India Wants to Play but Lacks the Right Way

By Amitesh Tyagi, Co-founder & Director, IndiaLetsPlay

India is a country of strange anomalies. We try to balance both indulgence and religion with equal dedication. We want to excel in multiple fields without a clear focus on one field. We spend more on junk food than on fitness but still want to stay fit . And very importantly, we have more than 1/5th of world's population but do not win even 1/5th of the Olympic medals year after year, not even close.

One of the factors attributed for the last anomaly above is lack of access to quality sports goods from credible sources to average enthusiast. While there are many quality products in the market but there are multiple challenges in the Sports retail market.

1. Sports goods retail market is largely unorganized: Sports goods continue to be largely sold by the neighborhood mom & pop stores. These stores have tendency of pushing more and more high margin products, not necessarily the right product.

2. Mushrooming of academies with 'businessmen' coaches: Large number of unorganized academies is mushrooming in the country where coaches start working as sports goods sellers, for an extra buck. There is a nexus between local retailers and these coaches.

3. Counterfeit in the market: The counterfeit market is thriving and eating away genuine goods supplier's businesses.

4. Lack of credible sources of product knowledge among consumers: Stockists, who are interested in volume game and not product knowledge, are holding the clutches of supply chain.

At IndiaLetsPlay, we are making an attempt to solve this problem by democratizing product knowledge and passing the power to the customers, so that they make informed decision about their product purchase. We are doing this by taking the following steps:

1. Building strong repository of product information in consultation with coaches, trainers, sports communities, suppliers and interest groups.

2. Enabling technology platforms to leverage this information for informed purchase by the average customer.

3. Building experience centers for the customers to 'touch & feel' the product before purchasing it .

We believe these steps would help in improving the Sports adoption in the country and we shall see a better performance in all sports and not just cricket.

Till then… Keep Playing!

My Story

By Anil Kumar Reddy, Founder & MD, Great Sports Infra

As with any new business, especially for a first-generation entrepreneur, I was looking

for a business idea that was innovative. While still in the US, I researched what would be

most suitable to introduce in India and came across a new generation of artificial turf

(FieldTurf) that did not need watering (unlike old generation AstroTurf) but was also

applicable for various sports, playgrounds, parks, play areas etc. Basically wherever

you need good natural grass but can't maintain it .

However, as the product was primarily engineered as a sports surfacing product, and

considering that there was limited investment in India at that time in sports

infrastructure, we had significant acceptance issues initially. We therefore re-

positioned it for landscaping use. It allowed for the product to be tried out in various

conditions, while we continued to educate the sports administrators, coaches and

officials about the various benefits.

The major breakthrough was our installation of a FIFA standard FieldTurf football field at

Chowgule College, followed by the iconic Salt Lake stadium, which later hosted the first

ever FIFA international match in India (Argentina and Venezuela).

Seeing its successful use at the highest level and with actual evidence that it provided

all the benefits we promised, FieldTurf was quickly adopted by many clients. To date,

we have installed almost 60 Lakh Sft of turf in these 10 years.

Gradually, we added other proven as well as innovative surfacing solutions to our

business to become a comprehensive turnkey sports infrastructure company.

Currently, we have executed projects in 5 countries and they are generally tested and

certified by world governing bodies like FIFA, IAAF, FIH etc.

Looking back, the fact that we adapted our business model to the Indian context,

relentlessly educated the key decision makers and backed it with the best products and

execution, are the keys to our success.

The Rise And Rise Of Belgian Sports

If Belgians could play only one sport, it probably would be football!

By Antoine Delcourt, Counsellor Economic Affairs,

Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium

Belgium's sustained endeavors in sports and sports technology have propelled it to the

forefront of international competitive games. Football in Belgium has always been a

top priority sport, epitomized by the Belgian team reaching number three on FIFA

(World Football) rankings. This was the result of a number of factors such as the

blueprint of the Belgian Football Association over several decades to spur the best

quality training and management standards. This permeated the Belgian sporting

consciousness through local clubs and football academies thereby revamping the

approach to sports management and training. Such turn of events have resulted in the

growth of sports in Belgium that was supportive and inclusive of all levels of athleticism,

be it for amateurs or those aspiring to be professional athletes.

Belgians are also very passionate about cycling. If a young person does not play

football, he could aspire to the likes of the great Belgian cyclists, such as Eddy Merckx,

Tom Boonen, Philippe Gilbert, to mention only a few of them. Belgian athletes also fair

extremely well in the field of hockey, tennis, Judo and swimming. Former world no. 1 in

Tennis Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and players such as David Goffin are all products of

Belgian sporting excellence. Similarly, the Belgian National Hockey Team with players

like Tom Boon, who played in India in 2014. These achievements can be credited to the

investments made in acquiring quality sports infrastructure, management, training

and merchandising.

Sports in Belgium has received support from all quarters including the federal sports

technology club which engages with firms active in sports and allied sectors AGORIA

and provides them with business intelligence, promote their products and services

abroad and aim to identify and create international business opportunities. They also

increase their members' visibility along with facilitation of internal & external

networking with key decision makers abroad. These conscientious efforts tied

together could be credited to the growth of Belgian sports.

