Beware of Poppy Seeds!

kg

T he following Near Miss was reported by Train-ing Officer Capt. Leonid Fedchishak during a recent attendance on board a ship of the

Fleet.

But can poppy seeds really cause a positive test? It might seem unlikely that eating a few slices of poppy seed cake or a couple of bagels with a poppy seed topping could be enough to make a non-drug user get red flagged in a drug test. But in fact it’s well documented that eating poppy seeds, which are commonly

used in muffins, bread and bagels, can be enough to trigger a positive reading for the opiate morphine. While poppy seeds don’t actually contain morphine, the seeds can become coated by, or absorb, opium extract during harvesting. Opium is the milky sub-stance that is extracted along with the poppy seeds from the seed pod of the opium poppy after all the petals have fallen off. It’s not an urban myth; it’s a scientific fact! On its website, the government-owned Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) confirms that morphine can be present in a urine sample when poppy seeds have been consumed, but it says

Photo of the poppy seeds found on board.

“During a safety inspection by the Training Officer, 2 cans of Poppy Seeds were found in the Galley Dry provision store, which was

intended for cooking.

Consumption of poppy seeds can lead to positive result during a Drug Test.” they would usually have to be eaten within 12 to

24 hours of the sample being collected. Because poppy seeds come from the seed pods of opium plants, they can be contaminated with opium milk, which contains morphine. Before they’re used as an ingredient in baking, the seeds are cleaned and processed but are still likely to contain traces of opiate residue. It’s not a high enough concentration for someone to feel any morphine-like effects, but it can be enough to cause a positive result on a sensitive test. Can the morphine from poppy seeds be detected in a sample? Research shows that morphine and codeine can sometimes be detected in the urine up to 48 hours after ingestion of poppy seeds from some pastries, such as bagels, muffins, and cakes. Even though most of the opium is removed from the poppy seeds during processing (usually more than 90%), in some cases, the seeds sold for use in foods still have a significant amount of opium – and thus morphine – on them. Conclusion: It is best to avoid eat-ing poppy seeds, as they can get you into trouble by resulting in a positive Drug Test Result for opiates!

A s you already know, the amendments to MAR-POL Annex V that were adopted at MEPC 70 entered into force on 1 March 2018. A sum-

mary of the new regulations can be found below:

Declaration of cargo residues Cargo residues which are not harmful to the marine environment have less strict discharge requirements than cargo residues which are harmful. Solid bulk car-go, other than grain, shall now be classified per the criteria in the new appendix I of MARPOL Annex V, and the shipper shall then declare as to whether or not the cargo is harmful to the environment (HME).

New Format Garbage Record Book A new form of the Garbage Record Book (GRB) has been included in appendix II to MARPOL Annex V. The GRB will be divided into two parts: Part I for all garbage other than cargo residues, appli-cable to all ships Part II for cargo residues only applicable to ships carry-ing solid bulk cargo The GRB garbage catego-ries have also been amend-ed to include e-waste, and the category for cargo resi-dues has been split into HME (harmful to the marine envi-ronment) and non-HME. The new garbage category distribution will be as fol-lows: A.Plastics B. Food waste C. Domestic wastes D. Cooking oil E. Incinerator ashes F. Operational waste G. Animal carcasses H. Fishing gear I. E-waste J. Cargo residues (non-HME) K. Cargo residues (HME)

Amendments to MARPOL Annex V - Garbage

Environment

The GRB discharge table has also been revised, as both incineration start and stop date/time/position shall be recorded. In addition, a new ta-ble is included for reporting exceptional dis-charge or loss of garbage under regulation 7, al-so covering the reason for the discharge or loss, details thereof and precautions taken.

The new GRB part II for solid bulk cargo residues includes entries for position or port, garbage cat-egory (J or K), amount discharged to sea or re-ception facilities, and start and stop positions for sea discharge. Along with the GRB, receipts obtained from re-ceptions facilities will also be required to be kept on board for at least two years. Even though Annex V of MARPOL is mandatory for all ships, there are neither certification nor ap-proval requirements.

However, the following is required under MAR-POL:

Placards posted on board noting the discharge require-ments) A Garbage Management Plan) A Garbage Record Book) What to do: Familiarize yourselves with the new requirements and make sure that the new for-mat Garbage Record Book that has been provided by the Company is in use on board. Furthermore, placards and Garbage Management Plans should be replaced as necessary to satisfy the amendments to MARPOL Annex V. Source: dnv-gl kg

Charging your Phone on the Bridge? Think Again!

W hat might happen? It’s the middle of the night, your phone is running flat,

and there is a handy USB port on the EC-DIS. You are not going to download any-thing, so what’s the harm in plugging it in to charge? More than you might think! If software on the phone is in need of up-date, that could potentially override the ECDIS display to show the dialogue box. It might not be malware – but it’s still in the middle of the screen, obstructing the chart. Or it might cause the display to switch to displaying the underlying Win-dows or Linux system screen. Again, even if no damage has taken place – you still don’t have an ECDIS display! Worst case scenario? Evidence has shown that difficulties in updating ECDIS charts and licenses rose as a result of charging phones or using unauthorized USB. It can be certain that

this is a po-tential vector for computer viruses or malware.

