Marhaba Motorsports fans will be aware that

Oman Air has, for a number of years now, sponsored our own home-grown racing talent Ahmad Al Harthy and the Oman Air Racing Team in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. Ahmad has been a regular feature atop the winner’s podium, and has got off to a storming start this season, with three wins in the first four races – a fantastic achievement which bodes well for the remainder of racing calendar and puts Oman Air firmly in the spotlight. Ahmad thus leads the season so far.

Another outstanding achievement is the Oman Air boat’s performance in the Extreme Sailing Series. Skippered by world known Morgan Larson and crewed by a highly accomplished team of Omani and international sailors, Oman Air has led the field to date, taking first place in Muscat and setting the pace in Qingdao, China.

I have been thrilled to watch the progress of both teams and look forward to seeing Oman Air take the top spot many more times throughout the coming year.

On the other hand, and turning to travel, the northern hemisphere’s summer months approach, and thoughts turn to holidays. Oman Air’s network of more than 40 destinations provides a fantastic choice of locations in which to relax or explore diversified surroundings. From the historic architecture and countless museums of London and Paris to the extraordinary landscapes and natural life of our 10 Indian destinations, from the serenity of the Middle East to the bustle of Bangkok, Oman Air is perfectly placed to arrange your ideal vacation.

And, of course, should you wish to be entranced by the culture, traditions, history and hospitality of the Middle East, there is no better destination than the Sultanate of Oman.

Wherever you choose to go this summer, I wish you the very best and we look forward to welcoming you back to Oman Air very soon.

Queen Beatrix of Netherlands pays an official visit to the Freezone Sohar in January 2012.

H.E. Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa during his visit to the Freezone Sohar in November 2011.

The Freezone Sohar is a joint venture between the Government of Oman, the Port of Rotterdam and SKIL Infrastructure. It is strategically located in the vicinity of the Port of Sohar with a deep draft of 18 m. Oman is a country with geopolitical stability and with easy access to both GCC and the surrounding countries. The Port together with the Freezone also share the excellent road connectivity with the new upcoming Expressways to Muscat, Abu Dhabi & Dubai. The development of this area also includes Sohar Airport to commence operations in 2012 and the new rail link to be completed by 2015.

In December 2010 the Royal Decree was granted for Freezone Sohar. This means that it is ruled under a special free zone law. Issuing the Royal Decree with the special incentives, shows that the Government realizes the importance of Freezone Sohar as a tool to attract foreign investment and thereby increasing the trade exchange volume, enhancing comprehensive economic development and activating investment in various trades, industrial and service sectors. Freezone Sohar is proposed to be developed in three phases. The first phase (500ha) has already attracted investors from different countries.

Freezone Sohar has finalized bringing in essential infrastructure into its industrial area. Roads have been asphalted and lampposts have been installed. Moreover first movers, like Dunes International (Manufacturers of steel castings), Indsil (Ferro-chrome processing) and Container Solutions (handling and storage of containers) have started their ground breaking and construction works.

Freezone Sohar is also pleased to welcome a new client: Arab Food and Sugar Supply (traders in food commodities). It is expected that they can be operational this summer. Meanwhile first cargo is being shipped into the Freezone by Middle East Tubular Services LLC.

Furthermore, Freezone tenants can enjoy a new shipping service between Sohar and Mundra. As from half April, AGS Liner Shipping Services will connect Sohar directly with the Indian Sub-Continent, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the UAE. This in addition to the direct new line from APL to the USA and Far East and the connectivity to other logistics hubs.

Freezone Sohar represents a great generation of economic growth in the Al Batinah Region in particular and the Sultanate of Oman in general.

Air wavesIt was all eyes on two Omani boats, Oman Air and The Wave, Muscat, which stormed to first and second place in the final race of the Extreme Sailing Series.

Fans can expect two new countries and three new venues to accompany the five proven Host Cities from the highly-charged 2011 circuit. Having attracted more than 287,000 spectators in 2011, including more than one millon You Tube hits, and millions of

other media viewers and listeners, the Extreme Sailing Series brings the racing action inshore, with the format

for each Act of the Series focusing on three days staged in a ‘stadium’, open to the public and VIP guests.

