06 FIRST WORDS May - June 2013

There is litt le doubt that the audio and lighti ng industry is a very competi ti ve sector. The technology in the industry has grown by leaps

and bounds, thanks to the many visionaries involved in the industry. Many of the pioneers were driven more by passion than business –

their passion and belief that bett er quality can be achieved. Many of their traditi ons have been passed on to the next generati on in the

hope that they will conti nue to be a name to be reckoned with within the industry. This year sees a number of companies celebrati ng their

milestones which they richly deserve. Yamaha celebrates its 125th anniversary this year – of course their legacy started off with musical

instruments but they are force to be reckoned with in the sound reinforcement fi eld as well. As Yamaha’s President Umemura says,

“Yamaha came about because of our passion for sound and music.”

Outline, the Italian audio manufacturer celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. Their founder’s mantra of ‘Delivering the true

audience experience’ has enabled the company to grow from strength to strength. The North American company, Adamson, celebrates its

30th Anniversary this year as well. As many will know Adamson’s conti nued pursuit for sonic excellence has led to a number of

important patents in key loudspeaker technologies being published. And the list of anniversaries goes on...

It is heart-rendering that despite competi ti on, fi nancial crisis plaguing the industry, these and many other stalwarts of the industry have

conti nued to not only survive but lead the industry.

Prolight + Sound this year once again saw a bevy of soluti ons being introduced. This is truly a MUST ATTEND show if you want to be kept

up-to-date with the latest innovati ons. Surprisingly we felt, and many agreed that there were less visitors from Asia this year. Can’t really

point the fi nger why, other than maybe the move to a the later date might have had some eff ect or the fact that the show was also held at the same ti me as NAB and InfoComm China. Nevertheless for those of you who missed it this issue gives you a run-down of some of the new

soluti ons introduced.

Robe returns to the forbidden planet at Tanglin Trust SchoolSingapore: Robe DLX LED Spots have been installed in a lighti ng upgrade at an internati onal school, Tanglin Trust School in Singapore.

Tanglin Trust School has over 2,700 students of which approximately 60% are Briti sh. Every student - across the Infant, Junior and Senior Schools with ages ranging from 3 to 18 years old - uses the space at some stage, with at least two events or producti ons taking place a week.

One of the fi rst performances to uti lise the new DLXs was the Senior School’s recent producti on of the popular musical “Return To The Forbidden Planet” where the lighti ng contributed to the stunning producti on.

The Spots were specifi ed by the school’s theatre manager Vincent Teo for its 400 capacity Berrick Performance Hall.

The Berrick Performance Hall is a multi -purpose space used for a wide range of shows and events including in-house drama and musical producti ons, graduati on and other academic ceremonies, conferences and exhibiti ons, music concerts, dance shows and other live performances.

The eight DLX Spots are the fi rst Robe products purchased by the school and the fi rst ti me Tanglin has owned moving lights.

Vincent explained that one of the reasons Robe was successfully awarded the project – which went to open tender - was due to their energy saving properti es which addressed the school’s environmental commitments.

“Being green is a key objecti ve for Tanglin,” he shared, while highlighti ng the school’s need for a high output and fl exible lighti ng fi xture.

Buying the power-conscious DLXs also meant that Tanglin can add to their lighti ng rig in the future without needing additi onal power installed in the building.

Another infl uencing factor when making Vincent’s choice was the rotati ng and stati c

gobos and the endless patt erns and eff ects.

“I appreciate the fact that you can do shift focus and ti ming transiti ons when changing gobos,” Vincent adds.

“Robe’s superb tungsten emulati on and red fade eff ects are fantasti c – they emulate the qualiti es of a tungsten lamp perfectly!”

Prestigious Chinese clubs reach the Apex of audio qualityChina: Apex Intelli-X2 processors have recently been installed in two of China’s most presti gious nightclubs, with six more installati ons to follow.

Club TNT in Xi’ang is an 850m2 venue which features a diverse array of live music and DJ sets, including pop, rock, electronic and hip-hop.

The audio system was designed and installed by Real Music Acousti c & Lighti ng Technology, who specifi ed four Apex Intelli-X2 48 processors to control a comprehensive Adamson audio system.

“We designed the system with a matrix of loudspeakers, to ensure that all guests are covered by audio from at least two diff erent directi ons wherever they are,” says Real Music managing director Richie Wang.

“This delivered a very uniform sound throughout, maximising the enjoyment and experience for clubbers.” The Intelli-X2 processors were chosen because of their excepti onal quality, but also because their ‘plug and play’ design means that they are very easily incorporated into any system.

“They are excepti onally powerful and fl exible, deliver fantasti c quality sound and are also remarkably straightf orward to install and program,” says Richie.

So impressed were Club TNT’s owners - Nanjing Trendsett er Entertainment Management (NTEM) - with the system that they asked Real Music to install a similar one at their latest project, Club Enzo, an 875m2

venue in Nanjine, where three further Apex Intelli-X2 48s were specifi ed.

“The sound at Club TNT and Club Enzo has really impressed everybody, not least the owners, who are dedicated to building China’s very best nightclubs,” adds Richie.

Nexo STM market presentation in Malaysia

Malaysia: The Nexo STM market presentati on was held at the Selangor Turf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to a crowd of almost 250 guests. Organisers and master dealer of Nexo in Malaysia, Concept Associates (KL) Sdn Bhd teamed up with sister company and main distributor Audio Soluti ons to host the event for friends and clients at the fi rst ever product presentati on event held at the turf club. Industry personnel from around Asia, including India and Vietnam, gathered together at the inti mate venue to enjoy a night of good food, good music and above all, good company.

According to Rico Yong, the system engineer at Audio Soluti ons and one of the main brains behind the event, the celebrati on was a long ti me coming, “From the fi rst ti me I heard the Nexo STM during the launch in Australia, I was amazed that not only can you rig an enti re system with one person but for the fi rst ti me ever, I

could be standing next to a speaker during a show and not have to yell to be heard. It was from that point that I planned to let my fellow customers and friends in Malaysia experience and feel what I did.”

He conti nues about the presentati on, “Tonight, to me, is about letti ng my friends and customers to experience a technology so new that even the design of the cabinet is unique. I'm very thankful the weather worked for us as it was raining heavily the whole of today. We were very nervous and this is the fi rst ti me that many industry kin from all over Asia will get the chance to hear the STM. For the actual demo, we set up sound ranges at 30m, 75m and 100m. The 100m mark was supposed to be the limit, no-one expected the STM to be able to reach more than that and sti ll maintain clear clarity and power. I was surprised when some guests pushed pass the 100m and ironically, the best feedback came from them! I am very proud to be part of this and I believe the STM can handle any challenges that come its way.”

And like Rico said, the weather had threatened disappointment just hours before the event. Many involved were murmuring under their breath, praying for the rain to stop. With just 1 hour ti ll the event was scheduled to start, the rain decided to let the team have their day. Speaking to Sales Manager for Nexo in Asia, Nicolas Kirsch, “Before the event I felt

it was all or nothing. Not just because of the weather but also since it was Concept Associates and Audio Soluti ons fi rst ti me doing something like this. When you go live, anything can happen, the only thing I was sure of were the people and the system but sti ll anything can happen. But even if it was raining, the system would sti ll sound amazing.” It was Nicolas who, when asked to describe the system in 5 words or less, labelled the Nexo STM as “Technically perfect.”

On the att endance to what was initi ally considered a small scale event, Nicolas comments, “The Asian distributors really surprised me. Many came with only a weeks noti ce and they brought with them many of their clients and the result of this is, tonight we have started a wave all over Asia. Nexo is coming back to the touring market in full force and its a fantasti c platf orm for our Asian business as Malaysia is very central and easy to access. I'm as happy as anyone here tonight especially for Shelby and Rico as its their fi rst ti me setti ng up a show like this and fi nally tonight they are blessed with such a huge success.”

Shelby Liew, the Marketi ng Executi ve at Concept Associates, was the other main brain behind the planning, set-up and co-ordinati on of the event. “This

Page 20: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

20 NEWS May - June 2013

event wasn’t merely a launching seminar or a showcase, it served to re-engage and strengthen the relati onship of our company and our valued business partners. It turned out bett er than I expected, and right now, no words can describe how i feel. This is my fi rst event in the industry and I'm so touched by the support especially from Mubari Group of Companies(Mubari G.O.C) who were the fi rst in South East Asia to use the Nexo STM and also sponsored the event along with providing all the logisti cs that made this night possible. They did a great job during the set-up and I am really thankful.”

We also heard from some of the att endees of the night such as Yamaha Music Asia's, Assistant General Manager of PA/CA Marketi ng, Lawrence Tan who said, “ This is my fi rst ti me hearing it and mainly 2 words come to mind,VERY GOOD. I am certainly looking forward to it coming to Singapore where I am based. The sound is diff erent from any line I've heard and its a big system on a large scale and more importantly its a scalable system, which is impressive on its own. It can be used from small to large venues and this is means it had the potenti al to be used in Singapore's sport hubs and stadiums.”

Before expanding into the Asian market, the Nexo system had already built up a reputati on for itself in Europe with shows for Ina Mueller featuring nine M46s and nine B112s along with six S118 subs in a venue with a 6'500 capacity and German Pink Floyd tribute band, Floyd Reloaded.

Siswa Azmi Mubari (aka Ajun Mubari), Director at Mubari G.O.C, spoke about how it was, that Nexo was able to blow out the competi ti on despite the wet conditi ons. He says, “Considering that tonight is such a

humid night, it should be harder to hear most high frequencies of sound as they will be absorbed by the big pools of water parti cles in the air. So if you can sti ll hear the clarity and pitch perfectly, even aft er passing the 100m mark, a system has to be really good. I am really impressed with the Nexo STM. Thank you also to Concept Associates' and Nexo's for organizing this event. This is one of the few events where I can gather with friends in the same industry and have the chance to drink, chit-chat and of course have fun while discussing how Nexo STM can help us all do bett er in our respecti ve businesses.”

With the presentati on being the fi rst ti me the launch would take place in front of many from South East Asia, Val Gilbert, Nexo's Technical System Specialist along with Nicolas were asked to speak about the system before the demo. He spoke of the various uses and how the system can be used to improve the effi ciency of set-up as it is quite straight forward and can be rigged with just one

man or woman. He spoke to us before the event saying, “My stomach is always in knots and I always get the pre-show jitt ers before just because I am so passionate about good products, and the Nexo STM is really a good product.” It was only aft er the presentati on and the demonstrati on that he managed to calm down and enjoy the evening saying, “It went bett er than expected, now I can relax and breathe.” To this we managed to squeeze in a questi on about the evasive OMNI module which is the 8'' downfi ll and only element of the Nexo STM array that has yet to be released. When pressed for its release date, Val quips: “It will be released when it's perfect. Just like the rest of the system.”

Of the enti re evening, the best experience came from those who att ended and were treated to a demonstrati on that you could feel in your bones. It was a great evening for a great product. Andrew Lee, Marketi ng Director, Concept Associates ended off the night with, “everyone has fi nally experienced the true sound of STM”

Robert Bosch launches Electro-Voice ZLX Series in Singapore

Singapore: Just a week aft er its showing at Prolight & Sound, Robert Bosch (SEA) Pte Ltd, held a launch event for the EV ZLX Series on 19th April at the Briti sh Club. The launch saw a healthy turnout with a good mix of industry personnel.

The launch kicked off with a quick overview about the Bosch company, followed up with a quick introducti on of Electro-Voice and Dynacord products as well as the new Bosch PA and conference products. The main event was, of course, the launch of the EV ZLX Series.

With the launch of the new ZLX series, Electro-Voice has extended its range of speaker systems to include two acti ve and two passive models. The ZLX series comprises of the two powered models, ZLX-12P and ZLX-15P, and their passive counterparts, ZLX-12 and ZLX-15. They are equipped in each case with 12” and 15” woofers, respecti vely, a 1.5” ti tanium HF driver and, in the case of the powered models, a 1000 W (peak) Class-D power amplifi er – compromise-free, high-quality components that guarantee clear and powerful performance. The patented “split baffl e” design leads, furthermore, to a clear improvement in the acousti c dispersion. In additi on to a precise sonic image in music applicati ons, the primary advantage of this is enhanced intelligibility of the spoken word.

These features make the ZLX series a highly att racti ve choice for a multi tude of diff erent mobile applicati ons: the speakers are just as suitable for musicians and small groups as for DJs and solo entertainers – whether as a main PA or monitor system (dispersion patt ern 90° x 60°). All members of the ZLX series are notable for their lightness (14.9 kg to 17.3 kg), compact dimensions and robust polypropylene cabinets. The new

arrangement of the handles – above, below and to the side of each cabinet – further assists with setti ng-up and transportati on.

The event concluded with performances from Hariz and Lincoln as well as Charmaine Pelaez, who are EV endorsed arti stes.

Internati onal: APG has announced a strategic partnership with Italian amplifi er manufacturer, Powersoft , that culminated in the launch of a range of APG-branded amplifi ers at ProLight + Sound 2013. The alliance is the fruiti on of a long-standing relati onship and much discussion between the two manufacturers. The fi rst result is that APG is now able to off er customers a range of complete turnkey systems comprising loudspeakers, amplifi ers and

processing, all packaged in standard universal touring racks. However, both manufacturers have stressed that this is only the beginning of a joint development program of technologies for the future.