Business of Sports

By Priti Srivastava, VP-Regulatory Operations, Reliance Jio

The business of sports is still a new concept in India, which has spread from the very

successful and lucrative cricket to other sports. One of the key issues which needs to be

constantly debated and worked upon is a robust Sports law in the country, the role of

the Sports authority of India, the National Sports Federations and their combined

deliverables towards regulation and policy in their respective domain. Lack of sports

culture and non-recognition of sports as an industry in India are among the many

challenges for the business of sports in the country.

What Indian Sports further needs is public private partnership (PPP) models, in which

sports management professionals are the one's driving the growth and development

besides the commercialization of sports, where money put into the sport can be earned

back for investors. For the above entrepreneurs and corporates need to create viable

properties, but also spread awareness and use education as a tool.

Further CSR in sports needs a big push in India to create a sports eco system. Especially

grassroots sports needs support to bring the children to sports in a fun way and then

develop the best available talent into professional sports persons. The CSR fund in

sports need to be diverted to work with schools, improve sports infrastructure, and

nurture sports talent by creating training facility for players and coaches.

Some school level grassroots programs have laid a foundation in some sports like

football but results will take time to come and one cannot expect them in the short-term

though there is also a push from the top. Media and sports association needs to support

such initiatives and create awareness.

What we need to understand as a growing sports nation, there is a strong need for

collaborative efforts by all stakeholders towards a common goal. In words of Ken

Doherty, “The five S's of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but

the greatest of these is spirit .

Dawn of an Exciting Indian Sports Culture

By S Ramakrishnan, CEO, SportsMechanics

Recent trends have indicated that the Global sports sector is estimated to be worth 480

- 620 billion dollars (KPMG). Concurrently, there has been a significant awareness about

participation in sports in India due to increase in the living standards and health

concerns. This is evident through the increase in participation and medals in other

sports like football, Kabaddi, golf, badminton, tennis and other Olympic sports.

According to the stats, Indian Pro Kabaddi League, which started just a year ago, got a

viewership of over 400 million which was second only to the well established IPL (Indian

Premier League).

Having worked with Cricket first and with 10 other Olympic sports for past many years,

we observed that the team and fan's requirements were met only with basic descriptive

stats. The advent of social media has made the requirements more complex and fans

want to express themselves every minute. Now the decisions are backed with the help

of data. With the surge in social media, our Company plans to fill gaps in the fan

engagement sector thanks to its rich experience working with elite teams. The

exponential growth in Indian Sports Industry has made it necessary for firms to have

quick access to on-field and off-field data to improve efficiency year on year. This is

where our smart products like digital scoring and sports enterprise solutions have

helped improve organizational processes.

We were the first Indian firm to feature in the MIT SLOAN Sports Analytics Conference

held in Boston this year. We gathered from the numerous sports luminaries present that

the sports industry in the US and Europe is more mature than in India. Teams are more

open to data driven decisions and fans are kept deeply immersed every minute of the

match. Big Data research is being performed on individual players and teams to bring

out strengths, weaknesses and patterns during the game play which are being utilized

to gain competitive advantage. It was encouraging to know that these mature sports

are now looking towards emerging nations like India to achieve their next phase of

growth. This provides us with a wonderful opportunity to develop the sports and sports

experience to a whole new level at par with those in the developed nations.

Lack of Physiotherapy Infrastructure hurting Sportspersons in India

By Dr. Ridwana Sanam, Founder & MD, KRV Healthcare & Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a vital form of sports professional patient care but we lack good infrastructure, sports academies and facilities for the professionals. There are good sports professionals and good sports physiotherapist in India but since the awareness is lacking about the benefits of physiotherapy which leads many sportspersons, and their attending doctors, to prioritise surgery as a first option in case of any sports injury or sometimes to excel in the field (Both Physiotherapist and Sportsperson) choose to leave the country and go ahead in abroad because of the better facilities available there. According to me, a proper understanding of the benefits and positives of sports physiotherapy can allow a budding sportsperson to reach any level he or she is capable of. Providing physiotherapy as a first response, rather than surgery, can help a sportsperson become a professional in his or her field whereas a known surgical procedure can, more often than not, hamper that transition from amateur to professional.

We constantly have to try and make the infra advanced so that we are able to retain the talent and contribute in the economy of the country.

Sports is an important profession and If not provided proper care and precautions to a sportsperson, one may end up sitting at home instead of playing at the field. Sports injuries are very common among sportspersons while playing but what shocks us is when proper treatment, rehabilitation and prevention management is not provided.

Since KRV Healthcare and Physiotherapy has been working in sports Physiotherapy since 7 years and have prevented thousands of ligament tear, shoulder dislocations, Golfers elbow etc surgeries.

Care and Prevention is important at the school level rather than when a sportsperson is at the field. Schools should have a Sports Physiotherapist instead of a PT teacher to avoid and cure the sports injuries at the beginning only. Physio at the grass root level is important, regular check-up, prevention management, CSR activities; these are few suggested ways of creating an awareness about Physiotherapy solutions.

Business of sports is still new in India and the Sports Physiotherapy is newer. Australia has outstanding Facilities for Sports Persons. Each school, sports academy, professionals has sports physiotherapist but there is no such initiative in India which results in serious repetitive injuries which threatens their career as a sports person. We at KRV have come up with better solutions for surgery preventions, prevention management workshops, Physiotherapy accessories for sports persons like elbow sport, taping, Back belts, Knee wraps etc. Our endeavours are to provide best solutions to professionals and improve their performance.