Maritime heritage Oman Sail offers innovative training programmes for thousands of young Omanis, inspiring a new generation to discover and enjoy sailing and reconnecting them with their maritime heritage. For some participants, that means competing at the very highest international levels and the Extreme Sailing Series has, over the last two years, provided a great showcase for Omani sailing talent.

Oman Air has sponsored Oman Sail for the last two years, including its participation in the Extreme Sailing Series, its bid for success in the Route Du Rhum and its successful smashing of Round Britain and Ireland world records. The sponsorship is part of Oman Air’s commitment to supporting Omani talent and helping young people within the Sultanate to achieve their full potential. The sponsorship also helps to raise awareness internationally of Oman as a unique destination for tourism and business.

Teamwork After their victory, the Oman Air team – skipper Morgan Larson, Will Howden, four-time Olympian Charlie Ogletree, Omani Nasser Al

Mashari (competing in his second Extreme Series) and American Max Bulger – are six points clear of the Wave, Muscat. Larson said the event had been very demanding but that his team’s secret lay in the fact that they enjoyed the sport. “Our learning curve was quite steep. But this was really hard racing and any team could have won going into those last couple of races. We were just lucky they went well for us. I know its going to be a challenging season and we’ll get tougher conditions thrown at us and for sure we’re going to have to eat a few of them. We just need to keep enjoying the sailing as I think that was the key to our success working together. We knew if we held our position things would be good, but in these boats you never know what can happen so you just have to keep on pushing all the way to the finish.”

The Arabian Peninsula is proud to present the younger sister of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, a fun and breath-taking mix of the ultra-modern and the remote past

Dear Abu

(Image sources: Photolibrary, Shutterstock)

Both CNN and Fortune magazine have described Abu Dhabi, not Dubai, as the richest city in the world. The capital of United Arab Emirates is certainly one of the most modern cities in the world, boasting international luxury hotel chains, innovative sky-scrapers, grandiose shopping malls and plenty of large gardens and parks.

Underneath the glitz and the glamour though, lies a truly ancient legacy, one that dates back a good 5000 years to a time when the tiny island was the crossroads of long-gone civilisations. The name

24 international Destination

Abu Dhabi is thought to mean Father of Deer, which probably refers to the presence Dhibaa gazelles in the area. Up until the 1930s, the city was the world centre of the pearl trade, an industry that slowly declined as the future potential of oil was realised.

The excavations of a Danish archeologist in 1961 provided the first glimpse of that

Page 29: ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE IT'S OMAN

InternatIOnal DestInatIOn 25

distant era, when this part of the Arabian peninsula was the focus of a vibrant, rich culture that managed the production and distribution of vast amounts of copper all over the known world, and in return facilitated contact and the sharing of expertise between remote cultures.

People are still pouring in from all around the world! Abu Dhabi recorded its most successful year ever in terms of hotel guest arrivals with some 2,111,611 people staying in the Emirate’s hotels and hotel apartments – beating its 2011 stretch target of 2 million by more than 100,000 guests.

Retail therapy: Shopping is something of a national pastime in Abu Dhabi, with something for every taste and wallet, from ultra-modern malls to small souqs. What better to buy than something that will outperform your stock options and make you look pretty good

too – gold! Gold is priced according to the international daily rate, and there is a wide range of styles. You can also buy gold ingots in varying sizes, either for investment or to have moulded into your own design. The Gold Souk on 4th Street in Madinat Zayed has many jewellers. You can also find some big-name jewellers in the shopping malls, such as Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany & Co. Regional jewellers include Damas, Pure Gold and Rivoli. Be prepared to bargain!

Page 30: ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE IT'S OMAN

Red carpet treatment: Buying a carpet can be a real thrill. Most of the carpets are from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey and they come in an exquisite array of designs and colours. As a very rough guide, the higher the number of knots per square inch, the higher the price and the better the quality. Silk is more expensive than wool, and rugs from Iran are generally more valuable than the equivalent from Turkey or Kashmir. Hand-made carpets are never quite perfect and the pile is uneven, yet they are more valuable than their machine-made counterparts. A good starting point is the Carpet Souq at the port end of Mina Road. Mina Souq is similarly well stocked.