The fi rst products to be launched as a result of the partnership are the SA20:2 and SA30:2 two-channel, switch-mode class D amplifi ers based on Powersoft ’s fl agship K Series range. Designed for APG’s mid-to-high power and high power systems respecti vely, the 1U SA20:2 and SA30:3 are lighter and more compact than most other comparable amplifi ers in their class. They are also supremely reliable thanks to advanced protecti on circuitry and variable speed forced-air cooling.

Times of India Film Awards prospers with MAC Viper

Internati onal: Associate Designer for the Times of India Film Awards, Robert Sondergaard of Electric Aura, encouraged Lighti ng Designer Atul Sonpal to go with the 1000W Marti n MAC Viper Profi le instead of an originally specifi ed 1500W fi xture, a decision that Atul and Robert proved happy with.

“Given my previous experience with the Vipers on the 2012 Grey Cup, I encouraged him to try out the Vipers instead,” Robert Sondergaard stated. “I was very impressed with their speed and output and I knew he would be as well.”

The Vipers were hung on three set arches as well as the furthest upstage truss where they worked as top colour and gobo wash onto the stage.

“We had the Vipers alternati ng with a [dedicated beam fi xture] and when you zoomed the Viper right down and used the iris to get the same beam size you almost couldn’t tell the diff erence,” Robert said.

Vancouver played host to the inaugural award event, a three-day celebrati on of the music and movies of India. The culminati on was a main award show hosted by Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma which took place at BC Place Stadium. The star-studded aff air featured performances by Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra.

Besides the 42 MAC Viper Profi les, 20 MAC 2000 Wash XBs, 16 MAC 2000 Washes and 36 MAC Auras were also in the rig. Lighti ng vendor for the event was Christi e Lites while Midnite Hour supplied Marti n LC Series LED video panels, which were built into a large upstage wall to back the set.

Adamson celebrates 30th Anniversary with additions to EnergiaAdamson Systems Engineering has become a fi xture on the trade fair fl oors of Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt, Germany. This year marked the thirti eth anniversary for the Canadian company that develops and manufactures a complete line of high performance loudspeaker systems for the professional touring and installati on market. In celebrati on, they hosted a series of parti es and dinners with close friends and customers in the industry who shared in their success.

The Energia e12The popular e15 will now have a partner in the energia line with the release of the all new e12. The e12 was designed as a standalone mid-size box that can also be used as a downfi ll, or side fi ll in a larger e15 arena system. It is a versati le soluti on for large format touring companies and regional rental companies. Off ering high powered

vocal performance for its size, the e12 shares its mid and high components with the e15. Together they create a uniform and seamless ribbon of mid/high energy when the e12 is used in a downfi ll confi gurati on.

Inside the box is Adamson’s new 12” Kevlar driver, the ND12S with advanced cooling and larger xmax, providing uncompromised LF extension, in a 12’ line source system. By uti lizing Adamson’s advanced cone architecture, the ND12S has reduced eddy currents and intermodulati on distorti on by uti lizing shorti ng rings in the motor design. The 12” cone and dustcap are manufactured enti rely out of Kevlar creati ng a highly weather resistant low frequency component for the industry.

The Energia 218The Energia e218 was designed as a

companion sub for the Energia Series e15 and e12 and can be fl own together with an e12 or a stand alone array. The self contained rigging allows for curved or fl at array when it’s fl own but will also travel three up on a cart. Within the manifold design are two of Adamson’s new ND18S drivers with dual spider voice coil stabilizing design. The drivers are coated in silicone for long term suspension memory and shorti ng rings are used to eliminate eddy currents and reduce intermodulati on distorti on.

loudspeaker modelling data for the sound sources as input, FIRmaker computes FIR fi lter setti ngs to deliver high SPL, spectral consistency and smooth sound coverage from the fi rst to the last row of the audience.

FIRmaker's patent-pending algorithms can be employed universally especially when it comes to concert sound applicati ons with large-format portable line arrays. These applicati ons will appreciate the longer throw distances, even coverage, maximized output levels and fast set-up. Digitally steered columns in acousti cally challenging spaces will be boosted in their ability to deliver increased SNR as well as maximum speech intelligibility. However, because it is a soft ware, the AFMG FIRmaker works out of the box. Any DSP or amp platf orm that supports FIR signal processing can be used with the FIRmaker in order to implement audio quality for each seat in the house.

The FIRmaker allows fast and a highly precise generati on of FIR fi lters tailored to a venue, and these can now be loaded directly into Powersoft 's K series of amplifi ers and the DSP4 module for powered loudspeakers. And key partner to AFMG, Lab.gruppen has also integrated all of its PLM Series amplifi ers to interface with FIRmaker.

Inheriti ng technology from the acclaimed GLD and iLive digital mixing systems, Qu-16 features 16 mic/line inputs, 3 stereo inputs, 4 FX engines with dedicated stereo returns, 14 mixes (including LR, 10 aux mixes, plus 2 dedicated FX busses), 12 mix processing channels, patchable AES digital output with a further 2-channel ALT output, dedicated Talkback mic pre input, and 2-Track output.

Qu-16 is equipped with a high resoluti on (800x480) full colour Touchscreen featuring the easy to drive ‘Touch Channel’ access to channel processing, the FX racks and all the setup and system management controls. In keeping with the iLive user interface, Qu-16's SuperStrip provides control knobs for a selected channel’s key processing parameters, such as gain, HPF, parametric EQ, gate threshold, compressor threshold and pan.

Qu-Drive, the mixer’s integrated USB recorder, which works with an external USB drive, can record and playback multi -

track and stereo audio .wav fi les. The USB interface can also be used to store scene and library data for archiving and recall. A&H’s proprietary dSNAKE low latency audio connecti on enables the mixer to connect over a single 120m Cat5 digital snake to a remote audio rack, such as the AR84 or AR2412, and is compati ble with the ME personal mixing system.

Also available is the free iPad app which connects to the mixer via a Wi-Fi router plugged into the Ethernet control port and giving instant wireless control of the mixer’s key parameters and setti ngs.

D.A.S. Audio launches AERO 40A line arrayThe European debut of the company's new system marks the beginning of a new breed of line arrays incorporati ng the latest in waveguide design, power electronics and digital signal processing.

The Aero 40A is a 3-way powered line array system which incorporates connecti vity for remote monitoring and control. The unique confi gurati on of the Aero 40A employs a rear-loaded 12” transducer in a bass-horn confi gurati on for low-end reproducti on. The mid-range is handled by a new 8” transducer developed specifi cally for the Aero 40A. High frequency reproducti on relies on two D.A.S. M-75N compression drivers att ached to a new BPS-2912 waveguide.

Powering the Aero 40A is a package of integrated electronics that includes the digital signal processing engine and a new 2,000W (4,000W peak) amplifi er. The three channel, high effi ciency Class D design is equipped with a switch mode power supply (SMPS) and a comprehensive protecti on package for both the amplifi er as well as the components. The signal treatment incorporates the latest in digital signal processors. Brick wall FIR fi lters have been used to provide perfect alignment between ways achieving excepti onally uniform coverage all the way down to the crossover point. Top-of-the-line AD/DA converters are employed allowing for signifi cant improvements in dynamics, lower distorti on and ultra-low noise levels.

Remote monitoring is provided by way of the DASnetTM monitoring system and soft ware, an audio management applicati on for D.A.S. powered cabinets and processors. The DASnetTM soft ware off ers users instant and intuiti ve control over a range of parameters of a single cabinet or processor or a network of them.

The Aero 40A enclosure is brilliant in design. Constructed using birch plywood and fi nished with the ISO-Flex black paint, it off ers excellent protecti on and durability. Three individual assemblies comprising the high frequency waveguide, the horn device for the 8” mid-range and the carrier for the 12” woofer are made from injecti on molded aluminum and att ached to the front of the cabinet. A two-piece injected aluminum heat sink housing the amplifi er and related electronics is att ached to the rear of the cabinet.

To provide both strength and resistance to corrosion, stainless steel is used for major parts of the new rigging system. A powder-coated heavy duty steel grille protects the components. The capti ve rigging system’s design provides ease-of-use, safe rigging and precise aiming. Using capti ve links and quick-release pins, the spring-loaded links remain positi oned while rigging and prevent ratt ling during operati ons.

Getti ng its offi cial launch at the show was the Impression X4S fi xture, which is the ‘Small’ version of the Impression X4. Featuring the same 15 Watt RGBW LED’s that are used in the Impression X4 - just 7 instead of 19, it has the same homogenous output, the same stunning 7 to 50 degree zoom range and the same pixel patt ern capability, but all in a smaller body which is just 12 inches high and weighs just 12 lbs. It off ers all the things you have always wanted in a small moving LED washlight, but could never get in a single fi xture - and it completes the feature set with fast 16 bit movement, electronic shutt er control and smooth dimming.

Also showcased was the bigger brother, the Impression X4 XL, which features 55 RGBW LEDs (each 15 watt s) coupled with highly effi cient 7° - 50° zoom lens. The opti cs, gives a well defi ned beam,

complete with hard edge in the lower zoom range whilst remaining absolutely homogeneous and soft edged at wider angles. RGBW colour mixing, variable CTO and a fi nely tuned dimming curve are standard in the Impression X4 XL. The Impression X4 XL features individually controllable LEDs allowing a range of diff erent patt erns to be created and displayed on the front lenses, including arrows, numbers, lett ers and much more, either from stock patt erns or through user created patt erns.

D.T.S Lighting astounds with innovation

When the Jack luminaire was fi rst launched, it fascinated the industry. How D.T.S Lighti ng managed to pack 3 machines into one moving head for the fi rst ti me was befuddling. This year's show saw the company take it one step further when they combined the Wash, Beam, Spot and Theatre functi onality into one moving head.

The MAX is a top of the range D.T.S. high-powered compact moving head. MAX’s wide excursion motorized zoom allows any applicati on from long-throw projecti ons to large wall washing. The Beam opening is at 1.5° - 2° ‘Beam’ projecti on; 2° - 37° ‘Spot’ projecti on; 10° - 60° ‘Wash’ projecti on. Add CMY synthesis, linear CTO, animati on wheel, and light output its becomes comparable to the most powerful fi xtures.

We managed to speak to Pierluigi Gasperoni, the Marketi ng Manager for D.T.S Lighti ng and he shares his thoughts on the reason for the MAX's success. “With the MAX you don't need to store 4 machines in your warehouse. You just get one and it does the job of 4. Usually you purchase theatre machines separately but the MAX has one of the best theatre functi ons, its extremely luminous and the luminosity is extremely diff used in every point of the beam, so diff usion is evened out. He adds, “The evoluti on of the company is clearly visible in our new products, all of which are extremely powerful, luminous and versati le. What's more is that one year ago where you needed two people to carry one moving head now the opposite is true. 1 person can carry 2 machines because the MAX weighs less than 50kg, the Raptor at 15kg and the Jack at 14kg. Gone are the days of big and cumbersome machines.”

The Jack fi xture is MAX's litt le brother. The company moved from JACK to MAX by trying to understand what kind of machine would improve a company's business and make their jobs easier. Most rental companies complain about space and purchasing. Buying many fi xtures and having no where to put them but needing them anyway is frustrati ng to say the least. All that is solved with a single machine that does the job of 4 diff erent machines. It's easy to understand but according to Pierluigi, “hard to create”. Seems it paid off though, throughout the 3 days of the fair, the D.T.S stand was completely packed with people asking about the MAX, a centre stage fi xture at the booth.

Pierluigi adds, “The MAX was designed with ergonomics in mind. It was designed by lighti ng designers for lighti ng designers, individuals that would think of the people who would have to deal with the machines on a 50m high truss.” He conti nues, “You can't give them 50kg you must give them 15kg so they can manage their work with ease.”

Besides the JACK and MAX, the RAPTOR also made its presence known. Considered the most powerful beam on the market right now with the fastest pan/ti lt movement, the fastest strobe and the fastest colour and gobo scrolling combined with the fact that its the the size of a football, making it a popular fi xture for local and internati onal rental companies.

MAX comes equipped with the ‘FPR’ system (D.T.S. patent), which allows limitless pan rotati on, in either directi on, never having to reverse moti on.

Martin Audio MLA Mini is the good thing in a small package

Martin Professional lives light in the fast lane

The MLA Mini shares Marti n's MLA technology across a wider range of small-scale portable and installed sound applicati ons. Scalable and versati le, its ultra-compact size understates its output capabiliti es — 12 box array will throw 35 metres (115ft ) and deliver live music in venues with a capacity of up to 1000.

The system can be fl own (up to 16 in an array), ground-stacked or pole mounted. In its simplest confi gurati on, four MLA Minis can be pole-mounted above the MSX with precisely adjustable ti lt angle, and functi on as a plug-and-play system, with the user recalling onboard presets instead of using computer control.

