Environmental Chemistry Industrial Waste
Wastes
Wastes are the substances or objects which are disposed of or are intended to be disposed of or are required to be disposed of by the provisions of the law.
Environmental Chemistry Industrial Waste
Industrial wastes
Industrial waste is the waste produced by industrial activity, such as that of factories, mills and mines. It has existed since the outset of the industrial revolution.

Classification of Industrial Wastes according to their Properties

Environmental Chemistry Industrial Waste
Biodegradable wastesBiodegradable waste is animal or plant matter that breaks down naturally with exposure to microorganisms, heat and oxygen.
Biodegradable wastes are generated by cotton mills, food processing units, paper mills, andtextile factories.
Environmental Chemistry Industrial Waste
Non-biodegradable wastes
Non-biodegradable waste is waste that cannot be broken down naturally either by air, climate, moisture or soil.
Non-biodegradable wastes are generatedby thermal power plants which produce fly ash; integrated iron and steel plants which produce blast furnace slag and steel melting slag.
Environmental Chemistry Industrial Waste
Classification of Wastes according to their Effects on Human Health and the Environment
Substances unsafe to use commercially, industrially, agriculturally, or economically that are shipped, transported to or brought from the country of origin for dumping or disposal in, or in transit through, any part of the territory.
Hazardous wastes
Non-hazardous wastes
Substances safe to use commercially, industrially, agriculturally, or economically that are shipped, transported to or brought from the country of origin for dumping or disposal in, or in transit through, any part of the territory.

Effects of Wastes
Affects our health.
Affects our socio-economic conditions.
Affects our coastal and marine environment.
Affects our climate.

Waste Management
Waste management means the collection, transport, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste materials to minimize its' consequences on humans and environment.
The improper disposal of wastes is one of the major causes of environmental degradation. Therefore, the management of wastes is of utmost importance.

Waste Management
Collection and Disposal
Domestic wastes are collected in small bins, which are then transferred to community bins by private or municipal workers.
From these community bins, these are collected and carried to the disposable site.

Waste Management
Collection and Disposal
At the site, garbage is sorted out and separated intobiodegradable and non-biodegradable materials.
Environmental Chemistry Industrial Waste
Waste Management
Non-biodegradable materials such as plastic, glass, metal scraps etc. are sent for recycling. Biodegradable wastes are deposited in land fills and are converted into compost.

Education campaign on waste management needs to be organised that includes an extensive internal web site, quarterly newsletters, daily bulletins, promotional signs and helpful reference labels within the campus of an institution.
