“Paying It Forward” Project Proposal
Project Title :Caring for the needs
Project Contacts
Organization Name: Agathians Shelter Contact Person : Ms.Inthira Address : No.22, Jalan Kelah 8/6, Seksyen 8, Petaling Jaya 46050, Selangor. Phone Number : 0379541680 Project Statement :
We have selected an orphanage home located at Petaling Jaya to conduct
our community service project. We were planning to design something
which is useful for them. According to our observation, we have noticed
that there were few spots in the orphanage that can be beautified. Besides
beautifying the site, we were also trying to create an awareness of caring
for the environment at the same time. We will do some mural painting on
the front wall. Besides, we will also create a hanging plastic bottle plant
box at the metal railing nearby. Through all the activities that we have
mentioned, we will include the kids in our activities to create the
interaction between us and them. Therefore, a bonding between us will be
created as well.
Project Objectives :
1. To create awareness of caring for the environment
2. To induce creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental
circumstances among the orphanage
3. To allow us to have the opportunity to contribute to the community
4. To emphasize on the importance of having a environmentally sustainable
design for the orphanage home
5. To be able to understand and explain the principles of sustainability
from environmental and social perspective
2
Proposed Method for the designs
We have come out with different ideas to beautify the site. Firstly,
we will install a hanging plant box on the metal railing which is
located next to the front wall where the front entrance is located
at. We will reuse the plastic bottles as the plant box for the
plantations so that we won’t be creating any waste in the end of this
project. The reason we want to beautify this metal railing by
hanging plantations is because we want to create an awareness of
caring for the environment for the children. Children will learn
how to care for the environment when they are needed to take care
of the plants.
Besides that, we will also do a mural painting in the front wall of
the orphanage. The theme of the mural painting is caring for the
environment. Reason that we choose this theme is because that we
want to create an awareness of caring for environment for the
community. Besides that, we also want to create an interesting
Agathians Shelter's Logo which will attract the attention as the
previous logo is dull in color. Therefore, the kids will start to get
a feel of what a responsible citizen should do regarding their
surrounding environment. The paints that we use for this mural
painting will be environmental-friendly paintings.
In conclusion, our ideas for these designs come from one major
theme, which is caring for the environment. We hope that these
designs will be able to contribute to this home.

Material_ Paint
Few types of paint are used for our mural painting. We have used
water based paint and pelaka for background and drawing, and
gloss paint for the text. Those paints have some properties which
benefits the people and environment.
Water based paint:
- Low volatile organic compound (VOC) levels.
VOCs are the toxic fumes emitted from most synthetic-based paints
and are the reason behind the smell of paint. VOCs can be harmful to
people and the environment, not just throughout the manufacturing
process, but also during and after paint application, and have been
blamed for various health complaints. Therefore, paint with low VOC
will not have strong smell or low odour and less harmful to people
and the environment.
- no added lead and mercury
you can be assured that the common health complaints such as
asthma attacks, eye irritation and other respiratory problems
associated with excessive exposure to paint fumes will be a thing of the
past.
- investing in environmentally - friendly paints makes sound
economic sense in the long run.
- fungus resistance and is produced with environmental-friendly
ingredients
- accredited with Singapore Green Label and SIRIM Eco-label
legislation
Pelaka is a fast drying water-based colour
which can be used for arts and crafts,
painting hobby, wall, model work, wood,
fabrics, advertising and decoration purposes.
Gloss Paint is water resistance, UV
protection, high gloss retention and anti
termite.

Before Transformation
The two areas of our selection are the metal fence and the front
wall of the house. For the metal fence, our plan is to beautify it by
installing plant boxes using recycled plastic bottles to be hung on
the fence. on the other hand, the front wall of the orphanage is to
be repainted with mural paintings. The theme for the painting that we
are focusing on is caring for the environment.

boxes.

transformation.
28
The transformation
The main purpose of our whole project is creating awareness of
caring for the environment towards the children living in the
orphanage. The planting of flowers using recycled materials
inspires the children that even discarded items can be used to
beautify something at a point if used correctly. The theme of the
mural painting also encourages the children to live in harmony
together with nature.

Interview
1) Person Interviewed: Agathians Shelter Children
Comment: Overall, the children like the mural painting especially
the small kids. They preferred the animal drawings the most. But
there are a few animal drawing that they do not like.
2) Person Interviewed: Coordinator of Agathians Shelter
Comment: He is satisfied with all the work that we have done.
Besides, he can see that we have put a lot of effort in doing the
mural painting and the hanging plastic plant box. The mural painting
is much more attractive than the previous one and the hanging
plastic plant box is very creative in design.
Conclusion
Overall, we are very happy to be able to participate in this project.
this is because we have been given a chance to do something
meaningful to the society while promoting caring for the
environment. Never before that each of us has did something that
will forever be remembered in our minds. Lastly, this is truly a
project that truly shows what we can do as future architects and
thank you for all persons who have assisting us in our project. May
the GOD be with you.

2. We would like to do a mural painting on the wall in front of the main entrance. This is because we found out that the original mural painting on the wall is already fainted. Next, in response to the Plastic recycling month, we would like to reuse the plastic bottles to create a hanging plant boxes which can be hanged at the metal railing or the cement retaining wall located beside the playground. This is important as we are trying to encourage people to reuse recyclable materials in a creative way. We also found out that the morning glory plant that is intended to provide shade for the playground is not working. So, we will replant a better plant to replace the morning glory. 3. The duration of this project should take about one week which is from 17/5/2014 to 21/5/2014. We will conduct the work from morning to evening, which is roughly from 10am till 4pm. Below is the timeline of what we will do according to the date:

The end of the project. 3. For all the materials that are required in this project, we will try to look for sponsors from the community and I would like to have your permission to use your letter of approval in looking for sponsorship. 4. We believe that the children of Agathians Shelter will receive benefits from this project. Children will have a whole new look to their home which will sure enhance their mood.
