Personal life Tata was born into the wealthy and famous Tata family of Mumbai. A prominent family belonging to Mumbai's wealthy Parsi community. He was born to Soonoo and Naval Hormusji Tata. Ratan is the great

grandson of Tata group founder Jamshedji Tata. Ratan`s childhood was troubled, his parents separating in the mid-1940s,

when he was about seven and his younger brother Jimmy was five. Their mother moved out and both Ratan and his brother were raised by their grandmother lady Navajbai.

He was schooled at the Campion School, Mumbai and graduated from Cornell University in 1962 with a degree in Architecture and Structural Engineering.

EARLY CAREER

Ratan Tata completed his schooling from Campion School in Mumbai. He completed his BSc degree in architecture with structural

engineering from Cornell University in 1962. And the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in

1975. He joined the Tata Group in December 1962, after turning down a job with

IBM on the advice of JRD Tata. He was first sent to Jamshedpur to work at Tata Steel.

In 1971, Ratan was appointed the Director-in-Charge of The National Radio & Electronics Company Limited (Nelco).

In 1981, Ratan was named director of Tata Industries, the Group's other holding company.

In 1991, he took over as group chairman from J.R.D. Tata. Under Ratan's guidance, Tata Consultancy Services went public and Tata

Motors was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

In 1998, Tata Motors introduced his brainchild, the Tata Indica.

On January 31, 2007, under the chairmanship of Ratan Tata, Tata Sons successfully acquired Corus Group, an Anglo-Dutch steel and aluminium producer. With the acquisition, Ratan Tata became a celebrated personality in Indian corporate business culture. The merger created the fifth largest steel producing entity in the world.

On March 26, 2008, Tata Motors, under Ratan Tata, bought Jaguar & Land Rover from Ford Motor Company. The two iconic British brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, were acquired for £1.15 billion ($2.3 billion).

Tata will be remembered for, 1998: The Tata Indica, the conglomerate's first passenger car, was

launched this year. The car went on to become the No. 1 brand in its segment within two years.

2000: Tata Tea, now Tata Global Beverages, acquired the Tetley group, the world's second largest manufacturer and distributor of tea. Tetley is the largest tea company in the UK.

2001: Tata AIG, a joint venture between the Tata group and American International Group Inc (AIG), marks the re-entry of the Tata group into the insurance sector. The group's insurance company, New India Assurance, founded by Dorab Tata in 1919, was nationalised in 1956.

2002: The group acquires a controlling stake in Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. VSNL was founded in 1986 and was the first Indian PSU to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

2003: Tata Consultancy Services became the first Indian software company to cross $1 billion in revenue. The company went public a year later.

2004: Tata Motors is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company also acquires the heavy vehicles unit of Daewoo Motors the same year.

2007: Tata Steel acquires Anglo-Dutch company Corus, the second-largest steel maker in Europe.

2008: Tata Motors unveils the Nano, the country's cheapest passenger car. It was initially dubbed the Rs. 1 lakh car, though it now costs Rs. 1.5-2 lakh.

2008: Tata Motors acquires the Jaguar and Land Rover businesses from Ford, and forms a new company, Jaguar Land Rover.

2012: Tata Global Beverages and Starbucks form a joint venture, Tata Starbucks Ltd, and open their first store in Mumbai.

Under his stewardship, Tata tea acquired tetley. Tata motors acquire jaguar land rover. Tata steel acquired corus which had turned Tata from a largely India-

centric company into a global business, with 65% revenues coming from abroad.

Achievement and awards

Honored with Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian awards in 2000.

Ratan Tata`s dream was to manufacture a car costing Rs 100,000. He realized his dream by launching Nano in New Delhi Auto Expo on January 10, 2008.

He is also the chairman of two of the largest private sector

promoted philanthropic trust in India.

Member Global business council on HIV/AIDS and the programmed board of the Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation’s India AIDS initiative.

He has also been conferred an honorary doctorate in business administration by the Ohio State University .

HIS STRATEGIES Promoted seven hi-tech businesses under Tata Industries in the eighties –

Tata Finance, Tata telecom, Tata Keltron, Hitech drilling services, Tata Honeywell, Tata Elxsi and Plantek.

Management consultancy McKinsey was brought on board to help with the reorganization.

Ratan Tata also paid attention to brand TATA. By 1998, there was a single group logo.
