Walid Nagy, Deputy CEO, Land Bank, Jordan, envisions a transformation of the banking industry 30 years from now that will be devoid of commercial banks and no time value of money (zero or negative interest if no risk is taken). In this new world, according to Nagy, central banks will keep the individuals and the corporate balances, in addition to also carrying the biometric data for people while managing and availing it for verifications. Subsequently, payment service providers, funding collaborators and credit agencies (facilitating payments, funding and lending activities) will emerge.

“I do have many ideas, one of which is about a global asset-backed virtual currency, where instead of having a virtual currency that has no real value behind it, one could have an Asset Backed Currency (ABC) that has real value behind it,” Nagy says. “And if the real assets are from different countries, then it becomes a Global ABC.”

These are just a couple of the theories the 2014 GSB graduate, whose broad banking and business career, which has included work in eight countries and four industries covering retail banking, financial services, business development, payments, innovation, and sales management has developed.

To determine if Nagy’s futuristic mindset led to him heading business lines of profit centers and distribution channels for a staff of up to 1,000 and revenues of $100M– or if it was the other way around – would be akin to asking the ancient paradox: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Nagy began his career as a consumer risk officer in 2002 after completing his MBA and CFA-1. In this role, he oversaw verifications, collections, account fulfillment, fraud management and risk policy. This career start on the risk side of banking proved to be an asset as he later moved to the business side between 2003 and 2009. He credits the risk management background in helping him make solid risk aware business decisions.

In 2012, armed with 12 years of banking experience and a desire to expand his practical knowledge in all the banking areas beyond his consumer banking focus, Nagy enrolled in GSB.

“Although I didn’t anyone who had attended GSB before, when I read about it and went through the topics, I knew that it would

add great value to my banking experience,” he says. “And when I looked up GSB and found that it is one of the top schools in the U.S., it was a no brainer to apply.”

GSB also appealed to Nagy because he desired to learn more about the American banking industry and its norms. “Banking in the U.S. is different from almost everywhere else, as most of the world has a very limited number of banks,” he says. “Canada has fewer than 10 banks, and all the European and Asian countries are like that. Only in the U.S. can you find community banks and credit unions in thousands. This gives you a totally different perspective on how running a whole bank operation could be simple and not as complex as many around the world would assume.”

Not only did Nagy get a comprehensive, birds-eye view of how efficiently bank operations could be, he was able to test it directly through the FiSim bank management simulation. This is GSB’s capstone course in which students combine the cumulative knowledge learned all three summers to experience the challenge of managing a bank using their bank’s data. This was one of the highlights of the program for Nagy who, at the time, was with the National Bank of Egypt–the largest in Egypt. After graduation, he also implemented the 13-month CD special, which he applied at the Abu Dhabi Bank in Egypt, and many of the sales management tools in his branches and with his sales teams at the Bank of Kuwait, Egypt, where he was employed prior to his current position.

In addition to the educational experience, Nagy recalls what he describes as amazing summers taking in the view of Lake Monona from UW-Madison’s Union Terrace, strolling State Street– the main shopping, arts and entertainment district on campus–and the camaraderie with his fellow bankers.

“I made some good friends that I am still in touch with today,” he says. “We refer to each other a lot and do help each other in many cases.”

Recreationally, Nagy enjoys meeting with friends; spending time with his wife of 17 years, Marwa, and daughters Habiba, 13, and Salma, 16; and attending to his garden. He particularly revels in working on his home which began as a concrete shell and, under his supervision, became the beautiful home he and his family cherish today. n

The Association of Military Banks of America (AMBA) has established a scholarship to the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to honor Raleigh A. “Andy” Trovillion. Trovillion, a long-time former GSB faculty member and Association of Military Banks of America (AMBA) board chairman, passed away in 2019 after a distinguished career in banking.

“AMBA is honored to sponsor this scholarship that combines Andy’s passions for banking and support of our nation’s military. As a long-time AMBA director and past chairman, he energized us to do what we could to ensure military families received the financial education, products, and services they earned through their service and sacrifice. We miss him dearly and believe he would be humbled by this legacy. Through this scholarship in his name, we hope to enable and inspire future generations of veterans and military spouses who have chosen banking as their profession to continue Andy’s work,” commented Maj.