Mementoes Genuine traditional items, such as wooden chests, can be very expensive and increasingly difficult to find, although

‘antique’ copies are widely available. Traditional wooden doors can be hung as works of art or transformed into furniture, for example as tables with glass tops. Look out for Arabian coffee pot and cups, woodcarvings in the form of dhows, ancient-looking rifles, muzzle-loading guns and the functional yet decorative ‘khanjar’ (a short, curved dagger in an elaborately wrought sheath) are also popular buys. Traditional wedding jewellery made of heavy silver or gold and crafted into necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings are coveted forms of historic art, and make beautiful displays when mounted into glass box frames.

Cultural After all that shopping, take a break and learn some more about Emirati culture, at the Heritage Village on the Corniche Breakwater. Here, you can almost feel yourself drifting backwards in time in this oasis-style village complete with a ‘souq’, camels, craftsmen working on jewellery and copper goods and relish the changes as you take in the modern skyline over the water.

Al Bateen Shipyard is on the western coast of Al Bateen, close to the Corniche and the oldest inhabited area of the city. Here visitors can learn of the ancient traditions, still practiced today, which forged the traditional ‘dhow’ sailing boat, one of the sturdiest vessels afloat.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi personifies religious architecture in Abu Dhabi. The largest mosque in Abu Dhabi, it is a key place of worship during Eid when it is able to accommodate nearly 40,000 worshippers. Its architectural features include the world’s largest carpet, imported 24-carat gold plated chandeliers from Germany made of Swarovski crystals, calligraphy styles on the Qiba wall and unique lighting along the pools arcades. The mosque is open to all religions with complimentary ‘walk-in’ guided tours available from Saturday to Thursday.

Race city An absolute must-see in Abu Dhabi is Ferrari World. Situated on Yas Island, just a 30-minute drive from the city centre (and 50 minutes from Dubai Marina), this is the world’s largest indoor theme park. From pit wall strategy and simulated F1 driving to cinemas and amusement rides, this is a thrilling day out. Visit www.ferrariworldabudhabi.com to plan your visit!

Dates to recall Abu Dhabi comprises many archaeological sites that shed important light on its rich, deep-rooted history. If you are approaching the capital coming from the Al Maqta Bridge, visit Al Maqta Fort, built 200 years ago, now fully restored and serving as a Tourist Information Centre. On the down-town Khalid ibn Al Walid street, Qasr Al Hosn, or The White Fort, initially built in 1761, was the traditional residence for the Al Nahyan tribe leaders, rulers of Abu Dhabi. More recently, the Aldar Head Quarter Tower (shown below) has become the latest fascination of Abu Dhabi, as it is the world’s only spherical building.

Abu Dhabi’s heritage heartland is Al-Ain, the Emirate’s second largest city. It is home to the Hili Archaeological Gardens – a site which bears traces of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. Pottery and stonework found at the site can now been seen in the Al Ain Museum. Other important sites include: Umm Al Nar island (2500-2000BC), Jebel Hafit tombs, (3200-2700BC), Marwah Island, 100 km west of Abu Dhabi, and Bida Bint Saud region, north of Al Ain.

Explore One way to get a feel for the land is to drive to Liwa, an historic oasis town at the entry to the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) the world’s largest uninterrupted sand mass. Liwa has massive expanses of awesome desert and the biggest dunes this side of the Sahara. Al Gharbia’s history is encompassed in the myriad of ancient forts, which dot the landscape, and together present a snapshot of this region’s fascinating history – all set against dramatic landscapes.

To get a real taste of Al Gharbia’s authentic heritage, visit one of the many festivals throughout the year such as January’s

Tel Moreeb festival, the pinnacle hill climb event for desert driving enthusiasts; April’s Al Gharbia Watersports Festival, fast becoming a highlight on the international sporting calendar; July’s Liwa Date Festival, a showcase for this valued desert fruit; and January’s Al Dhafrah Camel Festival, which includes the world’s only camel beauty contest.

Speedboat Tours After all that heat and sand, why not take to the waves in one of the local Yellow Boat tours, the UAE’s first speedboat tours and a unique way to explore Abu Dhabi’s headline-grabbing new developments and stunning coastline. Offering guided tours of signature attractions such as the Corniche and Emirates Palace, it’s a front-row seat to some truly stunning vistas. Imagine arriving at Yas Marina Circuit, dining at the Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri or visiting the new Manarat Al Saadiyat exhibition centre on Saadiyat Island by boat!

