students his/her age. The “average” Standard Age Score is 100. The Percentile Rank is explained above. The stanine score uses a 9-point scale with an average of 5, 1 being the lowest score and 9 being the highest score. Please keep in mind that this test is a measuring tool that we use as a school to see what we are doing well and what needs to be worked on in the future. This was not a Pass/Fail test and will not appear on any Report Card or Progress Report. You may keep this for your files at home as we have stickers that are put in the students’ files here. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and the report.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF SIXTH GRADERS!

URGENT IMMUNIZATION REMINDER Ohio law has additional requirements for immunizations. Your sixth

grade child MUST have one additional vaccine before they can enter the seventh grade. Please check your child’s records to be sure that he/she has the following:

Tdap Vaccine – 1 dose Tdap offers adolescents and adults added protection against pertussis (whooping cough). It may also prevent the transmission from adolescents and adults to infants. It is important to get an early start on updating your child’s immunizations. Please send an updated written immunization record ASAP to the school. The school must have written documentation of this vaccine prior to entry into the seventh grade.