The key to the power of MLA Mini resides in the MSX mini-sub power plant. It complements the main system and houses the amplifi cati on, networking and DSP

necessary to power and control itself and four MLA Mini enclosures. Each MLA Mini enclosure houses 2 x 6.5” (165mm)/2” (50mm) voice coil LF drivers and a verti cal column of 3 x 1.4” (35mm) aluminium dome HF drivers on a 100° horizontal dispersion horn. The 15” (380mm) refl ex loaded MSX can be integrated into fl own arrays or ground-stacked separately.

MSX also contains nine channels of Class D amplifi cati on to provide cellular drive while the on-board DSP interacts with proprietary DISPLAY2.1 intelligent soft ware for accurate array opti misati on. With each individual cell under soft ware control, ‘hard-avoid’ areas can also be programmed-in to reduce sound spill, and verti cal coverage can be fi ne-tuned electronically in-situ without the need to re-rig the array. To eliminate trial and error tuning, arrays and MSX’s can be remotely controlled from a laptop or wireless tablet running VU-NET control soft ware.

Celebrati ng the company's most successful Prolight + Sound experience to date, Director of Sales, Simon Bull comments, “I had considered it impossible that we could have had a bett er show than last year. But if we left the Messe buzzing on that occasion then 2013 has all but left us speechless.”

PR Lighting given the perfect platform

ProAudio Technology presents M20 stage monitor

Prolyte Group releases DOCK Stage

PR Lighti ng had an excellent response to the suite of new products, premièred on the stand of their German distributor, Focon Showtechnic at this year’s show. According to Internati onal Sales Director, Ernie Armas, feedback to all three new products couldn't have been more positi ve.

An eye-catcher of a booth, PR Lighti ng's stand was an inviti ng area with friendly faces and 72 XLED 336’s, designed as sun stripes, dominati ng the back wall. Beams appeared to come out of the heavens, crossing each other like an alien invasion — projected by the innovati ve PR Lighti ng XR-200, XR-300 and PR-5000 Beam. The booth design, by Focon’s Jens Ott enhus, in combinati on with Gunnar Loose’s intelligent programming, brought an enthusiasti c response from the customers.

The Chinese manufacturer used PL+S to launch its new line of LED Studio products (represented by the LED Studio 3300). Aimed at TV studios and special photographic applicati ons, the criteria set for this was soft and uniform light output, high light effi ciency, stable colour temperature and high colour rendering index (with opti onal 3200K and 5600K colour temperature).

Alongside, was the XLED 250, which houses 50W LED that outperforms a standard 250W discharge fi xture. Finally PR Lighti ng showed the XR800 which uses the latest MSR Plati num 35 lamp to deliver an extremely bright light, with a wide zoom range from 7.5°-50°.

Summing up, Pascal says, “PLS 2013 proved to us that PR Lighti ng is heading in the right directi on, and their presentati on at this show will have done much to consolidate their positi on as a high quality brand on the internati onal market."

In the ever-changing landscape of the entertainment industry, even large structures are infl uenced by trends. The traditi onal, saddle-type roof dominates the traditi onal mid-size market, but Prolyte's DOCK Stage concept ti es in with modern requirements – off ering both a fresh look and all the qualiti es you might expect from a Prolyte roof system.

The sleek shark fi n appearance of the stage enhanced by the side canopies, make it an eye-catching feature and is based upon a goal post structure; using standard MPT towers in combinati on with H30V arched trusses. The rotati ng front span of special S52SV truss not only provides the required strength but the rotati ng shaft also enables simple and fast build-up. A front canti lever protects the performing act from weather infl uences.

The DOCK Stage is designed to allow ground level build-up - facilitati ng fast and safe

assembly. The rotati ng front span of special S52SV truss follows the curved design when lift ed to trim height. At the required trim height the front span is locked into positi on and secured with four bolts. The arches are connected at the back of the perimeter truss frame to make the structure stable and strong. The perimeter truss frame can

be exchanged for adapters, if you wish to integrate the DOCK Stage roof with a staging system.

The Stage will be available for delivery from June 2013.

Robe gets to The Pointe

Sennheiser enables easy set-up

Robe had a brand new booth design this year that incorporated a dynamic environment opti mised to illustrate both theatrical as well as rock ‘n’ roll live stage applicati ons. They launched the ROBIN Pointe, a new dynamic beam, spot and wash fi xture whose versati le features include a 5 – 20 degree zoom with full focus control, variable frost, two separate prism eff ects, a rotati ng and a stati c gobo wheel as well as an inbuilt colour wheel.

The lightsource is a 280W Osram discharge lamp making the Pointe a dynamic fi xture to create WOW factors on a large and small scale whilst also embracing Robe’s ‘smaller, lighter, brighter’ and more eco-friendly philosophy. A custom developed homogeniser works with the rotati ng gobos to spread the light evenly and achieve opti mum projecti on quality. A variable frost eff ect instantly transforms the output into that of an effi cient wash light. Robe gets to The Pointe in delivering a robustly built, reliable fi xture weighing just 15.2 kgs.

On top of The Pointe's release, Robe also presented the ROBIN MMX Blade. A 1200-series equivalent lightsource uti lising Robe's popular MMX opti cal technology, complete with a framing shutt er system of four fast ‘blades’ which can be individually positi oned and angled plus or minus 45 degrees, with the whole Blade module capable of plus / minus 90 degree rotati on.

This allows precise shaping and fi ne-spotti ng of specifi c areas on a stage, set or performer. This is a crucial feature for all types of theatre and television producti ons. The Blade system can also produce fast, funky aerial eff ects by being programmed into quick-movement chases and sequences.

An animati on wheel enables the projecti on of dramati c fi re, water, fl ame and other theatrical / environmental eff ects.

58 MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE May - June 2013

beyerdynamic recently established its Asia regional offi ce in Singapore as well as a full offi ce in India. The company has for a long ti me engaged the industry in Asia and has seen signifi cant progress in its sales in the region over the past few years. Entertainment Technology Asia talks to Wolfgang Luckhardt, Managing Director of beyerdynamic GmbH and Michael Kinzel, Director, Sales & Marketi ng for Asia, Pacifi c and India, beyerdynamic Asia Pte Ltd, in an exclusive interview to get their views about Asia and beyerdynamic's future plans.

Establishing a beyerdynamic offi ce in Asia speaks volumes. What insti gated this move?

Michael: When I joined beyerdynamic in 2006, Asia represented roughly 6% of total revenues at the company. Through the steady work from Germany the dedicated team for the Asian region managed to increase this number up to 18% in 2011/2012.

This was a solid basis to do the next step. And the ti ming was just right – shortly aft er we “arrived” with our new offi ces in Bangalore and Singapore, Asia’s share got another signifi cant push ahead.

Asia is a wide and diversifi ed region. Could you give us a brief idea of which countries and what specifi c soluti ons are doing well for beyerdynamic?

Michael: The region Asia/Pacifi c/India covers all countries starti ng from India all the way towards East/South-east Asia down to Australia/New Zealand. Of course, China plays a major role for us – especially aft er the re-structuring of distributi on channels in 2008. Consumer headphones followed by conference systems create the major part of our business there.

Thanks to our partner TEAC we signifi cantly increased market share in Japan over the last couple of years. Their major focus is on Consumer and Pro headphones. Followed by India with our own operati on (headed by Director of Sales India, Naveen Sridhar) where – interesti ngly enough – our high end conference Systems play the main part.

Other strong markets are Singapore, Korea and Australia.

You see – we’re doing well in many countries and enjoy a healthy diversifi cati on within our portf olio which is segmented into Conference, Pro Audio and Consumer.

How much in terms of percentage has Asia contributed to beyerdynamic's revenue over the past three years? What is your expectati on for this year?

Michael: As stated before we’ve managed to increase the percentage close to 20% already over the last 2 years. By end of fi rst quarter 2013 we have achieved 25%! Of course, numbers will vary over the year – but I expect to keep it at least above 20% in 2013.

And this is already quite amazing for a traditi onal German company like beyerdynamic being in the market since 1924. Especially as we mainly speak about

Beyerdynamic poised for next leg

Page 59: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

high end hand made products from the factory in southern Germany making their way to the Asia region.

Your responsibiliti es include the Consumer segment of beyerdynamic's business in Asia. Please can you elaborate when did beyerdynamic get involved in a serious manner in this segment? What are the soluti ons being off ered?

Michael: Being in the headphone business since 1937 beyerdynamic is a legend in the Broadcast fi eld. Already in the 1980s one could fi nd some fi rst “consumer” versions of the beyer headphone classics.

Actually the whole thing only signifi cantly picked up since 2008 when we hired highly skilled staff from the Consumer Electronics fi eld. This brought up new visions and fi nally went into a very healthy crossover from the Broadcast fi eld into a very nice Portf olio of Consumer oriented headphones.

The release of our all new TESLA driver technology in 2009 brought another signifi cant push into the right directi on. But sti ll we’re keeping our heritage as a broadcast legend. Our marketi ng is not shiny bright or supported by big endorsements – it is all based on our huge traditi on of more than 88 years of experience.

What is your view of the consumer segment relati ng to beyerdynamic's business?

Michael: It will defi nitely play an even more signifi cant role in future than presently. Our team in Germany is capable to come up with enough fantasti c new products to keep the ball roling and the market size alone will do its part here.

The Consumer segment has the potenti al to become the single biggest business for beyerdynamic in the future.

beyerdynamic in the earlier years was renowned for its wireless soluti ons. It tapered off but most recently there has been a resurrecti on in this aspect.

Michael: Thanks for this nice lead….Yes, you could say “beyer is back into UHF wireless”!

Aft er several years of being present in this fi eld but not really recognized as a big player we’re now able to serve the market with a German made digital UHF system which is able to cover a frequency range from 470

– 789MHz with just one hardware! All this combined with beyer’s famous changeable capsules, a very nice soft ware, remote functi ons via smartphones and tablet PCs (each receiver carries its own IP address) and a remarkable latency of just 2.1ms……your readers will know what that means.

It is just fantasti c value for money for a soluti on made in Germany – and among others also caters for the very big events.

What happened previously where the company's interest in wireless was distracted?

Michael: Well, as a comparati vely smaller player you someti mes need to decide where to put your resources into. And at the ti me when beyerdynamic lost grip in UHF wireless at the same ti me we invented the fi rst wireless conference systems running on 2.4GHz which was and sti ll is a big success story for the company. We’ve just released the fi ft h generati on QUINTA and it is making its way further.

Nowadays we’re in the positi on to do and support both – UHF and the GHz segment. So you could say we’re also a real wireless company.

What is the view now in relati on to beyerdynamic's wireless soluti ons?

Wolfgang: Our target is to maintain and increase our wireless knowledge and use it to extend our product portf olio step by step. With TG 1000 we have presented a product for the Top level. Now we will collect the feedback and the experience of the users. And of course we want to transform this to products for the semi professional user. Our wireless microphone sound shall also be available for people with a smaller budget.

What are your expectati ons for the wireless soluti ons in Asia?

Wolfgang: Both, Quinta and TG 1000, the high professional products, will help us to create good soluti ons for our customers and to spread our brand name more and more also in the wireless area. We are opti misti c to make signifi cant sales with both products. And then follow the next (logical) steps.

beyerdynamic has incorporated some innovati ve technologies in its soluti ons. Could you give us a brief on some of these innovati ons and their impact for the industry/user.

Wolfgang: Indeed, our fl agship wireless system, TG 1000, is full of innovati ve features. The most obvious user advantage certainly is the huge bandwidth of 319 Mhz. This gives rental companies and all other users utmost fl exibility, and it makes TG 1000 a secure long-term investment in ti mes of permanent frequency re-arrangements and Digital Dividends. Another major advantage of TG 1000 is the latency of only 2.1ms, which is a new benchmark of all digital wireless microphones. But we also paid a lot of att enti on to user-friendliness. A receiver with a large OLED display and all butt ons being illuminated, a super-intuiti ve navigati on menu, and our proprietary Chameleon soft ware, which adapts to all operati ng systems and runs with all kinds of portable devices. Most of all however, TG 1000 delivers the high-end sound, which you can expect from a premium beyerdynamic microphone. First of all, there is a choice of changeable dynamic, condenser and ribbon capsules from our TG series. All of them are hand-made in Germany, and they all have the legendary "beyer sound". On the receiver-side, TG 1000 has some of the fi nest 24bit/96kHz converters available, and most importantly, we developed our own TriplePlay audio codec, which combines high-end audiophile performance with high error-resilience. All of these features make TG 1000 a wireless system which truly stands out.

Finally what are your future plans for beyerdynamic Asia in terms of staff strength, services to be provided, etc?

Wolfgang: We go for the extension of our actual development. With Singapore as the centre we will build up more and more services within the next months, for example, technical support for partners and customers. And our clear focus is to strengthen all Business units. So, the group of beyerdynamic people in Asia will grow.

And in India we will intensify the communicati on and the support with partners and customers, too. To provide big and smaller dealers with installati on products we will open up our warehouse and will do shipments from India to India in the second quarter this year. A very important fi rst step to strengthen our presence in this att racti ve country.

