Additionally, animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won two trophies during the eve- ning. Netflix’s “Roma” won the foreign-language film category. “A Quiet Place,” “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “First Man” and “Roma” are nominated for the Academy Award in sound editing. Last week- end, “Bohemian Rhapsody” won the BAFTA for best sound (which combines sound editing and mixing). During the evening, Michael Mann helped to present the MPSE Film- maker of the Year award to Antoine Fuqua. Accepting the trophy, Fuqua remem- bered the people who were part of the Civil Rights Movement — “many of these people were women” — and he emphasized that he strives to hire a “diverse cast and crew that I believe reflects America.” He saluted the sound profes- sionals, saying “your work is extremely important to me. You make us laugh, cry, feel love ... and you make us think. And we need more critical thinking these days, more than ever.” Supervising sound editor Stephen Hunter Flick — an Oscar winner for “Robocop” and “Speed” — was honored with the Career Achieve- ment Award. The 26-year-old actress — whose father is Mixtec and mother Triqui — plays a live-in domestic worker for a wealthy family in Mexico City in the ’70s in “Roma.” The critically acclaimed semi-autobiographi- cal film by director Alfonso Cuaron reveals her struggles as well as the crucial role she plays in the family, particularly for the children. Goyri quickly apologized for his comments. “It was never my intent to offend anyone. I apologize to Yalitza, who deserves [the Oscar nomination] and much more,” he said in a video posted on Instagram and YouTube. “For me, it is an honor to see a Mexican be nominated for an Oscar.” Aparicio said in an interview earlier this month with the Los Angeles Times that she takes extreme care with the “image” she presents. “I know that everything that I am doing — if I do something wrong, they might think we are all that way. So I have to take good care of that image, our image,” she explained. Aparicio also talked of the pressure and constraints she faced to reach for more in her life. “People would tell me, ‘Why do you study?’” she told the Times. “One, you are a woman. The new release date is April 8, 2020. The film marks Daniel Craig’s return to the storied 007 franchise. Cary Joji Fukunaga, the American filmmaker best known for directing the Emmy- winning first season of HBO’s “True Detective,” will direct the as-yet untitled 25th film in the franchise. Fukunaga, whose feature cred- its include “Sin Nombre,” “Jane Eyre” and “Beasts of No Nation,” also becomes the first American director in the decades-long history of the franchise under MGM. The new film, in which Daniel Craig returns for his fifth (and presumably final) outing as secret agent 007, will begin shooting March 4. Sam Mendes directed the last two films in the franchise: 2012’s “Skyfall,” which grossed US$1.1 billion worldwide, and 2015’s “Spectre,” which reached US$880 million at the box office. MGM, which is producing the film with Eon, will distrib- ute the film domestically with Annapurna Pictures, while Uni- versal handles international ter- ritories.