Too little sleep has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, weight gain, heart disease and depression. Here’s how to grab, and hold onto those zzzzz’s

Hey Mr Sandman(Image source: Shutterstock)

Page 37: ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE IT'S OMAN

Experts suggest that most people need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night but that doesn’t apply to everyone. Some people only require six hours while those who are more active or have an illness may require more.

So how do you know if you are getting enough quality sleep? Those who are sleep deprived often look the part. Dark circles and the “sleepy” look are common, but they also can have unpredictable moods,

drowsiness during the day, have difficulty concentrating, weak immune systems,

recover poorly from injury and get sick more often. Sounding a

little too familiar?

In fact, poor sleep has been found to impair the ability to perform tasks involving memory, learning, and logical reasoning. There are several simple adjustments you can make to stack the cards in favour of a better night’s sleep.

Answer True or False1. Five hours of sleep at night is good enough.

2. It’s OK to skimp on sleep during the work week, as long as you make up the time over the weekends.

3. The effects of sleep deprivation are short-term (eg darkness under the eyes and dull and/or splotchy skin after a bad night’s sleep) and have no effect on long-term health.

4. Drinking caffeine early in the evening does not affect sleep.

5. Keeping a TV or computer in the bedroom has no effect on sleep.

6. The amount of sleep I get has nothing to do with my weight.

If you answered, “True” to two or more questions you may need to make a few changes to your lifestyle.

Avoid watching TV before bed The bed should be reserved for two things...sleep and romance...not Desperate Housewives or football! Research shows that those who experienced the most sleep disturbances had televisions in their bedrooms and used the TV to fall asleep.

Try a different pillow or mattress Do you wake with your back aching? Is there enough room for you and your sleep partner? Do you sleep better, or worse, when you sleep away from home? These are all things to ask yourself to determine if your mattress could be sabotaging your sleep. Replacing your pillow with a new, fresh, higher quality version could be all that you need.

Avoid caffeine late in the day Even a small amount of caffeine 10-12 hours before bedtime can cause problems falling asleep! Try eliminating the tea, soda and chocolate, and see if sleep improves.

Listen to relaxing music Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, such as listening to music, could be just the thing you need to signal your body it is time to sleep. So, dim the lights and throw some slow jazz or purchase a “relaxing sounds” CD to help slow your mind and body down for an evening of peaceful sleep.

Try mind- body techniques After an action-packed day, your brain and body need to unwind and detox before sleep can occur. Create a “ritual” for bedtime - take a bath, meditate, do some easy stretches or yoga. Try to do your “ritual” in the same way, in the same place, at the same time each night. The repetition will trigger your mind and body that it is time to relax and sleep.

Try a natural sleep aid For many people, while the above tips and suggestions may help, it often isn’t enough. If you are one of those people who really have a hard time getting to sleep and staying asleep, you may want to try a natural sleep aid.

While over the counter sleep medications may help you fall asleep, they cannot be taken long-term and have risky side effects. A sleep aid that uses natural ingredients is a better approach to getting a solid night’s sleep.

Walking into a room full of people, especially strangers, is daunting enough. But when your business depends on making new contacts it

can be terrifying! Here are some tips on the art of networking

Schmoozesavvy

Whether it’s a cocktail party, a business lunch, convention or a fundraiser or a reunion, most people are not mingling mavens. But our careers, businesses and social lives are enhanced by our ability to meet, mingle, schmooze, interact and make social and business connections.

Be sure to prepare1. A self-introduction. It’s NOT an elevator pitch.

It’s 7-9 seconds and is a pleasantry.

2. Our attitudes. Shift from wondering who you will meet to thinking about who you will be fortunate to “get to” meet.

3. Conversation. Read the paper on or off-line and have five items of potential conversation to fall back on, for example the latest movies, sports championship, community project or restaurant opening, etc.

4. Carry business cards. Make sure they are standard size and that the font is big enough to read. It’s a viable way to exchange information.

Before you enter the room, take a deep breath and observe. Where are the food, the bar, the gathering spots, and the trafficked areas? Do you see anyone you know who you should greet?

Name game Wear yours on the right-hand side. It’s the line of sight with the hand you extend for a handshake. That makes it easy for other people to read your nametag. As you extend your hand and introduce yourself, use the person’s name. That will also help you remember names. You can ask a question about

the company, location or indicate that you know someone at the company or are familiar with the products.