60 THE INTERVIEW May - June 2013

Perfectus-Dorier’s Hans Friis on the AV Alliance By Rosalind Tan

The success of any event depends largely on the standard of the audio-visual media selected and the way it’s put to use. With 58 members from 37 countries across 78 citi es, AV Alliance has established itself as the brainchild behind the assembly of “best-of-breed” specialists within the AV industry, consisti ng of leading event, equipment and rental companies all over the world. To paint a clearer picture, E-Tech Asia spoke with Hans Henrik Friis, Deputy Group Managing Director of Perfectus-Dorier, and Board Member of the AV Alliance on his involvement in the AV Alliance.

“We are driven by a mutual ambiti on to provide the very best quality at competi ti ve rates.”

– Hans Friis

First, tell us how Dorier became Perfectus-Dorier?

Hans: Dorier Asia began small, as a technical services company established in Singapore in 2010 by Dorier S.A., Switzerland.

Given credence to how Asia is becoming the future of the events industry, we looked for a partner which we found in Perfectus, a Singapore-based AV technical services company with offi ces through out the region.

Dorier has since been able to leverage the well-established Perfectus brand, which is already in line with our vision of adhering to high quality standards.

As a group, we cater to a vast range of technical requirements including lighti ng, staging and set design, audio visual, camera and video producti on, projecti on, large screen systems, microphone management and audience response systems, content capture and disseminati on, sound and professional audio systems, and simultaneous interpretati on systems.

Tell us more about AV Alliance, what does the alliance seek to achieve?

Hans: The AV Alliance has existed for close to three years. We formally created it as an associati on about two and a half years ago. It is a grouping of like-minded companies

sharing their experti se, manpower and experience in 78 citi es around the world. The Alliance strives to deliver the best quality service at competi ti ve prices. We handle approximately 59,000 projects a year.

In Asia and the Middle East alone, we have six member companies that cover Beijing, Bangkok, Singapore, Mumbai, Dubai, and Amman.

IFFA event in Bangkok, 2010

Page 61: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

Angor Wat: Cambodia Project, courtesy of One Forty Seven Communicati ons.

The alliance provides the reliability and confi dence at an aff ordable price among members and their clients. As such, we have very strict criteria for becoming members. The associati on vets each company before they become a member.

For example, one of our clients from here, in Singapore or in China, plans to go to Europe or to America, we just have to contact our friends who are part of our network. Then I know they are in good hands. They are part of our network, they adhere to the same high standards, the same criteria that we do. We are very tough on each other in terms of quality.

Can you share with us the virtues of this alliance?

Hans: It’s a very good grouping. We have seen a tremendous amount of networking and support within the group from when we started it. Dorier was one of the fi rst members to join when Simon Ackermann (Chairman and Founder of the Associati on) came over to have a look at Dorier.

We do work for many other American and European companies in and outside the Alliance. For instance, many Western companies that are not familiar with Asia, or conducti ng business in Asia; so they call us up, ask for support in terms of manpower and equipment. In the past, they might ship equipment, now they just have to make the call and we will give them the full package of manpower and equipment. We are all about how best to service our clients.

So what we’re doing, we’re looking at the environment and the sustainability because to ship equipment and fl y staff half way around the world does not make any sense, it is not sustainable and it is all available locally anyway. At the end of the day, we are not only saving money for the client, we are also looking aft er the environment and being fi nancially prudent. It’s a win-win situati on for everybody. There’s stability while remaining cost eff ecti ve.

Could you elaborate more about the membership criteria?

Hans: To be a member, the company has to be able to provide or supply rigging, light, sound or and video; have qualifi ed manpower; be fi nancially stable: positi ve rati ngs; have experience, training and experti se. Aft er which, they are carefully vett ed by a board member to see if they can qualify for membership.

How has Perfectus-Dorier benefi tt ed from the alliance?

Hans: Dorier has three member offi ces in Asia – Singapore, Bangkok and Beijing. We have seen a tremendous amount of networking and support from members, and they know that when they need an AV company in Asia, they can come to us.

In fact, at the annual general meeti ng we just had, there is quite a clear indicati on by the other members that it is an advantage to be a member of the alliance because they now know that if there is a need for an AV company in South-east Asia, they can come to us. If it is in India, they have Showbiz, who is a member in India.

“It has become a blue stamp in terms of setti ng standards. We have very

high standards for our members and there’s a much higher level of

trust and support among members.”

If we have a project in Europe, we fl y in one or two project managers and we can get the equipment and supporti ng manpower in Europe. What we’re doing is that we’re actually serving our client in a much bett er fashion, with local knowledge and equipment on the ground, so that there is no need for us to ship it over. Saving on tremendous cost.

What are some projects that you’ve worked on through the alliance?

Hans: We have a good number of references, where we have done projects and events with partners in the alliance and for some of their clients such as Sati s&Fy from Germany; LMG in the US, Mediatec Soluti ons in Sweden, just to name a few.

Further thoughts on the alliance?

Hans: To a large extent, it’s going to be the future. If you make the analogy with the airline industry, in about 5 or 7 years, there might only be fi ve airlines in the world. We’re going in that directi on. I’m not saying that will be the same for our industry, since we are a very small industry but I think a strategic alliance is going to be the way forward. To help each other, we don’t necessarily need to be one big company that handle everything ourselves.

Age of InfotainmentIndia is currently living in two ages simultaneously: Age of Informati on and Age of Entertainment. While the informati on explosion rendered the ‘Gen-Next’ of the billion-plus populati on to explore the world deeper and deeper, the Age of Entertainment has been adding new nerve and verve for a variety of entertainment on a consistent basis.

The growth enthusiasm is so much that a cumulati ve account of a few surveys a few years ago pegged the Indian Entertainment (including Media) industry at roughly USD25 billion by 2013. While the fi gure was a holisti c esti mate that included diverse segments of media like fi lmed entertainment, television, radio and print media, the segment of Live Entertainment alone accounted for nearly USD4.5 billion. A matt er of sheer irony though, is the size of organized events

industry which was pegged to touch or cross USD 875 million by 2013-14.

“It’s prett y obvious,” says an industry observer. “The industry is replete with at least a few hundred, if not a thousand small players who are practi cally impossible to account for,” he says and adds, “they do, however, account for a large part of the business, making it diffi cult for a precise esti mati on.”

How big is the industry!According to the observer, even those in the organized sector do not oft en provide genuine fi gures for the simple fact that they don’t have one. This is borne by the fact that diff erent people gave highly varying fi gures about their esti mati on on the size of the rental and staging industry in the country. It varied from as high as a few hundred million USD to as low as 30 million USD.

“The rental business is growing at a rapid pace in India,” says Santana Davis of J Davis Pro-Sound and Lighti ng. “With the increase in the number of festi vals, concerts, sporti ng and corporate events – and not to forget the boom in the television industry where massive staging and set designs, major lighti ng inventory with loads of LED and trusses are used – it’s phenomenal.” According to him, Bollywood –India’s mainstay of fi lmed entertainment – is also contributi ng in a major way along with the televised reality shows.

“I cannot esti mate the revenues but (I'm sure) it is a huge business at the moment,” Santana says.

A largely conservati ve esti mate about the size of the industry is from Sanjay Mudartha, Director of Bangalore-based rental and staging major Acousti c Control. According to him, the size of the industry ranges between

India’s Rental and Staging Industry: Manifold growth with many challengesBy Ram Bhavanashi

India’s Rental and Staging industry is going places; it is growing unbounded, literally! So much so, that it is considered diffi cult to measure the dimensions of its scale. While the impressive growth rate across most verti cals of the industry is cognizable, the industry is also faced with challenges galore. Here is an att empt by ETA to present a scenario out of what is arguably one of the most complex mixes of diverse industry segments.

Page 63: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

USD 75 million to USD 100 million. This extremely conservati ve view is echoed by Hyderabad-based rental, staging and events enterprise Highbrow Producti ons Services Pvt. Ltd. Managing Director Sreecharan Atluri.

However, according to yet another survey, the industry is supposed to size up to 300 million USD, with a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20 per cent. On the other hand, the Event Management industry that largely overlaps with the rental and staging industry is esti mated to touch or cross 860 million USD in 2013-14. The variable esti mates are due to the fact that the Live Entertainment is vastly segmented, and there is hardly a player that is involved across all the verti cals of the segments. While this makes the esti mati on of the market size fairly complex, and oft en erroneous, the tendency of the players not to be truthful with facts and fi gures of their trade renders the surveys arguably ambiguous.

Factoring Growth! The ambiguity of esti mates does not, however, discount the impressive growth that’s happening all around, vouches the observer. Indicati ng at the phenomenal increase in the number of events bringing

in Live Entertainment of rental and staging. From highly organized Award Ceremonies and sporti ng celebrati ons, to small ti me community reveling occasions like festi vals and weddings, the rental and staging industry expresses itself everywhere.

“Out of the many expressive ways, the biggest growth we have seen is in the festi vals, TV-based Events, and Foreign Concerts,” says Santana Davis. “While sporti ng events have gained a lot of momentum Corporates are limping back to normalcy aft er the recession period even though budgets are sti ll a concern.”

According to him, every year, the company invests around 10 million to 15 million USD depending on the dynamics of the economy. It posted revenues close to 20 million USD in 2012, and hopes to bett er the fi gure this year.

Most enterprises in the organized sector make anywhere between one million to fi ve million USD annually while the mid-range enterprises post anywhere between 5 to 15 million USD revenues every year. The high-end enterprises, which are arguably very few, are esti mated to make revenues between 15 million and 20 million USD. This is supported by revenues which may be many fold from the un-organised sectors.

The year 2012 is said to have seen impressive growth in corporate events, concerts, community festi vals, and televised events. Thanks to the emergence of big-ti me sporti ng events like Indian Premier League (IPL) and Formula One, the stakes of rental and staging industry in the country are up on the rise. That the 60-day multi -venue IPL sporti ng spectacle involves a signifi cant usage of rental and staging, it has more or less become a regular revenue stake for the industry.

A unique factor in the Indian Live Entertainment industry, is that while the concerts and install sound music festi vals pale in comparison with those in the West or advanced East, the translati on of religious and community celebrati ons into rental and staging business has been on the rise at a regular pace.

“Though on a very small note, every occasion is an R&S setti ng today,” says another observer. “A college annual day functi on, a Navratri festi vity, or a New Year celebrati on - every instance is a case of R&S business ,” says the observer. “Add to this, the product launches and fashion shows which are gradually turning a regular fare.”This consistently growing demand for translati ng every single community get-together into a reveling with sound and light is, therefore, playing a big growth factor for most players. For most players, it is looking att racti vely rosy for the current year. “We expect a growth of at least 10 per cent to 18 per cent,” says a confi dent Sanjay, while Sreecharan forecasts that, “it would see around 10 per cent growth.”

A measured outlook from J Davis Pro-Sound chief puts it a bit too early to forecast anything though Davis does see good growth prospects for the year, and so does Director of Sound.com Pvt. Ltd., Warren D’Souza. Both of them see “bett er business for the year” than what they had in 2012.

Challenges GaloreThe enthusiasm though is not free of challenges. “There are challenges galore.” Lack of skilled work force, price competi ti on, logisti cs and more!

“The greatest challenges we face are poor producti on and logisti cs management,” says Warren. According to the Mumbai-based rental and staging major, the industry also is faced with a major challenge of customers’ tendency of closing very large events at a very late stage due to which there wouldn’t be enough ti me to plan the event. This aff ects the fi nal result. “Very few companies manage their producti on well and some have now began to outsource their work to a producti on management company,” explains Warren. “This is surely welcome,” he says, adding, “so the situati on from the producti on side is improving with the arrival of dedicated Producti on Houses.”

Says Santana Davis: “It’s both lack of skilled work force as well as the price war with competi ng players. Adding to that is, of course, the high expenses of running the business like the warehousing.” According to him, costs of warehousing are parti cularly high in metro citi es. Rise in shipment costs due to frequent hikes in fuel prices. More, while high pay package expectati ons of (under-)skilled workforce has been a drain on the revenues of most companies, delayed payments from customers has been compounding the woes.

“Lack of skilled manpower has always been a potenti al challenge for many years now,” says Sanjay Mudartha. This had been

crippling the management of business to a large extent. Shorn of human talent, enterprises have oft en been falling short of customers’ expectati ons which in turn has become a handicap in price bargain. More, this situati on has also been leading to an unwritt en price competi ti on amongst the players. In fact, “the price competi ti on from competi ng players has also become potenti al challenge impacti ng businesses,” explains Sreecharan Atluri.

So, Where’s the Industry going?“It’s certainly going places,” affi rm most players, and the observers, “but along with its challenges as well.” According to the Acousti c Control chief, while the growth

is happening, it is being fueled by cheap equipment (coming from China). This does impact the producti on quality, he admits, but feels it will improve in the coming years as there is a growing secti on of customers who are well informed about the quality and they are demanding. “The producti on levels are already on the rise,” Sanjay says, “it’s only a matt er of few years wherein the magnitude and quality of producti on will equal that of the West.”

Warren sti ll wants to warn: “It lacks safety standards to begin with.” He, however, adds that the industry is growing, nevertheless.

“Some of the large and reputed rental companies are running the businesses professionally by investi ng in quality and standard equipment; following safety standards; and employing skilled manpower,” vouches Santana Davis. “That’s an organized way of operati ng the business.” He, however, hastens to add that there is sti ll a lot the SME (small and medium enterprises) are supposed to do, to be able to compete with professionalism.

