• 17,929 casualties

• Featured the first major opposed river crossing in American military history

• The Civil Wars first urban conflict

• With 200,000 soldiers no other Civil War battle featured a larger concentration of troops

Harriet Tubman• Born 1820 in Dorchester County Maryland• Nickname “Moses”• Escaped slavery in 1849 • Harriet was an American slave who escaped from slavery in the south and became the leading abolitionist before the civil war. After escaping slavery she returned to the South to help family members and non-relatives escape to the North.

Abraham Lincoln• Born February 12, 1809- Died April 15, 1865• President Lincoln is best known for being the 16th president of the United States.• He preserved the Union during the Civil War and brought about the Emancipation of slavery. • President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Fords theatre in Washington D.C.• Fun fact: Lincolns cabinet coined the term “hold your friends close and your enemies closer.”

Sitting Bull• Born 1831 in Grand River- Died December 15, 1890 at Standing Rock Indian Reservation• Sitting Bull was the Native American chief of the Sioux Tribe. • Sitting Bull is best know for the defeat of Federal Troops under George Custer in the battle of Little Big Horn.