It’s been how long? If you haven’t seen people for a while, greet them with your name as you shake hands. They will generally respond in kind. Then no one has to struggle with forgotten names.

Shy secrets The person who is speaking to no one might welcome your conversation. Just because someone is standing alone doesn’t mean he or she is a snob or “unimportant”. People who are alone may be shyer than you.

Eyes front A smile and eye contact let people know you’re open to meeting them.

Page 42: ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE IT'S OMAN

How’s the weather What you have in common makes for ideal icebreakers: The venue, the food, the event, the theme, the sponsor or host.

Wingman Choose someone in a non-competitive field and cross-promote and introduce each other.

Exit strategy Extricating oneself gracefully from a conversation is a must. “Well it was great to talk to you about….” Summarise the main thrust of your chat. Move about one quarter of the room away. No sense in standing in the same area near the person you just left. Circulate around the room. Find another solo or join a group.

BONUS tip Leave your cellphones, iPhones, iPads whatever, leave them off! The message you give when you “work” a room with your Bluetooth attached to your ear, or continually check your smart phone is: “No one here is important enough to warrant my attention.” Not a great message to send out!

Remember, Acknowledge people who have given you time, leads, advice. Keep them “in the loop.”

Match-make people you know with job leads, contacts, prospects and referrals. It comes back.

Stay in touch with your network when you need nothing from it. That makes it easier to get in touch when we need help/advice/leads.

Follow Up with the people whose cards you collected. Send an email; invite them to be “linked-in”.

The author is a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. He takes us on a tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. The fast, intuitive, and emotional system, and the slower, more deliberative, logical system. Practical and enlightening insights into how we make decisions, in both our business and our personal lives, and how we can change the way we react to events by understanding how both systems in the mind work together.

Time Out8 life lessons from best-selling author of The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho

Aviation humour

It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary: Swimming in a pool, combing a beach for shells, playing a board game, or sharing a delicious meal - all simple things making up the best times we’ve had as a family.

Support your children: As a parent, it’s difficult to accept when your child wants to take a path other than the one you had hoped and planned for them. But, it’s ok. Like my wife keeps telling me “give them roots and give them wings”. Give them a solid foundation of love, but give them the freedom to fly.

There is nothing to hold you back, except yourself: There is only one question to ask yourself here: “What would you do if you were not afraid?” Think about it.

Trust your gut: Many times our subconscious has already made a decision before we’ve caught up and made the same decision. Sometimes we don’t make the same decision and then ‘something does not feel right’ or there is a persistent nagging that bothers us. Trust your gut – it may be more accurate than you think.

On a small commuter flight one sunny day, the captain was told that his passengers were nervous about being on a small airplane. He decided to take action: “Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain. I have been informed that some of you are nervous about being on a ‘little’ plane. Well, let me assure you, there is nothing to worry about, just sit back and take it easy. It might be helpful to do some sight-seeing to put your mind at ease. Now, if you’ll all lean and look out over the right wing of the airplane....it’ll tip over! Hahahahaha!! Just a little pilot humor...”

The following is excerpted from an actual complaint letter from a doctor to a major airline: “We were booked on Flight 371 to leave at 5:15 p.m. At about 4:45 p.m., when the luggage was about to be loaded, the ground crew noticed the plane had a flat tire. We were told there would be about a one-hour delay. After 30 minutes or so, we were told the plane did not have a spare tire. This is inexusable!!!! Every car in America carries a spare tire. There is NO EXCUSE for a plane not to carry a spare tire!” Company personnel responding to the complaint were diplomatic enough not to mention the lack of a rear-view mirror as well!

In an attempt to keep the passengers from standing or moving around before taxiing was completed, the purser of a SouthWest flight said over the PA: “Ladies and Gentlemen. Our pilots fly much better than they drive so please

Follow your dreams: There are many of us who dream our dreams without ever actually realizing any of them. We analyse too much and our dreams turn into giant mountains in our imagination that seem impossible to climb. As a result, we never learned that foreign language we’ve always wanted to learn, or traveled, or started that business, or written that book.

Know what you want: Set goals and make a plan to achieve them. It’s like the saying, “A goal that is never written down is nothing but a New Year’s resolution” – and we all know what happens to New Year’s resolutions.