“The rental market of sound, lights, LEDs and trussing is defi nitely moving forward in the right directi on,” Davis vouches again. However, the staging industry is yet to catch up on the technology and quality of install competence, he feels. “This should happen in few years to come.”

“The growth is surely happening, and there is enough energy in it- both rental and staging,” assures the Highbrow chief. “We run our business as professionally as it ought to be.”

The key aspect here, according to observers, is the absence of a ‘standards’ parameter. “For the Audio-Visual and Systems Integrati on side of the industry, there is an apex insti tuti on like InfoComm Internati onal and its associated programmes of certi fi cati on, technology standards etc,.” points out an observer, “for Live Entertainment, there’s practi cally nothing.”

Page 65: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

The key aspect here, according to observers, is the absence of a ‘standards’ parameter. “For the Audio-Visual and Systems Integrati on side of the industry, there is an apex insti tuti on like InfoComm Internati onal and its associated programmes of certi fi cati on, technology standards etc,.” points out an observer, “for Live Entertainment, there’s practi cally nothing.” While some promoters are certainly CTS (certi fi ed technology specialist)-tagged, most others are mere engineers, who have just grown up in the fi eld having been induced by someone, if not, started their own by passion. There’s no regulatory body to monitor this; anybody and everybody with passion and wherewithal can start a business without requiring the technical essenti als- that’s where the issues of professionalism, safety and quality standards arise from.

A visibly unprofessional face of this tendency is a high degree of skepti cism, fear of competi ti on, and disregard to what is noti onally considered business ethics.

“There is something to do with the equipment import regulati ons as well,” points out another industry expert. “That these regulati ons are really tough, people tend to fi nd other ways to do away with them, and it oft en refl ects in troubling situati ons.”

So, What’s the way forward? It’s both simple and tough task too. “Investment in quality products; training initi ati ves to develop skill sets and human

talents; helping the industry get more and more organized to ensure there is a fair competi ti on in the market; and of course, a proacti ve and progressive measures to increase the budgets,” lists up Davis.

“Good equipment requires good manpower and this will not happen unti l the budgets increase,” declares Sanjay Mudartha. “If producti on budgets increase, rental companies will defi nitely step up to the plate and deliver,” he affi rms, “it’s just a matt er of ti me as we are aware of current trends; it’s a matt er of sti cking to high quality producti on and pushing the boundaries when it comes to technology so that the industry is forced to follow suit.”

“It needs an initi ati ve that sets standards with quality equipment,” opines the Highbrow chief. But who should initi ate the process – in the given scenario – can be anybody’s guess. “People involved with the business should focus on fi nal producti on quality,” sums up Warren D’Souza. “That itself would make the stakeholders strive for quality.”

Positi ves• Growing number of events• Growing demand• Adequate awareness

Negati ves• Unprofessionalism• Skepti cism• Lack of skilled workforce• Fear of competi ti on• Budgetary constraints• Cheap/sub-standard equipment

The way forward!• Training initi ati ves to develop skill

KV2 Audio heads up ASEAN Heads of State Summit

Indi

a

In a high profi le event at the Rashtrapati Bhawan which is Hindi for President's House, 240 musicians and dancers

performed in a one hour extravaganza in front of the President and Prime Minister of India as well as the ASEAN Heads of State.

Local rental producti on company Dhawan Electricals supplied a single KV2 Audio ES system which has become renown for its unique and versati le capabiliti es. A truly scalable system, it is compact and modular with all the electronics and amplifi cati on housed in separate, portable units - the EPAK2500 and 2500R.

The EPAK2500/R control unit incorporates four task specifi c amplifi ers. Electronic crossover fi lters, ti me alignment, equalizati on, system protecti on, and level controls are all done on-board uti lizing industry leading 20MHz digital conversion where required. The ES1.0 Mid/High speaker and the EPAK2500/R make up the core of the system. Each ES1.0 requires an EPAK2500/R to power it and the three way cabinet includes a12'' horn loaded mid bass driver, 6'' horn loaded mid speaker, and 1.75'' Titanium compression driver.

Users can rotate the ES 1.0 horn assembly in order to run the system in a verti cal or horizontal confi gurati on, and couple two

ES1.0 cabinets together horizontally to create a very powerful, long throw soluti on.As well as driving the three way ES 1.0 cabinet, a fourth amplifi er channel in the EPAK2500/R control unit was dedicated to powering a choice of ES series subwoofers. Director of Dhawan Electricals, Yogesh Dhawan, commented “The KV2 ES system proved it's worth as a compact, easy to use, excellent performer with awesome sound quality.”

The performance took place in the Ashoka Hall which in terms of depth, is not very big, however, the crew hooked up most of the instruments, “to give the audience a feel that almost everything is acousti c” as Yogesh puts it. “Thanks to the engineering at KV2 and the 20MHz processing, even at low amplifi cati on every detail is crystal clear, thereby giving the audience an eff ect of the sound they hear as almost acousti c.”

Teamwork who were the producers and designers of the show, have also managed numerous internati onal festi vals including the Jaipur Literature Festi val, Bonjour India Festi val and Indian Summer Festi val, among many others. They were so impressed with the sound that they have now sti pulated that only KV2 speakers are to be used for all their projects.

KV2 Audio’s distributors in India, Cinetekk and AG Acousti cs supplied the ES System to Dhawan Electricals. Siddharth Sood from AG Acousti cs stated, “Dhawan Electricals are extremely happy with the system. They are adding a second KV2 ES System this month.”

Yogesh Dhawan concludes with, “I would like to thank KV2 for the excellent product they have created and I would like to conti nue spreading the word to who ever I meet.”

The ninth editi on of the Jakarta Internati onal Java Jazz Festi val, held at the Jakarta Internati onal Expo in

March, is an annual music event organised since 2005. It has now become the largest jazz music event in Asia that pays tribute to the legends that once graced the world of jazz music locally and internati onally. Sennheiser Asia partnered with the festi val's organisers, PT Java Festi val Producti on, as an audio equipment sponsor for its third consecuti ve year.

Over 130 local and internati onal well-known musicians gathered to perform on 13 diff erent stages for the three-day event, including Grammy-winning musicians, singers, songwriters, and producers. Key performances featured English singers and songwriters;Joss Stone, Lisa Stansfi eld, and Craig David. The line-up of popular Indonesian musicians also included jazz vocalist and Sennheiser SKM 5200-II user, Andien.

The Sennheiser Asia team, together with the support of its local distributors (PT Galva Technovision, PT Indika Siar Sarana, PT Tri Tunggal Abadi, and PT Suara Visual Indonesia), were on-site to provide equipment and technical support for the festi val’s main stages, press conference, gala dinner, as well as the largely-celebrated festi val pre-event stage, known as “Java Jazz on the Move” (JJOTM) at the Pendopo Lounge in Hotel Borobudur.

During the festi val’s offi cial press conference in February, Sennheiser Asia took the opportunity to announce the endorsement of its fi rst Indonesian singer, Raisa Andriana while supplying the event with four channels of evoluti on wireless vocal microphones and various evoluti on 900 series wired instrument microphones were supplied for live arti ste performances, while eight MD 46 reporter microphones were also used as panel microphones for the speaking panel. Three cabinets of L-Acousti cs KARA loudspeakers

and two SB18 subwoofers were fl oor-stacked per side as front-of-house speakers.

The festi val also hosted a by-invite only gala dinner event at Hotel Borobudur, which Sennheiser supported as part of the partnership agreement. Eight channels of 2000 Series professional wireless microphones and numerous evoluti on 900 series wired instrument microphones were setup to cater for live stage performances during the dinner. Three cabinets of L-Acousti cs KARA loudspeakers and two SB18 subwoofers were paired per side as front-of-house speakers with two additi onal KARA

with Java Jazzcabinets on stage for front fi ll audio. One pair of K-array KR200 Redline speakers was also deployed as out fi ll, in order to extend coverage to the extreme left and right seati ng areas of the ballroom.

At the Pendopo Lounge, the JJOTM stage was fi tt ed with Sennheiser microphones. Four channels of evoluti on wireless 500 G3 series, assorted evoluti on 900 series wired instrument microphones, as well as MK 4 condenser microphones (mounted on Rycote Lyre supensions) for drums, saw many spontaneous jazz performances by the star-studded festi val cast in a casual and inviti ng setti ng.

In the main festi val grounds, eight channels of Sennheiser evoluti on wireless 300 IEM G3 systems circulated amongst eight internati onal performing stages involving celebrated arti stes with the likes of Craig David and Spyro Gyra. President of Sennheiser Asia, Ng Chee Soon commented, "We are thrilled to be working with the festi val organisers once again. This is an excellent platf orm for us to conti nue to showcase the Sennheiser brand as a leading audio expert in Indonesia that is synonymous with such a highly-acclaimed music festi val. ”

On top of the audio equipment support, a 200 square-metre brand booth at the festi val

grounds was constructed with a dedicated 50 square-metre consumer experience zone, where the new MOMENTUM Black headphones were unveiled to the public for the fi rst ti me in Indonesia. Festi val att endees and performers alike also received numerous photo printouts at Sennheiser’s instant photo booth. The Sennheiser booth also featured a live performance area where festi val goers were entertained by daily stage performances by local jazz bands, Lani & The

Bees and the Acadian Blues Band. The stage was equipped with four channels of evoluti on wireless vocal microphones, assorted evoluti on 900 series wired instrument microphones, as well as L-Acousti cs SB18 subwoofer and 115HiQ acti ve stage monitor speakers on each side as a front-of-house system together with one pair of K-array KR200 Redline speakers for stage side fi ll.

Clay Paky Sharpys @ The Logie AwardsAU

STRA

LIA

The 55th TV Week Logie Awards were held at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne, Australia and broadcast

live on the Nine Network.

The annual celebrati on's lighti ng had been designed and operated by Rohan Thornton for several years previously. However, he left his role as Lighti ng Director at the Nine Network last year to explore freelancing. Fortunately, Nine realised they needed his talent and experti se and managed to employ him on a contract basis.

On request from Rohan, Show Technology, Clay Paky's Australian distributor, rushed in the new Clay Paky Sharpy Wash 330 fi xtures. The Sharpy Wash is equipped with a zoom that ranges from 6° to 50°, CMY colour mixing, a wheel with special colours, a rotati ng beam shaper, a frost fi lter, a motorized top hat and even more. Even with its multi tude of features, the Sharpy Wash manages to weigh in at just nineteen kilos and is as small and compact as its brother, the Sharpy Beam.

Rohan fi rst saw the Sharpy Wash at the LDI show last October and he rated the fi xtures the standout products of the show.

"I thought they were brilliant!" he remarked. "The speed, quality of beam, quality of colour and all the features were amazing. They have great intensity, power effi ciency, and of course Clay Paky colours are always fantasti c. The Sharpy Wash is simply a really good, small light with a lot of tricks. It's really

versati le due to its beam range and beam shaping - a true multi functi onal light."

At the award show, Rohan positi oned the Sharpy Washes above the host set so they could wash the stage. It was during the musical acts that they, along with the Clay

- Rohan Thornton, Lighti ng Director

Page 79: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

Paky Alpha Beam 700's, were the essence of the moving light rig.

"The Sharpy Washes performed great, we had no failures and the spares are sti ll covered in dust," commented Rohan. "We found some really cool tricks to do with them such as beam chases and the consistency across the rig was phenomenal. The CTO was really nice on them too."

As well as the thirty-six Sharpy Washes the rig featured 80 x Sharpy Beams, 60 x Alpha Beam 700's, Marti n TW1's, Marti n MAC Auras, MAC301's and MAC101's as well as 220 Pro Shop LED MulitPARs, GLP Impression X4's and Marti n Fusion Bars.

Unusually, Rohan decided to use Clay Paky 1500 and 700 Alpha Profi les as key lights; a somewhat bold experiment that fortunately for everyone involved, proved to be a risk worth taking.

Explaining his decision, Rohan says,"Traditi onally I would key light using a tungsten based profi le or something like that but the problem is that graphics are fundamentally created at daylight level so we never got really good clarity on shows at this venue.” "I decided to use the 1500 and 700 Alpha Spots but most arc lights are very diffi cult to colour correct. It was then that I discovered I could get Permacolor fi lters supplied and this made me think to replace some of the colour correcti ons but, of course,

modern moving lights have fi xed wheels for their fi xed colours. Instead, we worked out that we could get some cut and made to go in the gobo slots. We ended up using the variable CTO and Permacolor fi lters to come up with a colour temperature of about 5000 degrees Kelvin. So basically, all my lectern lights and back lights were either 700's or 1500's and that allowed us to do things like have a ti ght lectern or if there were a lot of people at the lectern we could expand the shutt ers out without changing the intensity. It

worked really well and we certainly got some clarity out of the graphics that we've never had before."

The main lighti ng suppliers for The Logies were Resoluti on X and PRG with Resoluti on X sub-hiring the Sharpy Washes from Chameleon Touring Systems. Lighti ng Lab and Clearlight also supplied a small amount of gear.

