Enjoy your PIE!Author’s Purpose
Primary ReadingCCS R 1.RL.5 Explain major differences between books that tell stories and books that give information.
Complete a focus lesson with students, using the anchor charts, before using this activity in stations. Use the acronym P.I.E to help students learn the different reasons why authors write something (to persuade, to inform, to entertain).

STATION TASK CARD Unit 1 2 3 4 _________ Station Activity Name: Make a PIE Standard: Reading for Literature/Text Types and Purposes Skill/Objective: (COPY IN YOUR PASSPORT) Author’s Purpose Directions: 1. Take a paper plate and using a ruler, divide it into 4 equal parts. See the example made by the teacher. 2. Label the first slice “Author’s Purpose.” Label the 2nd slice,
“Persuade”. The 3rd slice will be “Inform” and the 4th “Entertain.” 3. Cut the pie apart so you have 4 equal pieces. 4. Now take a 2nd paper plate and staple each piece onto the new plate. Fold each piece back, one at a time, and record the definition of each part on the clean paper plate below. You should now have a foldable to help you practice with Author’s Purpose.

Use your paper plate PIE foldable to help you for this activity. 2. Take turns choosing a PIE card with a picture on it. The tallest person will go first. 3. Decide what the author’s purpose was in writing this text. Choose from:
To Persuade • To Inform • To Entertain 4. Tell which purpose you think for the card you’ve chosen. The student to your left will check your answer on the Answer Key. 5. When you have gone through all of the cards together, choose some books from your classroom to sort using your PIE foldables.