Make a decision and act: The river of life will take you to places that you have never imagined. Once you make a decision, take action. You’ll be surprised to find where it will lead.

Always look forward: It’s ok to look back once and a while, but don’t live in the past. You can visit “pity city” for a short time, but after a while you have to leave it all behind and walk on.

remain seated until the captain finishes taxiing and brings the aircraft to a complete stop at the terminal...”

A single ticket agent was booking a long line of travelers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, “I have to be on this flight and it has to be first class.” The agent replied, “I’ll be happy to try to help you, but I’ve got to help these folks first, and I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.” The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, “Do you have any idea who I am?” Without hesitating, the gate agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone. “May I have your attention please?” she began, her voice bellowing throughout the terminal. “We have a passenger here at the gate who does not who he is. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to the gate.” The angry man retreated and went to the back of the queue!

Mountain bikingThe biking bug has bitten Oman! Not only is this sport a great way to keep fit, but you also get to enjoy Oman’s stunning scenery and the friendliness of the local people. Whether you are looking for tarred roads, fast cross-country, short steep climbs, or rough roads, there is something for you. If you are in town, try out the easy route opposite Muscat Private Hospital. There are a lot of good single tracks and you will end up in old Bousher village.

Mountain climbingThere are several areas including paved paths for beginners and rugged cliff faces for the more experienced climber. Wadi Ghool in A’Sharqiyah South Governorate, which rises to 300m, provides an ideal spot for climbing. Jabal Misht is a superb location for mountain climbing with its rocky front, perhaps the largest in the Arabian Peninsula. Its south-east front extends for approximately 6km, rising up to 850m, providing trails of all levels of difficulty. Musandam is also famous for its many mountains. If you are in Muscat, there are hills of various heights for climbing, whether you are a beginner or a professional.

Coffee with a viewA popular place to have a coffee is on Muttrah Corniche, where you can sit and watch the hustle and bustle in the harbour area. Another great place is the stretch of public beach in Shatti al Qurum. Whether you want urban trendy, or laid-back casual, visit this website for some ideas! www.omanicuisine.com

Take 4Whether you are in Oman for one day, one week or one month, make sure you find the time to fit in these fun-filled excursions

Parks and GardensMuscat has surprisingly green lungs, considering its geographical location. You will be surprised by the rich green hues and elaborate floral displays of the parks. Most of the Muscat parks have free entry. You will also find small snack shops or drink stands near these parks. The capital boasts several lovely gardens, such as Qurum Natural Park, Riyam and Al Naseem, all of which are suitable for families or for the individual wanting some solitude.

Oman Air Reveals Its Annual Financial Report For 2011

Oman Air has recently published its annual report for 2011 that reflects the accomplishments achieved by the company, in addition to the outstanding efforts and the successful approach towards the development of all aspects of its operations in order to continue the company’s growth and successes. Oman Air’s business operations have witnessed remarkable growth during 2011.Reviewing the annual

report on behalf of the Board of Directors of Oman Air during The Extraordinary General Meeting and The 30th Ordinary General meeting in Muscat, H.E. Darwish bin Ismail bin Ali Al Balushi, The Minister Responsible for Financial Affairs, Chairman of Oman Air’s Board of Directors, highlighted some of the achievements of 2011, which are as follows:

• Increaseofrevenueby35%• Increaseinthenumberofpassengersto3.8million,or16%• Increaseintheseatfactorupto73%• Increaseoffreightrevenuesby28%• ThejoiningoftwoE175regionaljetaircraft• CodeshareagreementwithBritishMidlandInternational• Additionoftwonewdestinations

A year of expansion and transformationH.E. Darwish bin Ismail Al Balushi said:“2011 was a year of both change and consolidation for Oman Air. We have continued our programme of rapid expansion, introduced new aircraft and further enhanced the quality of our products and services. We have also invested in training, agreed a number of partnerships and joint ventures and taken a series of measures to improve efficiency. Each of these steps has been taken with two key aims in mind: to ensure the best possible passenger experience for our customers and to improve profitability in the long run.”

Significant operational resultsThe results speak for themselves. The number of passengers carried by Oman Air increased by 16 per cent in 2011, against a global increase in demand of just 5.9 per cent, and despite our increased capacity, seat factors increased by 0.5 per cent to 72.7 per cent. We also served over half a million more meals than in the previous

year, a 13 per cent increase. Being the service provider in Muscat International Airport, Oman Air handled 6.5 million passengers along with 34,555 flights. There was also an increase in the number of Oman Air flights carried out in 2011 bringing it to 17,780 round trips.