Ten Years Aft er Audio ensures clarity with HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown VRack amplifi cati on systems

Rajamangala Nati onal Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand drew a huge turnout of fans for Coca-Cola

Thailand’s “Real Voice, Real Talent” concert. Ten Years Aft er Audio (TYAA), one of the leading audio rental fi rms in Thailand, deployed thier new HARMAN JBL VTX line array system and Crown I-Tech HD amplifi ers for the event, which featured performances from all 59 contenders of The Voice Thailand television series.

The concert featured loudspeakers and amplifi ers on all four sides of a large, square stage set up in the middle of the stadium. The main PA system featured 36 units of JBL VTX V25 full-size line array elements, fl own in left -right arrays, at the front of house and opposite sides of the stage.

These were supplemented with a total of 32 units of VTX S28 18" sub-woofers,deployed on the ground in four cardioid-confi gured arrays of eight each that feature Diff erenti al Drive technology with two voice coils, two neodymium magnets and high peak-to peak excursion capabiliti es that deliver extended very low frequency performance.

The other two sides of the stage featured left -right arrays of six JBL VERTEC VT4889 full size line array elements each, for a total of 24 VT4889 elements. 24 VERTEC VT4880 sub-woofers were on these two sides of the stage ranging a frequency between 26 Hz - 160 Hz (-10dB). Powering the loudspeakers were 32 x Crown VRack 12000HD amplifi cati on systems. Uti lizing the built-in signal

distributi on and on-board DSP resources of the VRack 12000HD’s, TYAA was able to drive the enti re system with JBL V5 tunings, maximizing the performance and linearity of the VERTEC and VTX loudspeakers.

Sixteen JBL STX815 loudspeakers were pole-mounted for supplementary fi ll, with additi onal STX815 loudspeakers for stage monitors, powered by eight Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifi ers. Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi1 consoles were each used at the FOH and monitor positi ons, with system design and management handled by JBL HiQnet Performance Manager.

“We collaborated on the system design with Performance Manager, virtually building the

Page 81: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

system together within the framework of the soft ware, and it was an incredibly smooth process,” said Eric Friedlander, Business Developer, Tour Sound, Crown Audio (who provided on-site support for the event). “TYAA worked with [Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL] Paul Bauman to opti mize the PA virtually in JBL Line Array Calculator 2, so when setti ng up the system, we simply had to load the Performance Manager fi le into the amps and it made for a phenomenal starti ng point.”

“In additi on, Performance Manager was key in setti ng up the cardioid sub-woofer confi gurati ons on-site,” Friedlander added. “Setti ng up the proper DSP with one click on a speaker in Performance Manager enabled

TYAA to simply deploy the subs knowing the opti mal setti ngs were already in place.”

This was the fi rst event at which TYAA used its full VTX system which uti lises JBL's exclusive dual voice coil, dual magneti c gap Diff erenti al Drive technology, dramati cally reducing driver weight while greatly enhancing all criti cal performance parameters: frequency response, power output and distorti on. The system was purchased through HARMAN’s Thailand distributor, Mahajak Development Co., Ltd.

“Unquesti onably, it is a great honour for us to have this opportunity to employ world-class audio systems for the best performance for

with HARMAN

our customers,” said Chavalit Mahaviriyakul of TYAA. “We could not be more confi dent in HARMAN and Mahajak, as well as our decision to upgrade to the JBL VTX series.”

Showtec Communicati ons provides L’Acousti cs, D.T.S Lighti ng and Christi e soluti ons for the ulti mate festi val experience

When the annual Timbre Rock and Roots festi val rolled around this year in Singapore, organizer

Timbre Group Pte Ltd called upon the experti se of one of the largest rental and staging companies in the country, Showtec Communicati ons Pte Ltd(Showtec), for the

4th ti me in a row. Even though the honour was bestowed upon the company ever since the festi val's inaugurati on, the 2013 editi on would be more demanding as it set out to be bigger and bett er than ever before.

Leading the producti on team from Timbre Rock & Roots Pte Ltd, producti on manager ,Sofi an Abdul Manan and assistant producti on manager Luthfi Hamzah decided to house the festi val in Singapore's Fort Canning Green (esti mated to be about 11,500 sqm). This was a testament to just how much the festi val has grown in not just popularity, but quality as well. A total of 11,500 fans showed up, clamouring for sets by legendary names – in parti cular, American singer-songwriter Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant and country/blues stalwart Bonnie Raitt , names who have helped shape various music genres over the years.

To do justi ce to the amazing music, Showtec's Project Designer, Kamal Adam Litak assisted by Audio IC, Mohd Nurhisham Bin Mohd Sidek, fl ew 9 units of L’Acousti cs V-DOSC line source array per side on a left /right confi gurati on supported by the L’Acousti cs dV-DOSC speaker frontf ills - 3 units of 4 clusters stacked on top of the subs; SB218s and SB28s coming to a cool total of 20 unit subs altogether. He explains the decision to rely on L'Acousti cs, “We chose the V-DOSC mainly because of its excepti onal frequency response and SPL in an outdoor venue. The system has a versati lity and eff ecti veness in providing powerful, clear coverage while maintaining its quality of sound and this suited the needs of every audio engineer who was mixing for the festi val.”

And it was a good decision too as the audio systems coincided precisely with what most of the arti st's technical riders specifi ed. The

Page 83: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

audio aspects of the festi val were delegated to the highly capable hands of the FOH Engineer, Uthaiyan s/o Kumanan, monitor engineer, Yuvarajan s/o Chandra, system technician, Muhamad Ridzwan Bin Fajari and RF technician, Mohamad Ermie Bin Ahmad.

The area of concentrati on for the event consisted of one 30m stage divided into 4 secti ons namely, Performance, Monitor control, Guitar Tech, and Stage risers storage,. It was a physically challenging set-up which took 10 weeks to plan and 3 days to execute due to the sloping ground. The teams were forced to push all equipment manually onto the stage supervised by rigging IC, Iskandar bin Habdi.

Showtec is the main distributor of DTS lighti ng products in South East Asia, so it was of no surprise when Lighti ng IC, Mohd Safi ee Sawal delegated all of the festi val's automated lights to DTS lighti ng. Handling the lighti ng for the 2-night event went to Showtec's lighti ng programmer, Nordin assisted by assistant lighti ng programmer, Ching King Soon and lighti ng system technician, Ahmad Hafriz Bin Berkath. The team uti lised DTS lighti ng's XR3000 spot and XR1200 wash along with 8 units of the FOS 100 RGBA LED bars, with the engineers creati ng eff ects befi tti ng the festi vals' level of magnitude. Kamal says, “We chose the robust and durable moving heads as they are well suited for outdoor events. The control systems for lighti ng consisted of a grandMA2 full size console and Road Hog's Full Boar

console due to their fl exibility and the variable choices of pre-sets available which makes operati ons and programming easier to handle. Their capabiliti es in merging fi xtures and show fi les from one to the other makes it the ulti mate choice of lighti ng console for this type of festi val.”

This year's event was the fi rst ti me Christi e projectors were used to provide visuals. It was chosen based upon the venue's natural contours and sloping ground where it would have been diffi cult to set up LED screens needing bigger structures to hold the weight hence 2 units of Christi e Roadster HD18K projectors were introduced to give Showtec's visual IC, Chua Woon Fung, the choice of doubling an imaging or aligning two to become one. “The 2 projectors act as a backup for each other while providing a brighter and sharper image for those further away from the stage. It allowed guests to be

where ever they wanted to be but sti ll be able to see their favourite arti sts' perform up close,” explains Kamal.

For a festi val that aims to be less-mainstream and is determined to showcase not just internati onal but local musicians, Timbre Rock and Roots has once again hit the nail right on the head. The collaborati on of the teams from Timbre Group Pte Ltd and Showtec Communicati ons Pte Ltd have defi nitely wowed audiences and as Kamal says, “We hope to be given the opportunity to do the festi val again next year. Every year its getti ng bigger and bett er and we would like to add in to that mix by making next year an even louder, brighter and more enjoyable experience for all that have been supporti ng the event.”

Event agency Eventi simo, with the help of audiovisual equipment rental company, Reynolds Sound & Lighti ng

Services coordinated and produced a global sales meeti ng in Goa, India for internati onal cosmeti c company, Orifl ame Cosmeti cs S.A.

The event, which brought together approximately 800 att endees from more than 60 countries, relied on Shure Axient wireless system to ensure trouble-free operati on with automati c interference detecti on.

With hundreds of att endees from all over the world, the meeti ng incorporated nearly 500 wireless language interpretati on devices to translate conference communicati on into 20 diff erent languages. To manage this complex RF environment, India distributor

Sun Infonet recommended Axient and aft er a demonstrati on of the product benefi ts, Reynolds’ choice was clear. Reynolds selected Axient and employed the Axient Spectrum Manager connected to Wireless Workbench 6 to seamlessly determine the best available frequencies across a total of eight wireless channels in use—for ulti mate interference detecti on and avoidance.

In additi on to stellar RF performance, Reynolds also selected Axient for its advanced power management, uti lising the system’s smart lithium-ion rechargeable batt ery packs to eliminate memory eff ect problems and deliver accurate batt ery life metering. To further opti mize set-up effi ciencies and event control in the congested environment, four dual channel

receivers were put in place as well as Axient ShowLink remote control to enable real-ti me remote transmitt er adjustments.

Using Shure Axient wireless for the fi rst ti me, Reynolds Technical Director, Michael Furtado commented, “With increasing concerns about bandwidth and the necessity to get it right the fi rst ti me, Axient's channel management, integrated spectrum analyser, and most importantly, frequency diversity feature allows for completely fail-safe operati ons and remote control. Shure's proprietary Interference Detecti on and Avoidance makes Axient the ulti mate wireless system. And as a rental company, we're happy about the cost savings that result from using rechargeable batt eries.”

When asked about what Axient means for Reynolds’ future, Managing Director, Felix Remedios replied, “I feel that Axient takes care of all the ‘problem areas’ in wireless microphone operati on, and is defi nitely the most advanced wireless system in the market today. Given that our company handles the most presti gious conferences in the Indian market, our clients expect no less than the best. With our recent acquisiti on of Axient, we have shown our clients that we will sett le for nothing but the best. We have always prided ourselves on being the market leader and the technology trail-blazer that other companies strive to emulate, and with Axient, we've set a benchmark for India’s audio industry.”

GLP Spot One gets in the TVB limelightHONG KONG

Hong Kong‘s leading TV Stati on, Television Broadcast Limited (TVB), has recently made a major investment

in GLP’s impression Spot One for its studios.

TVB’s headquarters, which is also the largest commercial television producti on centre in Asia, houses 22 state of the art producti on studios, collecti vely known as TVB City.

Under a new management initi ati ve to reduce the carbon footprint of the company, TVB’s engineering department headed by Ko Cheuk Wai, had the challenging task of fi nding an LED soluti on to replace their existi ng discharge lamp automated lighti ng system.

Gaff ers, photography directors, camera operators, studio managers, and directors all joined Wai and the engineering department in the search to ensure that the fi nal decision would meet the studio’s requirements for the next generati on of automated lighti ng.

Also present at the tests was Michael Münz, General Manager of GLP Asia.

“The technical tests took place at TVB‘s Studio 1 - one of the largest TV Studios in Asia. With all of the relevant departments present, there were a lot of tests to complete in order to check that the Spot One would fulfi ll their needs. As the tests progressed, I only saw stunned faces across the board

which proved to me that the Spot One was surpassing even the high expectati ons they had for an LED spotlight,” he shares.

The Spot One was the fi rst fi xture of its kind to be released to the global market.

By harnessing the raw power of a 400 Watt RGB LED engine and running it through an advanced opti cal system, GLP has created an even beam for RGB color mixing at the same ti me achieving a focusable area for gobo projecti ons.

The result is a true hard edge LED profi le fi xture with a packed graphics engine that includes two fully indexable gobo wheels.

Cheuk Wai adds, “It was crucial for us not to make any compromise on the look of the lights and the appearance of our broadcast pictures. Color temperature, even beam output and smooth dimming are some of the

most important requirements in our studio environment. Seeing the Spot One in acti on and in direct comparison with our discharge fi xtures we realized very quickly that not only would we match, but also surpass the quality that we currently had, and gain a far superior level of effi ciency that would meet the demands of our new forward thinking initi ati ve.”

TVB also welcomed the fi ve year warranty on the LED engine that the Spot One comes with, ensuring savings for lamp replacements that they would no longer have to budget for.

This, coupled with the sealed opti cal secti on of the fi xture which reduces maintenance ti me, along with its low heat emission which reduces HVAC demands in the studios, will present a huge fi nancial saving in the coming years.

INDIA

TURBOSOUND’s switchable acti ve/passive two-way TCS-122/64 speakers and TXD-218 dual 18” subwoofers

have been installed in one of India’s most presti gious private schools.

Three pairs of 60°h x 40°v dispersion TCS-122/64 are on FOH duti es in St Helena’s Girls School in Pune — dubbed ‘Oxford of the East’ — and the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra aft er Mumbai.

Two pairs are affi xed to each side of the stage in the school’s impressive new auditorium, with a further pair centre stage to cater to the front rows.

Two additi onal TURBOSOUND TXD-218 dual 18” front-loaded subwoofers have been placed in each corner of the stage providing full bandwidth down to 30Hz with excellent front to back rejecti on.

