There were three major ways Enlightenment ideas were spread through Europe……

Salon

• The idea originated in France as a place where people could meet and exchange ideas

• Individuals would attend these gatherings at the home of a wealthy citizen.

• Topics of conversation could involve politics, social philosophies, art, etc.

Encyclopedie

-Edited by Denis Diderot, this was a collection of Enlightenment Thinker’s works-Books that included everything known to man

about science, technology, history, and the ideas of the Enlightenment.

-Criticized the Church and government, and praised religious tolerance

-Catholic Church banned it

Printing Press

-Invented by Johannes Gutenberg

-Allowed for the mass spreading of ideas through pamphlets, newspapers, books

-quicker, more affordable, more people were able to be exposed to the printed word
