Entrance Exams History of the 11+ in Trafford In previous years children were all entered into one central 11+ exam which was taken in the school hall. The Headteacher had to predict whether a child was Grammar School or High School. If the child did not pass the 11+ the school would appeal on behalf of the pupil. Present system of Entrance Exams Each Grammar School now has their own entrance exam which may follow a different format. This can be very stressful for pupils and their families and we advise that realistic expectations must be taken into consideration. Some children this year sat up to four separate exams. Children in this area are very privileged due to the quality of Grammar School and the local high school (Ashton on Mersey.) The whole system has now been taken out of the control of the feeder primary schools. In fact, the schools are not officially informed of entrance exam results. Any data is from the children themselves. Support available at Woodheys Mrs Daniels and Year Five/Six staff are available for general advice. In response to the Maths skills needed for entrance exams, we have incorporated a ‘thinking skills’ approach across the curriculum. We also offer a free Year Five ‘thinking skills’ club after school in the Spring and Summer terms. After school there is an onsite independent entrance exam tutor available. The office has the contact details of external tutors available in the area. Support from Trafford LA Annually, Trafford offer a ‘drop in’ session at Sale Waterside in the Autumn Term Special circumstances On the day of the entrance exams, parents/carers are entitled to complete a form which is essential if you feel your child’s performance may be affected by special circumstances.
