overview of the environmentalsustainability strategy 2012-2014
Glyndr Universitys Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2012-2014 provides a strategic ramework that will
inuence and shape the organisation so that it will be recognised as demonstrating best practise in environmental
and sustainable excellence.
Glyndr University is committed to understanding and managing its impact on the environment and thereore
this strategy will also help to strengthen and drive orward the ollowing activities:-
The Integration o environmental management into the Universitys governance
The Improvement o procedures or ecient use o resources
The establishment o management systems that will drive perormance
The creation o a sustainable culture and ethos through sta, student and community engagement
The Environmental Sustainability strategy has been developed alongside complimentary strategies such as
the Learning and Teaching Strategy, Estates Strategy and Communication Strategy. It has also been written in
alignment with the aims and objectives o the Welsh Governments Business and Environmental Action Plan or
Wales.
MISSION
Glyndr University strives to be a Market Led, Student
Centred University o International Signifcance Open to
All.
Our Environmental Sustainability Strategy seeks to
support this mission by striving to make the University
a more environmentally aware, energy ecient and
cost eective Institution that meets its environmental,
ethical and social responsibilities.
VISION
Glyndr University aims to become indispensable as a
signifcant, relevant and expert partner in regional and
national economic and social development.
This Environmental sustainability strategy sets out the
vision and key objectives or the next 3 years, building
on progress to date and brings together the Universitys
existing policies, commitments, sustainability themed
strategies and associated delivery plans.

The University has defned a set o core strategic themes as articulated in the Strategic Plan 2009-14.
These are:
A. Financial sustainability, planning, and eectiveness
B. Responding to the economic needs o Wales
C. The transormation agenda, reconfguration and collaboration
D. Developing higher level skills or WalesE. Reconfguration o teacher education
F. Widening access, participation and progression
G. Welsh language strategy and Coleg Federal
H. Aligning education and training with the uture labour market needs o Wales
I. Developing research excellence or Wales and the commercialisation agenda
J. HE international and building the capacity o Wales to compete internationally
The implementation o the Environmental Sustainability Strategic Plan will always be inuenced by the Universitys

Aim
To use energy more eciently, to reduce the Universitys carbon emissions through ecient and
responsible use o energy, and contribute towards UK government targets o an 80% reduction in
carbon emissions by 2050.
To achieve this aim, our objectives are:-
To communicate with sta and students and other stakeholders about the importance and1.
value o carbon and energy savings in achieving the Universitys strategic aim
To produce a carbon management plan or increased energy eciency2.
To develop and reurbish the Universitys estate so as to minimise additional3. carbon costs
To monitor and progressively reduce overall utility (water, gas and4. electricity) consumption
throughout the University
To monitor and progressively reduce the volume o scope 1, 2 and 3 -5. namely air and business
travel by road , waste and water emissions defned as the Universitys carbon ootprint
To develop an understanding o and capture other scope 3 emissions,6. including wider sta/

Horticulture WalesA dedicated team at the Northop campus are looking to improve the use o local, sustainable produce as part o its mission to
develop one o the Welsh economys most vital industries.
Promoting horticulture rom small growers to major frms, Horticulture Wales is leading the way in ensuring the industry is moving
with the times and reaching its ull potential.
Funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund or Rural Development, the team work hand in hand withthe industry to help them improve and modernise processes, as well as educating the public about the range o produce on their
doorsteps.
A key project has been the Grow to Love campaign, which allows businesses to beneft rom marketing workshops and study toursto help them promote local produce, as well as producing marketing and inormation material to support its aims.

To reduce the environmental impact o our operational activities and to make a positive
contribution to the local environment through the management o our estate.
To achieve this aim, our objectives are:-

The ollowing objectives relate to the work o the Estates department and Campus Services,
working together with support rom the Health, Saety and Environment team. As work is at
an early stage within some o the themes, objectives here relate to reviewing the baseline and
establishing systems rather than achieving specifc environmental targets.

Glyndr University Racecourse StadiumIn August 2011 the university bought the Racecourse stadium, home o Wrexham FC and the Crusaders rugby league team.
Since then the university has carried out repair and improvement work across the stadium, covering areas rom health and saetyto customer satisaction.
Sustainability has been at the oreront o the universitys thinking in relation to the stadium, and water saving measures have
been introduced in the urinals in two o the stands.
A major project was the replacement o the ageing boiler in the stadium with a brand new Hanworthy oil model. The boiler is 87%
ecient, compared to just 48% or the previous, 30-year-old boiler.