Stage monitoring is handled by four TURBOSOUND Milan M15 powered two-way loudspeakers, which deliver a whopping 450 watt s of super-clean power from a lightweight injecti on-moulded package.

The TURBOSOUND equipment was supplied by Mumbai-based Narain Pro Audio Lighti ng Pvt Ltd, and installed by Pune-based Yash Audio Visual.

“The school’s newly opened auditorium is dedicated to enhancing musical performances, with an acousti c design by Micky Registrar,” says Narain Pro Audio’s Director, Manoj Motwani.

“We needed a sound system that would enhance the natural acousti cs aff orded to this structure and sound that was fantasti c for music and speech, and also acts as a 7.1 Dolby digital/DTH compati ble cinema. The

frequency response of the system was of paramount importance to be able to deliver on all counts,” he adds.

With TURBOSOUND’s TCS-122/64 on FOH, Motwani was able to achieve an even coverage of the auditorium over the fi rst 60ft with only 2dB variati on, and long throw capabiliti es of up to 106dB SPL at 80ft .

“The core arrayable models in our TCS contracti ng series are off ered with rotatable dispersion patt ern opti ons, including 90° x 60°, 90° x 40° and 60° x 40°,” shares TURBOSOUND’S head of marketi ng Marti n Reid.

“This gives the installer the widest possible choices to ensure that coverage of the room is opti mal.”

D.A.S. amps up the dance floor at Muse ClubSINGAPORE

A dart lounge-and-bar, complete with good drinks and good company, the Muse Club has something for

everyone.

Located at the Odeon Towers, in a district known for its restaurants, stores and bustling night life, Muse Club off ers a range of entertainment opti ons under one roof.

The club consistently packs the house with its retro and trance DJ sessions, all-night happy-hours and performances by the clubs female “muses”.

Its booming success recently led the club owners to upgrade Muse Club’s sound system to D.A.S. Audio’s professional range of sound reinforcement systems to keep the crowds coming.

Local company OTTO Integrate (S) Pte Ltd was appointed to handle Muse Club’s system upgrade.

Aft er studying the Muse Club’s requirements for a versati le and robust system that could handle the venue’s variety of performances—OTTO Integrate opted to install D.A.S. Audio systems to ensure clear precise sound throughout the club.

Specifi cally, four Avant 12A compact multi -purpose systems were fl own in a classic left /right confi gurati on for the main FOH system.

The Avant 12A’s multi -angled enclosure allows for personalized coverage and an incorporated 600W Class-D 3rd generati on amplifi er provides dynamic range and low distorti on, crucial in a space like the Muse Club.

To supplement the low-frequency requirements of the club, the Avant 12As were paired with two Avant-118A subwoofers, also installed in a left /right confi gurati on.

These systems handle the low frequencies to ensure extended bass response.

Like the Avant 12A, the Avant 118A incorporates a Class-D amp along with an in-built digital signal processor to provide clients with top-notch coverage, control and excepti onal sound.

Alan Tham, part of the OTTO Integrate team that headed the Muse Club install, was pleased with the performance and power of the D.A.S. Audio systems.

“The Avant-12A’s are loud and proud. They sound great out of the carton and minimal calibrati on is needed between the Avant 118A subwoofers and the Avant 12A full-range speakers. The rotatable 80 degrees by 50 degrees horn also provided me with opti ons on tailoring the coverage, depending on whether the speakers are fl own verti cally or horizontally. With on-board DSPs and limiters in the power modules, I will always have a peace of mind that there’s always a real party going on in the club!”

JBL speakers set the beat for Miranda HotelAustralia

Aft er an extensive $3 million renovati on, the Sutherland Shire’s Miranda Hotel has reopened complete

with a new outdoor garden bar and a totally refurbished Carmen’s Nightclub.

Compact Monitor Systems Australia designed and installed the audio system throughout the venue opti ng for a total JBL speaker soluti on.

“The JBL Control Series are my favourite speakers by a million miles,” exclaimed Bill Richardson, managing director of Compact Monitor Systems Australia.

“I’ve been a JBL-head for many years and Compact has been affi liated with JBL since the 1970’s. The JBL Control Series of speakers is the fi rst thing - and almost the only thing - we recommend to our clients. The only excepti on is if someone has a very specifi c request for a certain type of speakers.”

Bill describes the JBL Control Series as very simple, always sounding good straight out of the box.

“The ceiling mount speakers come with a back can and they don’t have to be pre-installed,” he added.

“You just cut the hole, fi t it in, turn the litt le clips and it locks into place. It’s really very easy. They come in low impedance, high impedance and really couldn’t be any simpler to use. With the back can, all the energy comes out from the front of the speaker and doesn’t get wasted in the ceiling cavity. Most importantly they sound great.”

Ten of the more powerful JBL Control 47LP and a couple of JBL Control 40CST subwoofers are used in the VIP area.

“The client had had a bad experience with the former ceiling speakers in the VIP area as they were too light and too few for the job,” explained Bill.

“I convinced them that we could get it right. The ceiling is prett y low so we had to have good distributed audio and the end result with the JBL Control 47LP speakers was great.”

The beer garden is an indoor / outdoor area thanks to a retractable roof and so four JBL Control 29AV outdoor speakers were chosen.

All of the JBL speakers are running off Crown amplifi ers; two CDi1000, three XTi6002, an XTi4002, an 1160A, and an XTi1002.

“The Crown amplifi ers are like Harman products that are really married to the JBL speakers. They have a wide variety of products from entry level to smart amplifi ers with processing built onboard. Crown amps are excellent and we never have to convince

Bill conti nues, “The wall-mount speakers such as the Control 29AV come with a magnifi cent mounti ng system that again couldn’t be any easier to use and is tamper proof. The Control 29AV and 25AV can be used outdoors so all you have to do is put a litt le fl ange on the back where the cable goes in and it becomes highly water resistant.”

Seventeen JBL Control 24CT in-ceiling speakers are used in the bar, TAB, and dining audio zones.

Page 89: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

anyone to use them, they are industry leading products. The Crowns three year warranty deal that is transferable is brilliant,” shared Bill.

Carmen’s nightclub posed several problems parti cularly an inconvenient roof angle and weight constricti ons plus acousti c problems with neighbours.

Close liaisons between the builder Infi nity, an acousti c consultant and Compact Monitor Systems through the build ensured acceptable sound proofi ng of the venue.

“The acousti c consultant asked me what I wanted the reverb ti me in the room to be and I answered zero,” commented Bill. “I asked them to make it as dead as possible and then we’d control what came out of the speaker boxes.”

Bill chose the JBL VRX Curvature Line Array speaker system which is compact and lightweight. Hung in each corner of the venue is a stack of three VRX speaker cabinets.

“They are so small and lightweight you really don’t expect a lot of noise to come out of them – but it does!” said Bill.

“Each stack gives us 45 degrees of coverage in the verti cal and 100 degrees in the horizontal. It basically does everything it is supposed to do. We get incredible SPL out of them.”

Three JBL ASB6125 dual-15” subwoofers, confi gured in 2.6 ohm resistance, are installed under the stage in a centre cluster.

“The coupling we get out of the three boxes is incredible,” Bill said.

“We confi gured it using the control system so that we have several modes. The DJ mode is fairly obvious with two-way stereo left – right anywhere you’re standing in the room but when the a band is onstage the rear boxes get turned off and the subs get wound back to match the top boxes and you have a normal band PA. It’s fantasti c and very simple to switch between the two via the DJ’s touch screen.”

The BSS BLU range of products was chosen for the audio control and signal processing. Two of the BLU-100 12 x 8 processors were chosen for the job; one acts as the signal processor for the main PA in the nightclub, and the other as DSP and control for the balance of the venue.

“The enti re signal processing including eq, limiters, ti me alignment, etc is done using this box,” explained Bill.

“There is litt le or no interface for the visiti ng users of the system other than what is presented on their mixing console(s). This provides full protecti on and maintains the integrity of the audio system no matt er who is using it.”

The Soundweb BLU-100 has a fi xed confi gurati on of 12 inputs and 8 outputs, fully confi gurable signal processing and fault tolerant digital audio bus. The soft ware’s open architecture and the drag and drop method of set-up provides a simple and user friendly design and control user interface.

The 6 logic outputs and 12 control inputs mean the BLU-100 can be fully integrated with standard GPIO devices which Compact Monitor Systems has done with the venue’s control system.

“Jands provided excepti onal support and assistance throughout the build and a great deal of the praise goes deservedly to their team of professionals,” concluded Bill.

EAW’s Avalon gets the crowd talking at Club Gossip

SINGAPORE

Nestled in the premise of St James Power Stati on, an ingeniously converted coal-fi red power stati on

from the 1920s, Club Gossip is the newest party spot to get on deck for Singapore’s night scene.

Operati ng since early March 2013, the club décor adapts to a standard nightclub style, with an air of spaciousness marked by its dusky gray-black walls and simplisti c furniture.

Regular guest appearances from renowned Vietnamese DJs spinning house music with Vietnamese beats, and frequent themed evenings such as Vietnamese Night on Sundays, also help to keep things fresh for patrons.

Under the stewardship of Eugene Lim, the club operates from 10pm to 6am daily, and is hugely Vietnamese-inspired with its creati ve use of LED washes, linear laser beams and illuminated dance fl oors.

“Our Club Director loved the concepts of clubs in Vietnam and decided to bring it over to share it with the people in Singapore,” shared Louis Low, Marketi ng & Admin at Gossip Entertainment Pte Ltd.

Undoubtf ully, the large 5m in height and 7.5m in width LED wall and panels positi oned behind and at the front of the 1.5-meter raised DJ platf orm, makes for an incredibly visually striking interior.

However, it is the sound system that drives the rumour mill around Club Gossip.

Fuelling the infl ux of feverish dancers at the main dance fl oor are two pairs of bright red Avalon loudspeakers. Gossip is the fi rst and only nightclub in Singapore to be powered by EAW’s Avalon.

Louis enthused, “This place isn’t subtle. When the clock strikes 10pm, there are no quiet zones in Gossip. The club is essenti ally transformed into one big dance fl oor.”

Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd (E&E) was tasked to design and install the sound system at Gossip.

The main dance fl oor is hemmed in by four EAW club-two Avalon bi-amplifi ed three-way systems, neatly mounted on rising columns; while four EAW sub-two Avalon subwoofers, driven by four Powersoft DIGAM K3, two DIGAM M14D and two DIGAM K6 amplifi ers, supplement the sound system.

The adjacent space facing the bar, houses the side-fi lls adorned by two EAW club-three Avalon systems, duti fully powered by one Powersoft DIGAM M14D and DIGAM M50Q amplifi er.

A further two EAW club-fi ve Avalon three-way speakers, also driven by one Powersoft DIGAM M20D amplifi er, supplement the VIP room.

All speakers are aestheti cally specifi ed in black with red grills and horns to add an edgy touch to Gossip.

Stage monitoring over at the DJ booth is done via two EAW LA212 speakers, driven by Powersoft ’s DIGAM M20D amplifi ers whilst processing is handled by an Ashly Protea 3.6SP.

A further two EAW UX3600 digital system processors complement the enti re set-up, to help manage all Avalon speaker systems in the club.

“We are defi nitely in awe of the sound system. Coupled with our surreal lighti ng and lasers, Gossip is defi nitely the place for a full-blown visual and sonic experience. Not for the faint hearted!” concludes Louis.

EAW QX series addSingapore

Tucked neatly along Cecil Street in downtown Singapore, club kyō boasts an underground locati on and

atmosphere, complete with low lighti ng and earthy tones that add to the warm glow in the club.

Like its sister venue The Vault at South Bridge Road, kyō was formerly occupied by a bank.

The low-ceiling 6,000 sq ft basement sits about 150 and accommodates up to 220 people, with a central bar that measures up to 24 meters; making it possibly the longest bar in Singapore.

Past the alluring wooden door and the dramati c artpiece adorning the entrance at the stairwell, the place hums with heavy Japanese fl avour, as evident in its use of contemporary Japanese artwork and design of linear lines and wooden textures, set against a backdrop of rough-cut stone walls and minimalisti c furniture.

“We came up with a multi -form concept for kyō, ti nged with a bit of modernism and Japanese-inspired ideas. It’s our intenti on to provide a form of escapism for visitors, both visually and sonically,” shared Godwin Pereira, the man behind Singapore-based lifestyle group Limited Editi on Concepts Pte Ltd.

Should you be up for some sake-delics and gourmet tapas persuasion, the three-counter bar enti ces visitors with its rich selecti on of premium spirits, wines and beers.

kyo prides itself as a true, visual feast. The art adorned walls help add a handmade quality and laidback vibe to the place.

“We wanted a human element and of course, art does that really, really well. Our spraypaint arti st Sino, is quite awesome at what he does so we got him to come in on a brief to capture the Japanese element in this

space, which is brilliantly conveyed through his geisha mask inspired artwork here,” shared Godwin.

To enhance the visual details in its central artpiece, kyō adds visual mapping to the mix, handled by fi ve units of Epson-EB435.

He explains, “The white spaces on the artpiece is done deliberately to make space for visual mapping. We came up with the idea aft er a few tequila shots! Like a mask, the visuals keep changing, which keeps people guessing. Changing the texture and the litt le details help make kyō diff erent.”

