live on our planet, and the earth'sresources won't last forever. Butthere are lots of things that we

can do to help to look after ourplanet, and to make sure that theenvironment has a great future.

Environmentalism

can also be defined as a social movementwhich seeks to influence the political processby lobbying, activism and education in order

to protect natural resources and ecosystems.In recognition of humanity as a participantin ecosystems, the environmental movement

is centered on ecology, health, and humanrights.

An environmentalist

is a person who may advocate thesustainable management of resources andstewardship of the natural environment

through changes in public policy orindividual behavior. In various ways (forexample, grassroots activism and protests),

environmentalists and environmentalorganizations seek to give the natural worlda stronger voice in human affairs.

In Europe, King Edward I of England banned theburning of sea-coal by proclamation in London in1272, after its smoke had become a problem. But thefuel was so common in England that this earliest ofnames for it was acquired because it could be cartedaway from some shores by the wheelbarrow. Airpollution would continue to be a problem there,

especially later during the industrial revolution, andextending into the recent past with the Great Smogof 1952.

Environmental movement

The Environmental movement (a term that sometimesincludes the conservation and green movements) is a diversescientific, social, and political movement. In general terms,environmentalists advocate the sustainable management ofresources, and the protection (and restoration, when

necessary) of the natural environment through changes inpublic policy and individual behavior. In its recognition ofhumanity as a participant in ecosystems, the movement iscentered around ecology, health, and human rights.

Additionally, throughout history, the movement has been

incorporated into religion. The movement is represented by arange of organizations, from the large to grassroots, but a

younger demographic than is common in other socialmovements (see green seniors).
