    ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY

"Paying special care to living in harmony with the

    environment, treasuring life and nature

Protecting the Earth's priceless environment, showing

respect for all living things, valuing safety and security.

    "Contributing to society through science".

    Environmental Management

It is known that population growth and economicdevelopment are affecting the environment.

It will not be possible to manage the environmental

    crisis unless people.

Economic growth can come in conflict with issues ofenvironmental concerns.

Although higher rate of Gross National Product(GNP) is important, equally is the rate of regenerationof natural resources

Almost every organization is paying some kind ofattention to natural environment.

Commendable efforts of International agencies like -----United Nations Environmental Programme(UNEP) ,---World Bank,

    ---International Monetary Fund and

---United Nationals Development Fund make a strong case for the protection ofenvironment. and for maintaining a sustainablesociety.

    Global Environmental Problems

    The two major global environmental

    problems are

    Global warming

    Ozone depletion

  • 8/9/2019 Environment and Iso Standards

    7/28

    Global warming

increase in world temperatures caused by

    greenhouse gases(GHGs)

GHGs includes CO2,CH4, nitrous oxide, sulphuric fluoride

    MAJOR CAUSES

    Burning of fossil fuels

    Deforestation

  • 8/9/2019 Environment and Iso Standards

    9/28

    Steps to combat Global warming

Cleaning up coal leading to lesser pollution

More use of natural gas than coal as natural

gas has only half the carbon of coal and no

    sulphur.

Increasing use of renewable sources of

    energy.

Manufacturing fuel efficient vehicles. Deforestation reversal.

    Ozone Layer

  • 8/9/2019 Environment and Iso Standards

    11/28

    Ozone depleting substances

It has been found that chlofluorocarbons

(CFCs) destroy the ozone in the

    stratosphere.

CFCs can remain intact for years.

    The Halon family of compounds,

containing Bromine, are 100 times more

potent in destroying ozone than CFCs

  • 8/9/2019 Environment and Iso Standards

    12/28

CFCs are mostly used in the refrigerationindustry, as aerosol propellants, assolvents for grease or glue, as a

component of foam packing materials etc.

    EFFECTS OF DEPLETION OF OZONE

Leading to skin cancer and damage to human

    International Efforts towards

    Environmental Management

    Montreal Protocol

In 1987, 24 countries and later by 1990, mostof the nations signed an agreement, theMontreal Protocol, committing themselves tophasing out the production and use of ozonedepleting substances mainly CFCs

    Earth Summit 1992

UN convened a conference on Environmentand Development (UNCED) at Rio de Janeiro

in 1992 called Earth Summit Nations of the world committed themselves to

protect the environment and resourceconservation for sustainable developmentboth at national and global level

This was further reviewed for the progressmade after 5 years at New York in 1997 underUN and called as Earth Summit +5

Efforts at National level for Environmental

    Management

A number of acts/ laws have been framed/institutionsestablished, by the government in order to preserve theenvironment / control the release of pollutants, importantamongst these are The Environment(Protection) Act, 1986

    A notification on Coastal Regulation Zone, 1991 amended in1994 & 1997

The Water(Prevention and Control ofPollution) Act, 1974,amended in 1988

    The Forest(Conservation) Act, 1980 (1988)

Setting up ofCoastal Zone Management Authority, 1998

Setting up ofCentral Pollution Control Board and State PollutionControl Boards

    What standards do

Make the development, manufacturing and supply ofproducts and services more efficient, safer andcleaner

Facilitate trade between countries and make it fairer Provide governments with a technical base forhealth,

safety and environmental legislation, and conformityassessment

Share technological advances and good managementpractice

    disseminate innovation

Safeguard consumers, and users in general, ofproducts and services Make life simpler by providing solutions to common

    problems

    ISO 14000

ISO 14000 established in 1996 is an internationalstandard to provide all industries with a structure for an

    environmental management system.

Series includes 20 standards covering everythingfor environmental management

It does not need third party registration unlike

    ISO 9000

Does not have the force of law but companies willhave to be certified to ISO 14000 as a pre-requisite for

doing business in those countries that have adopted

    the standard
