Latin America is a region that mostly depends uponhydropower as a primary sourceRelative lacks of industrialization and technology

US policy as one of the critical uncertainties for the region. Theelection of Donald Trump as President of the United Statesbrings a lot of uncertainty to Latin America

Extreme weather events represent a critical uncertainty for Latin America, much more than for any other region.Ex. El Niño affects Colombia, Venezuela and EcuadorAnd manifests itself as droughts north of the equator but as rains in the south

Primary energy supply

The region is endowed with vast energy resources, both fossiland renewables.

Bioenergy for power and onshore wind are the twotechnologies whose capacity has grown the most in absoluteterms since 2000.

ParaguayPanamaUruguay Costa Ricamainly hydropower

Mexico, Bolivia and Chile natural gas and oil

Hydropower remains the most important source of renewable energy, but its importance is slowly declining.

Energy consumption

Transport: Lack of technology in public transportationEx: Bogota and Quito have no metro(start one month ago).

Renewable energies

Central America and Caribbean is the last generator of renewable energies

Renewable energies

Brazil is one of the biggest producers of oil in Latin Americaand ranks third worldwide in hydroelectricity generation.

Latin America vs world

20/11/2018 ENR 810 É i l bl 16

Latin America vs world

From 2013, Latin America increased the technology content in the electricity.Non-hydro renewable energy sources are picking up as a result of competition driving down the average price per MWh

Latin America Issues

Latin America against corruption.Up to 2050, there could be a lack of water to provide energy. This is going to be the major energy issue in power generation in Latin America

The countries of CentralAmerica will have a safertransmission system that alsooffers advantages such asreducing the average cost ofgeneration

Conclusion

• Nowadays, hydropower is the key source of renewable energy, butits importance is slowly declining due to environmental factors.

• The lack of constraining and penalizing measures for non-compliance to legislations in several Latin American countries is apreponderant barrier to the advancement of renewable energy.

• Latin America has begun, therefore, to rethink its energy mix. Theopportunity is at hand to boost energy security, fuel economicgrowth in a sustainable manner, and drive economic developmentfor future generations.
