Straight from the horse’s mouth: The pages of Shakespeare came to life outdoors at Cabrillo on Friday, May 25, and Saturday, May26, in the Drama Club’s production of “The Merchant of Venice”
A father’s love is often themost precious gift a daugh-ter can receive. Unfortu-nately, though, inShakespeare’s Merchant ofVenice, the skewed love oftwo very different fatherscomplicated, and in somecases ruined, the lives ofmany. Fair and gracious, Portia(portrayed beautifully bygraduating senior, CleaMiller), had to carry out thewishes her father entreatedupon her at the time of his death;conditions which prevented Portia’schoosing of a husband. The choice
had to be made “depending on thecaskets” (three boxes, only one ofwhich contained a portrait of Portia,
signifying the correct casket). In avery tense sequence of scenes, all
actors played their partwell, the suitors handlingtheir rejection with dignity. Bassanio (played bysophomore Efren Ramirez)was the only suitor playingthe casket game who wasnot rich, or well known.Best friends with Antonio(played by sophomoreBrandon Powell), togetherthey borrowed money fromthe “money lender”, theJew, Shylock (senior DavidMaraszek). Maraszek
played the role of the bitter sup-pressed outcast well, allowing theaudience to feel Shylock’s pain.

Because of the shifts inthe play’s attitude, from de-pressing, to humorous, theplay was a challenge forthe actors to convey to theaudience.

Okay, so far the PS2 has only one mech-themed game, Ar-mored Core 2, which is still a fantastic title. However, it’sstill only one game. The PS2 had been in sore need of an-other lately. Fortunately, Konami has delivered with Zone ofEnders. Z.O.E. takes place on a futuristic space colony in orbit aboveJupiter. A rogue military faction is attempting to seize it inorder to steal two new prototype mecha, or “Frames” as theyare called. You play the role of Leo Starbuck, a young boycaught up in the middle of the siege. He stumbles upon oneof the new models, called Jehuty, accidentally activates it,and the story takes off from there. The graphics are beautiful. Every detail of the Frames thatyou duel with can be seen, shrapnel flies when you demolisha building, the entire screen even distorts when an enemynails you with a heavy weapon. The explosions are equallyas good, all with no slowdown, ever. The only bad part isthat there is a fog that limits your view of the farther areasaround you. The controls are a dream. Even a novice gamer can pickupon the controls quickly, thanks to the guided tutorials. You
What do you get when you combine a pudgy, single, middle-aged British woman who has a bad nicotine addiction with atiring job, a mother who is always full of complaints and aninferiority complex? You get a movie scriptthat keeps you laugh-ing, yet never lets youforget that life, in gen-eral, is better thanpeople make it out tobe.Bridget Jones’s Diary, based on the best-selling novel byHelen Fielding, stars Rene Zellweger as the loud and over-weight Bridget Jones who makes it hard for anyone to deny

control where Jehuty faces with the left analog stick, controlits altitude and weapons with the shape buttons, and use theshoulder buttons to control things like Dash and Burst moves. The only bad point to these controls is the sub-weapon selec-tion, which is controlled by the directional pad. During anintense combat scene, it was very difficult to change the sub-weapons. Sometimes the story can be emotion-laden, but the beauti-ful, anime style cut scenes more than make up for this fact. And to add replay value, the story changes as a result of whatactions you take. Zone of Enders is a must-own game, especially if you are afan of the Big-Robots-Duking-It-Out-In-A-City genre. Don’tmiss this fantastic title... oh, and the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demodoesn’t hurt either...
“Who’s that girl?” Oh, it’s Eve, “blowin’ ya mind” justone more time with her new album Scorpion. Eve enteredthe music scene and “blew ya mind” for the first time threeyears ago when her first album Ruff Ryder’s First Lady wasreleased. Now, her followup album has proved, once again, that “Love is Blind” and that even females can become fa-mous rappers. Scorpion is the one album that takes the “rap” genre andmakes it fun for all audiences. Gwen Stefani, from alterna-tive band No Doubt left her “Tragic Kingdom” to make asurprise appearance in the hit song “Let Me Blow ya Mind.” With the combination of femininity and a hard-core, in-your-face attitude, Eve astounds even the skeptics. So go toyour local music “dealer” and buy Scorpion... I guaranteethat you will not regret the purchase.

clever, the plot is interesting and when you leave the MovieTheater, you’ll want to kick yourself for not appreciating thelittle things in life.“The film not only works better than expected but gets theimportant things right, starting of course, with Zellweger’sBridget, and Bridget’s mind set,” said Jay Carr from the Bos-ton Globe, who gave the film excellent reviews. E Cabrillo’s Auxiliary Team put ona dance show Friday and Saturday,May 4th and 5th. The show cost fivedollars and was held in the LittleTheater. The 3rd annual springdance show was titled “A Tribute toDisney’” and consisted of 15 dancesand an opener. In the opener, a young girl dressedas Belle walked around the stagewhile the dancers moved andgrooved around her to Beauty andthe Beast’s, “Be Our Guest.” Thegirls and guys busted moves thatwould make even *N SYNC lookbad. A lot of sweat, Makeup, andhard work were put into the produc-tion as well as bright colors, crazyhair and masks, and ribbon dancers.During the performance the teamflipped and jumped about, pullingstunts that Britney would be proudof. One of the highlights of the nightis when senior Carl Banks jumpedoff stage during “One Jump Ahead,”(from Aladdin) and landed in the lapof Ms. Carlton on Saturday night.Later Carlton was brought on stageand had the privilege of wearing thecrown during “Topsy Turvey.” The finale consisted of soot onfaces, a chimney top, and awesomechoreography as the dancers pre-sented “Step-N-Time,” from MaryPoppins. The late Walt Disneywould have been pleased.

This weekend, undoubtedly (be-cause this is Lompoc), you and yourfriends will rack your brains forsomething to do. Well I can alreadyhelp you narrow down that list with
one piece of ad-vice; don’t go see“The MummyReturns.” Because so many people lovedthe first one, they will all rush outmindlessly to see the sequel. How-ever, “Mummy Returns” is not oneof those incredible movies you’ll gosee over and over again. It seems tofollow the stereotype that sequelsaren’t half the movie their predeces-sor was. The plot is very simple so ifyou’re easily confused maybe you’ll
PhotographerBrennan NyeBrennan NyeBrennan NyeBrennan NyeBrennan Nye like this one, but it reminded me
more of a Disney cartoon than anaction movie. The bad guys madesilly mistakes while the good guyscontinually got lucky against allodds. You could basically sum up
the whole movie as; the badguys steal a magic artifact andkidnap the good guy’s kid. Thekid then leaves obvious clues(which the bad guys fail to no-tice, of course) to help the goodguys find him. In the end thereis mass fighting and surprise!Guess who wins?
Whilethe plotwas basi-c a l l ynon-exis-tent, them o v i edid havegood spe-
cial effects. They did a good jobmaking all the fictional creatureslook real. However, I thought themovie seemed like a rip off of acouple other movies. For example, there was a scenewhere people are running through afield and being attacked by “de-mons”. This scene was almost iden-tical to the scene in Jurassic Park’ssequel when the velociraptors areattacking people as they run througha field. And, of course, like everyother movie that’s been outsince“The Matrix” the filmmakersfelt it necessary to throw in that slo-motion fighting affect that workedso well in “The Matrix,” but is alittle played out by now. Special affects and the movies“sequel factor” are the director’sonly hope of making any moneywith this film. So my advice to youis don’t waste your time or moneyon this movie.
