ENVIORNMENTAL PROBLEMS IN INDIA

1) THE GROWING POPULATION IS PUTTING A STRAIN ON THE ENVIORNMENT, INFRASTRUTURE & THE NATURAL RESOURCES

2) INDRUSTRIAL POLLUTION, SOIL EROSION, DEFORESTATION , RAPID INDRUSTRIALIZATION, URBANIZATION & LAND DEGRADATION ARE ALL WORSENING PROBLEMS

TYPES OF POLLUTIONS

1) AIR POLLUTION- its impact & sources of air pollution

2) WATER POLLUTION- its sources & effects

3) PLASTIC POLLUTION 4)POLLUTION DUE TO BIOMEDICAL

WASTE

AIR POLLUTION

Page 6: Environmental pollution

1) The WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION estimates that about 2 million people die as a result of AIR POLLUTION 2) The reasons of AIR POLLUTION are:- (a) EMISSION FROM VEHICLES (b) THERMAL POWER PLANTS (c) INDUSTRIES & REFINERIES

3) Fine particles or microscopic dust forms coal or wood fires & unfiltered diesel engines are rated as one of the most lethal forms

Sources Of Water Pollutants

1) Sewage treatment plants2) Injection wells 3) Some Industrial sources

EFFECTS OF WATER POLLUTION1) 80% of urban waste in INDIA ends up in the

country’s rivers .2) A growing no of bodies of water in INDIA are

unfit for human use & in the RIVER GANGA holy to the COUNTRY’s 82% majority is dying slowly due to unchecked pollution.

3) Much of river pollution comes from untreated sewage. Samples taken recently from RIVER GANGA shows that levels of fecial coliform, a dangerous bacterium that comes from untreated sewage, were some 3000% higher than what is considered safe for bathing.

PLASTIC POLLUTION

Page 13: Environmental pollution

1) Plastic bags, plastic thin sheets &

plastic waste Is also a major source of

pollution.

2) This not only pollutes the

environment but also chokes the drainage

system.

3) one very known example for this was during heavy rains in

MUMBAI(26th July 2005) where there

was no space for the water to go in the

drainage system due to the choke caused

by these plastic bags.

4) Several animals died by consuming these plastic bags.

5) From January 2011 sale of plastic or

polythene bags has been banned in the

vicinity of river or any water body

POLLUTION DUE TO BIOMEDICAL WASTE

Page 15: Environmental pollution

1) Pollution due to Biomedical waste is likely to spread disease dangerous to life and making atmosphere toxic to health2)In April 2010 a machine from Delhi University containing cobalt-60, a radioactive metal used in radiotherapy in Hospitals, ended up in scrap yard in the city. The death from radiation poisoning of a worker has highlighted the lax enforcement lax waste disposal laws in India.3) India being used as a dumping ground for hazardous waste, from foreign countries. 20 containers of goods were detained by the officials of Special Investigation & Investigation branch to the custom Department recently.4) Packs of broken toys, used diapers, empty perfume bottles, used battery cells, thermocol & coloured surgical gloves were found in the container could also lead to contamination & spread of communicable diseases.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION & CHRONIC DISEASES

The major burden of these hazards is borne by the lungs

Bronchial asthma & other allergies; chronic obstructive lung disease, respiratory infections are of the common problems with a

strong environmental risk.

This gaseous air –pollutant along with others noxious gases

emitted from the burning of fire crackers on the eve of DIWALI

FESTIVAL aggravates the risk of triggering an attack in 30mn

asthmatics in INDIA and also the potential to cause new cases of

asthma.