What must be done? The Captain and bridge team Officers need to allocate where these devices might be charged. Remember: Seafarers don’t need to be an IT security expert to grasp the fundamentals of cyber risk, and the right measures can be introduced and applied fairly easily, by being sensible, aware and thinking about what can go wrong, then cyber security measures can be introduced at sea.

“Noise” Safety Talk

sz

Our hearing is precious to us. Once we diminish or lose our hearing we can never fully recover it. There has been concern for some time over the levels of noise to which seafarers are exposed on a day to day basis whilst onboard.

Some areas of a ship will inevitably be louder than others – contrast noise levels in the engine room with say, that of the bridge and so the need for some form of ear protection for the crew in the engineering spaces is obvious.

Administrative controls such as training on using hearing protection, job rotation, breaks, and routine maintenance programs are some ways that protect workers from being exposed to hazardous noise. PPE is the last line of defense. For noises between 85 decibels and 100 decibels on an 8 hour TWA(Time Weighted Average), ear plugs will be enough to protect you if worn correctly. Over 100 decibels then double hearing protection is needed, an example is earplugs and ear muffs. Where the noise level in machinery spaces (or other spaces) is greater than 85 dB(A), entrances to such spaces shall carry a warning notice comprising symbol and supplementary sign in the working language of the ship. A good rule of thumb to determine if a noise is too loud is the 3-foot rule. If you are standing 3 feet from someone and must shout to be heard, the noise level is probably over the 85 db(A). Signs at the entrance to noisy rooms:

80-85 dB(A): HIGH-NOISE LEVEL – USE HEARING PROTECTORS 85-110 dB(A): DANGEROUS NOISE – USE OF HEARING PROTECTORS MANDATORY 110-115 dB(A): CAUTION: DANGEROUS NOISE – USE OF HEARING PROTECTORS MANDATORY – NO

LONGER THAN 15 MINUTES >115 dB(A) CAUTION: EXCESSIVELY HIGH-NOISE LEVEL – USE OF HEARING PROTECTORS MANDATORY

– NO STAY LONGER THAN 10 MINUTES

Russia tells EU gas supplies via Ukraine under no immediate threat

MOSCOW/KIEV-3 Mar. (Reuters) - Russia’s Energy Ministry said on Saturday that gas giant Gazprom’s intention to terminate contracts with Ukraine poses no immediate threat to natural gas supplies to Eu-rope through Ukraine. The issue of gas transit has intensified after the Rus-sian group said on Friday it would end the contracts after a Stockholm arbitration court ordered it to pay more than $2.5 billion (£1.8 billion) to Ukrainian energy firm Naftogaz.

Porsche unveils its insanely fast Tesla Model X rival

Porsche continues to target Tesla. After taking a swipe at the Model S, X and 3 maker last week, the German automaker just surprised us in Geneva with the Mission E Cross Turismo SUV (even though Por-sche calls it a CUV, a cross utility vehicle). Watch out Model X. While we don't know much about the crossover, Porsche did say it is investigating putting the car into production. Considering that the SUV and crossover market continues to grow, don't be surprised to see this vehicle in showrooms right after the Mission E hits the road. With two electric motors, the all-wheel-drive, 600 horsepower vehicle will go from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in less than 3.5 seconds.

It’s so cold in Amsterdam people are ice skat-ing on the canals

The freezing conditions griping Europe have pro-duced one unexpected upside: parts of Amster-dam’s canals have frozen over, allowing locals to ice skate on the waterways. For the first time in about six years, part of the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals froze hard enough to support the weight of dozens of sightseers, locals and ice skaters. Footage from the canals shows people on skates criss-crossing the ice while others stroll along enjoying the novelty of walking on what is normally flowing water.

Oscars 2018: NBA legend Kobe Bryant wins prize for best short animated film

NBA legend Kobe Bryant won the Oscar for best short animated film in Sunday's award ceremony in Los Angeles. The six-time NBA championship winner was recognized for Dear Basketball, a five-minute film based on a love letter to the sport he had written in 2015. When Bryant ended his career in 2016, the LA Lakers retired the two jerseys he wore during his 20-year spell. In accepting his award, the 39-year-old spoke in defense of athletes' influence on cultural and political life. He said: "As basketball players, we're really supposed to shut up and dribble. But I'm glad we do a little bit more than that "Thank you, Academy, for this amazing honor."

Pyeongchang (CNN) The 2018 Winter Olympic Games that were held be-tween 9 and 25 February 2018 at Pyeongchang South Korea, mixed sport and politics in equal measure.

Preceded by months of mounting tension between North and South Korea and the US, the Games end-ed with a softening of relations between the two Ko-rean countries, who competed under a united flag. The spectacular closing ceremony once again saw athletes from North and South Korea marching to-gether.

As well as politicians and Olympic organizers having to navigate the complex relationship between North and South Korea, the issue of Russian doping over-shadowed PyeongChang 2018.

c o n t i n u e d f r o m p a g e 1 7 One hundred and sixty eight Russian athletes com-peted for the Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) team under a neutral flag, provided they could prove there were clean. Norway topped the medals table with a total of 39 medals.