Naturally, kyō pays an equal, near-obsessive level to detail when it comes to club sound.

Electronics and Engineering Pte Ltd (E&E) was contracted to install the audio system at kyō.

“The system we went with was an interesti ng mix. I’ve always been a sound buff and I love my analogue systems. But when we got this space, it’s just not practi cal where we’ve got events and people screaming into the microphones on a daily basis. Analogue is too sensiti ve and tender for day-to-day hard-running applicati ons,” Godwin mused.

“Being in a multi -form venue, we needed a hardy system that is sti ll very warm and robust sounding. E&E happened to carry the EAW system which I’ve worked with before.”

“I’ve always liked EAWs. What att racted me to the QX series is that most of the ti me, it is used in churches, which is strange. I like taking that and putti ng it in a club to be diff erent. The 12 inch sound resonates in a diff erent way, which gives a nice, warmer and ti ghter punch,” he adds.

Chip On Board LEDs. How do they work?By Mike Wood

This arti cle fi rst appeared in the Winter 2013 editi on of PROTOCOL magazine. We thank Mike Wood, PLASA and

PROTOCOL for giving us permission to reprint this arti cle. Mike Wood takes a look at a method of mounti ng and using LEDs which is gaining popularity in entertainment lighti ng products. You’ll see it referred to as chip-on-board or COB. What does that mean and what advantages does it give to the product designer?

The fi rst thing to say is that COB is not actually a new technique. It dates back many years both in LED usage and with semiconductors as a whole. Chip-on-board is a method of packaging and using semiconductors and has nothing to do with the design and manufacture of the semiconductor die or LED itself. We are most familiar with seeing semiconductor dies assembled into a plasti c or ceramic housing to create a component. These packages form the familiar computer chips we see on every circuit board and are supplied with standardized leads or connecti ons that make them easy to assemble onto boards. This packaging also provides protecti on to the semiconductor die. One downside of the chip style packaging is that it also adds a lot of bulk to the semiconductor. What was a 2 mm x 2 mm die that’s 1 mm thick becomes a 10 mm x 20 mm package that’s 5 mm thick, perhaps 250X the volume. This potenti al for extreme reducti on in size is one of the fi rst reason COB devices were used. With a COB device, the semiconductor die has no packaging and instead is mounted directly onto the circuit board or substrate.

that, if packaged conventi onally, might be 3cm square just to accommodate all the connecti ons. Instead, the silicon semiconductor die is adhered directly to the green circuit board and the connecti ons are made through fi ne gold wires that are bonded from the die straight to points on the circuit board with no intermediate connectors. The enti re assembly is then encased in the blob of black epoxy that you can see in the photograph that provides protecti on. The end result is ti ny compared to a packaged chip.

Let’s take a look at how LEDs are packaged and how they could also take advantage of chip-on-board techniques. The most familiar and oldest LED package is shown in Figure 2 below.

Chip-on-board processor in a calculator

Figure 1 shows an example of a COB chip in a pocket calculator. The circular black blob to the right of the photograph is the processor that provides all the calculati ng power. It’s a complex digital semiconductor

This is a through hole package where the LED die is mounted to one of the lead wires (which also provides the heat sink), and the enti re assembly is surrounded by a transparent domed package. The two lead wires pass through holes on a circuit board where they are soldered to copper traces on the board. Figure 2 is roughly to scale, and you can see how large the package is compared to the ti ny die inside.

Next up is surface mount packaging, as shown in Figure 3 below.

Page 95: Entertainment Technology Asia May-June 2013

In this case the die is mounted to a heatsink slug, which helps in transporti ng heat out of the LED die and into the substrate or an external heat sink. In this case the electrical connecti ons are made through tabs around the edge of the package onto the top surface of the board, they don’t go through holes. Surface mount packages are simpler for automated pick-and-place machines to handle, and provide much bett er thermal contact for the LED. The connecti ons to the LED die within the package are made through ti ny bond wires, which are welded across to internal connecti on points. As with the through hole package, the packaging is large compared with the size of the die.

Figure 4 below shows the same LED die as Figure 3, but now as a chip-on-board assembly.

LED die

Heat flow

Gold bond wire

Conductive epoxy

Substrate (Circuit board)

The LED die is bonded directly to a connecti on pad on the substrate or circuit board using a conducti ve adhesive of some kind, oft en an epoxy. This provides both electrical connecti on for one side of the LED and a path for heat to escape. The second electrical connecti on comes from a bond wire, just as was used inside the surface mount package, but now used externally directly to a gold plated pad on the substrate. Compare this with Figure 3 and you can see how much smaller the assembly is. It also provides the shortest possible path for heat fl ow into the substrate and, therefore, allows the LED to be run at higher power, while sti ll extracti ng the heat and keeping it cool.

The packaging shown in fi gure 4 is very simple, the LED die is mounted on a fl at substrate, which provides litt le or no opti cal control of the device. More sophisti cated COB packaging can do bett er than that. Figure 5 shows a system where the substrate is formed with an opti cal cup that can act as a refl ector to direct the light from the LED die while sti ll retaining the advantage of small size and good heat transfer. Even more sophisti cated designs are becoming

commonplace, with further opti cal components being incorporated into the structure.

The most exacti ng porti on of this assembly is the bond wire from the die to the substrate. These wires can be incredibly thin, 15 – 50 μm is typical, and oft en made of gold, but they also can be made of copper in high power LEDs where signifi cant current fl ow is required. In those circumstances, you also oft en see multi ple bond wires being used in parallel to carry the necessary current. These wires are extremely delicate and always require some kind of protecti on. This protecti on can be transparent silicone or epoxy similar to that shown in the calculator in Figure 1, but, with LEDs, it’s more likely that protecti on is provided as part of an external lens assembly, window, or other opti cal device.

contains a thermistor and all connecti on traces. The bare LED dies and the bond wires are protected with a clear glass window. You can clearly see the multi ple bond wires connecti ng the top surfaces of each of the four dies to connecti on pads at the sides of the assembly. The reason I call this a hybrid device is that the enti re assembly is provided as a pre-assembled package by the manufacturer and can then be used with conventi onal circuit boards. This hybrid model helps solve one of the major problems with COB devices: serviceability. A COB device is great when it’s working and, because of the reduced number of connecti on points, should be more reliable than other packages, but is almost impossible to service if it does have a problem. Removing and replacing COB devices from their substrates is someti mes possible, but is very diffi cult and requires specialist equipment. If a single circuit board contained fi ft y separate LED COB devices, you may have no opti on but to replace the enti re board if one fails. Hybrid designs avoid this problem.

COB LED assemblies like this have been around for many years from a number of manufacturers, oft en providing compact, high density arrays of LEDs. I can recall testi ng them over ten years ago in high powered LED products, so the concept isn’t new. However, what is new is the widespread use in a wider range of products, not just specialist high powered devices. The substrate can be a conventi onal circuit board, or something with bett er thermal properti es, such as ceramic. Figure 7 shows the potenti al advantages of the technique when used with an LED array.

Figure 6 shows an example of a hybrid device where four LED dies—red, green, blue, and white—are bonded in a COB manner to a single substrate. In this case that substrate is a copper-cored circuit board which also

disk of phosphor coated material. This serves both to provide protecti on of the dies, and to phosphor-convert a large proporti on of the emitt ed blue light to a yellow color. The mixed combinati on of the blue light from the LEDs and the yellow from the phosphor disk produces a white light. The fi nal package is very effi cient, in the example illustrated well over 100 lm/W, and easy for the designer to mount and use. The closely spaced array of small dies is cost-eff ecti ve to manufacture and produces a well homogenized beam that behaves very much like a single large light source.

At the top of Figure 7 is a typical RGB LED array of the kind comprising surface mount packages used in many current LED products. You’ll see this type of arrangement in many wash lights. Each individual package incorporates opti cs and connecti ons, and they are usually mounted as close together as possible on the underlying substrate. In contrast, the lower diagram in fi gure 7 shows the exact same LED dies, but this ti me mounted as chip-on-board. In this example, it is possible to mount twice as many dies in the same space, while sti ll maintaining good heat transfer through the substrate. Each die may sti ll have its own opti cs or may, as illustrated here, share a single large opti c over the enti re array. This technique is been used extensively in LED backlights for monitors and also is being increasingly seen in entertainment lighti ng products. The closer spacing of the dies improves color homogenizati on and helps get rid of multi colored shadows. The potenti al downside, as I menti oned earlier, is the lack of serviceability, so you’ll likely see hybrid soluti ons or boards made up of smaller daughter boards to minimize the cost of replacement. The most common hybrids are the single packages containing three or four dies arranged as RGB or RGBW. This allows common lensing for the group. We are also starti ng to see non-hybrid soluti ons where multi ple dies are mounted in a true COB manner.

I’m sure you are also familiar with the kind of LED package shown in Figure 8. These devices are again a hybrid COB package. In this case there is an array of blue LEDs mounted in COB fashion to the substrate, and then the enti re array is covered with a

Another improvement with COB also looks to be helpful for our industry: direct to metal mounti ng. Designers oft en choose to mount LEDs to a metal-backed circuit board that can assist with heat transfer (and heat is always, always the biggest problem). With COB, the die can be mounted directly onto this metal backing through a hole in the top layers of the board. This gives the best possible thermal contact with almost nothing in between the die and the heat sink. There is one layer in the sandwich rather than the four or fi ve you get with a surface-mount device.

Take a look at the next LED luminaire you get. Chances are you’ll start to see more and more chip-on-board constructi on. LED technology conti nues to develop so rapidly that last year’s products are already out of date. This is the fi ft h arti cle in this column with the ti tle, How do LEDs Work, and I’m quite sure it won’t be the last. Siswa Azmi Mohd Mubari. Director. Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaHaving grown up in and around the rental and staging industry in Malaysia, Siswa Azmi Mohd Mubari aka Ajun Mubari, has seen and done almost everything. A man who believes in the philosophy of 'Learning As You Go', has personally trained most of the staff that have passed through the doors of Mubari Group of Companies (Mubari G.O.C). Speaking to him at his quiet residence in Kuala Lumpur, you can feel the passion emanati ng from a person who has dedicated much of his life to an industry he loves.

1. When did you fi rst get involved with the Entertainment industry? In the 1980s when I was in primary school. I was initi ally inspired by my father, Hj. Mubari Nasuha, who is the founder of Mubari G.O.C.

2. What has been the most memorable aspect of your work thus far?Doing lighti ng for Merdeka Day on the 31st of August in 2010 at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. Normally, the committ ee which organised the celebrati ons would hold the parades and acti viti es outdoors with lots of food to go along with it. But for 2010, the day fell during the fasti ng month for Muslims and it was decided that the celebrati on would be held indoors for the fi rst ti me ever. I was in charge of the lighti ng and I had to collaborate with diff erent government agencies, the result was superb. It was beauti fully rendered and colourful. Everyone, especially the Prime Minister, was very happy and all the eff ects and confi gurati ons came out without a glitch.

3. What has been the greatest challenge?Too many jobs! Haha! What I mean when I say too many is that we frequently get the same type of jobs within one week. Our speciality is live TV broadcasti ng and someti mes, we will get a few diff erent TV stati ons mixed in with other functi ons and while we have the equipment, we are missing a vital ingredient – the crew! We have a staff

of over 50 permanent crew separated to do audio, lighti ng, stage + truss structure, power generati on, transportati on, HD multi camera producti on, visual led screen and projector (all in-house equipment) but its is sti ll not enough.

4. What are you most happy about with your current work?I get the most sati sfacti on when I know that my client is happy with the results. Aft er an event, whenever someone comes over to me and shakes my hand and says “Good job”, it makes all the tension and stress of an event worth it.

5. What advice do you have for those joining the entertainment industry?Pati ence. You need pati ence in this industry and also that you can't come into the line thinking of it as 'just a job', you have to really care and commit in order to make the most of your job.

6. If you were not in this job or industry what do you think you would be doing?Actually, I have a Degree in Chemical Engineering. So if I wasn't doing this, I would most probably be in the oil and gas industry like most of my friends. Most of my classmates now hold Senior Managers positi ons and make at least 40-50K ringgit a month.

7.Do you have any hobbies?Collecti ng gadgets! From handphones to computers to even remote helicopters. I love the feeling when you get to explore a new type of gadget and fi gure out its diff erent components.

8. Is there any particular person in this industry that you admire most?Defi nitely I would say my father. He was one of the pioneers in Kuala Lumpur industry

during the 80s. He taught me everything about the industry and he prepared me for life within it and he didn't shield me from all the hardships and problems that I would face. He was very real about it and I admire him for that.

9.What are your favourite tools of the trade? There are so many, but if I had to choose right now, I would say the Nexo STM. It is so easy to handle and the sound quality is excellent.

10.What would you like to achieve in the coming years?I would like to see Mubari G.O.C expand outside of Malaysia into ASEAN and further. Right now, I have a few overseas clients calling me and trying to book jobs months in advance but in Malaysia its really diffi cult to do that as everything here is immediate, so I am trying to fi gure out a way around this problem.

Mubari G.O.C specialises in professional sound, lighti ng, trussing, lasers and musical equipment. To get in touch with Ajun, email him at: [email protected]
