Dear Faith Family,
Happy New Year! I hope you all were able to end the old year with great joy.
In this week’s Gospel, we hear the story of the shepherds encountering the Christ child.Though the shepherds being able to meet the Holy Family is quite remarkable, the beautyof the story lays within the response of the shepherds.
Earlier in the Gospel, the shepherds were approached by an angel who revealed to themthat, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, theLord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in amanger.” When they first heard of the newborn savior, they couldn’t help but yearn toencounter him, and after they had their encounter, they could not help but spread the wordof the joyous occasion.
This new year, like every new year, we concern ourselves with New Year’s Resolutions. Itis no secret that we tend to create good resolutions that involve a healthier lifestyle andmore time with loved ones, and this is always a good practice. But why don’t we add aspiritual resolution to our list? Why not commit to resolution of increased discipleship inour lives?
If we look at our Parish Mission, we have encouraged a culture of “Encountering Jesus andBeing Disciples.” If the shepherds in the gospel were Padre Serra parishioners, they wouldbe excelling in this mantra. Not only did they encounter Christ, but because of theencounter, they were compelled to share their experience with others. This, my friends, isprime example of discipleship.
So this year, friends, I invite us not only to live healthier lives or to spend more time withfamily, but I also propose that we actively pursue a strengthened life of discipleship. Wehave all encountered Jesus in our lives; let’s resolve to practice to share our encounter withthe world more effectively.
Happy New Year!

Cellphone Apps Allow for Hiding Photos and MessagesA review of a young person’s cellphone text messages may provide aparent or caring adult with information such as who your child talksto, where they are going, and what they’re doing. Unfortunately, allof that may be in the past. Today, some new cellphone textmessaging services keep cellphone texting activity increasinglyprivate. In order to protect young people, one must stay current andreconnect with everchanging technology.