Achievements reflect high standardsHowever, our A330 fleet is by no means ‘old news’ and, despite being operational for more than two years now, our aircraft continue to attract acclaim. In June, Oman Air’s A330 Business Class seat was named as the Best in the World by Skytrax, the renowned airline quality specialists, who also designated Oman Air as an Official Four Star Airline, following a thorough audit of all aspects of the business. In addition, we also opened stunning new First Class and Business Class lounges at Muscat International Airport – where our First Class passengers can now enjoy a luxurious new lounge-to-aircraft chauffeured limousine service. These elegant and relaxing spaces were extremely well received by our customers and provided a template for the launch of our new Business Class lounge in Bangkok, where travellers to and from South East Asia can now enjoy a taste of Oman’s legendary hospitality.

New destinationsNew services to Zurich and Zanzibar mean that customers from these valuable new markets can also enjoy Oman Air’s hospitality, whilst our new service from Salalah to Dubai, together with increased frequencies within the Gulf region offer even greater choice and convenience. To provide choice, convenience and value to its valued customers, Oman Air entered into strategic partnerships and ensured that Oman Air Holidays is the leading operator for holidays in Oman and across its international network and anticipates that this increasingly important part of its business goes from strength to strength.

The success story continuesThe success of our passenger services is mirrored by that of our cargo business, where Oman Air has again flown in the face of international trends by increasing the tonnage we carried by 13%. As a result, cargo revenues increased by RO 4.1 Million, providing an important contribution to our financial results. Our cargo operations were also enhanced by the launch in 2011 of new pan-GCC and pan-European

Oman Air turns off lights for Earth Hour 2012Lights went out across Oman Air’s headquarters in Muscat, as well as across its network destinations, as the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman marks Earth Hour at 8.30pm (local time) on Saturday March 31st.

The airline had been joined by tens of thousands of organizations and hundreds of millions of people around the world to mark Earth Hour by turning off lights for one hour to highlight the importance of tackling climate change.

Oman Air’s Headquarters in Muscat has taken the lead on behalf of the airline, and has been joined by its offices in Europe, the Middle East, South and South East Asia and Africa. In addition, many of Oman Air’s partners have participated in the initiative.

Earth Hour was launched in 2007 by international campaigning organisation WWF. Since then, the initiative has captured the imagination of people around the world and, last year, 5200 cities in 135 countries took part, turning lights off and encouraging continuing efforts to reduce energy consumption.

Climate change and energy saving are amongst the greatest challenges facing the modern world and minimising energy use in all areas of lives is vital. Oman Air, as a responsible corporate citizen, is committed to highlighting the importance of tackling climate change, and to encouraging as many people as possible to take part in Earth Hour, right across its network. To that end, Oman Air had also asked its staff to take part at home by switching off their lights for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday.

trucking services and a new partnership with the Port of Salalah which is resulting in new opportunities to develop the Sultanate of Oman’s European freight transport market.

Our investment in our people has seen IATA recognise our high training standards by naming Oman Air as a Middle East 2011 Top Ten Authorized Training Centre, and our catering staff have achieved CIEH food safety accreditation. Oman Air was also awarded ISO accreditation for our supply chain management and our airport lounges in Muscat, whilst the opening of our new, state-of-the-art Emergency Response Centre provides world-class facilities and builds on the Emergency Response Planning training that we undertook earlier in the year.

Oman Air’s remarkable achievements over the last 12 months would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of staff at all levels of the company and I would like to express the Board of Directors’ gratitude for the invaluable contributions that have helped to make Oman Air the world class airline it is today. Our increased investment in staff training and career development are paying dividends and we were pleased to recognise the commitment of many of our staff through enhanced remuneration packages.

LEGENDS We lost another music legend earlier this year, the late great Whitney Houston. She left a legacy of hits and achievements during her rein as arguably the greatest vocalist alive. We showcase her biography and hits on the radio show, Featured Artist, with her albums; I Look To You and The Essential this month on Oman Air. We’ve also rounded up some albums from music legends that have left us. Do check out their musical brilliance.
