resume his $28 million contract

with the Yankees. At 38,

Rodriguez is all but finished as

a major leaguer. He probably

figures this will be his last

chance to collect some money.

Oddly enough, the medical

community is still conflicted

about whether “human growth

hormones” and testosterone

are really “performance

enhancing drugs.” Most ath-

letes take them in an effort to

recover from injury and there

is apparently no substantial

research on their impact on

actual performance…

…The Johnny Manziel story is

perhaps only surprising

because of the timeline

involved. In less than a year,

“Johnny Football” has gone

from being an unheard-of

freshman quarterback at Texas

A&M… to a Heisman Trophy

winner… to college football’s

most notorious bad boy.

Manziel’s most recent scandal

involves claims that he was

paid to sign memorabilia. One

“autograph broker” claims he

paid Manziel $7,500 for one

signing session. Sorry, Mr.

Football, the NCAA doesn’t

allow college athletes to profit

from their own fame. Only

their universities, the NCAA,

college football sponsors, and

the bowl game organizers are

allowed to do that. Manziel

also got some negative publici-

ty when he was dismissed from

the Manning Passing Academy

(an elite prep quarterback

camp hosted by Peyton and Eli)

for “oversleeping” and missing

a morning’s worth of sessions.

Unconfirmed reports say that

Manziel had a hangover.

Campers pay between $400-

$600 per day for the camp…

…The Rodriguez and Manziel

storylines pale in comparison

to the ongoing story of Aaron

Hernandez. The now-former

Patriots tight end has been

arrested in connection with at

least one murder. His case is

still developing, but things

don’t look good for

Hernandez…

…If there’s a pattern in these

and other scandals involving

high-profile athletes it’s the

ongoing and sad fact that they

all seem to think that society’s

rules and laws just don’t apply

to them. People put them on a

pedestal because of their ath-

letic abilities. Rules and laws

must look pretty small from up

there. And the undeniable fact

is that big-time athletes get

away with a whole lot more

than they ever get caught

doing. Who knows how many

violations and crimes get

swept under the carpet

because of the perpetrators’

elite status? It’s a poor reflec-

tion on humanity when grown

adults have pro and college

jocks as their heroes. Perhaps

they’re no better or worse than

the rest of us. But when they

get knocked off of their

pedestals, the fall is a long

one… and a public one…

- Mark Bedford

I gave up being surprised by

“sports scandals” long ago.

Well, mostly. When Alex

Rodgriguez and 12 other Major

League Baseball players

received suspensions for their

involvement with the pseudo-

medical “anti-aging” clinic

Biogenesis, I wasn’t that sur-

prised. A-Rod was suspended

for the remainder of this sea-

son and all of 2014. The other

dozen players got 50-game sus-

pensions…

…I was, however, a bit sur-

prised when Rodriguez filed an

appeal and wound up in the

Yankees’ starting lineup this

past Monday night. There had

been rumors of a lifetime ban

for the former Hall of Fame

shoo-in. Everyone figured that

MLB had enough evidence on

him to support such a ban.

There had to be a reason why

his ban was over four times

higher than that of the other 12,

right? Appealing the MLB deci-

sion allowed A-Rod to at least

delay his suspension and

We've all heard the quote; "Adonkey is a horse created by acommittee," and we've alsoheard in the media how our gov-ernment has found a way tospend 10s of millions of dollarson pet projects; "buildingbridges to nowhere," forinstance. Still, one of the mostdisturbing of all such projects I'dsay happens to be out here inCalifornia, where our faithfulpoliticians and podium pushershave convinced at least 1/2 of allCalifornians that we need a high-speed train to move people fromLos Angeles to Sacramento toSan Francisco.

The first phase of this projectwill spend 10s of billions of dol-lars that the great State ofCalifornia doesn't have to build ahigh-speed rail system to basi-

cally nowhere. But one has toask why? Will anyone ride on it?No, and even those who might, probably will not afford theprice it will cost when the priceis amortized and rates and ridefees are set. Is this the height ofarrogance, are we witnessing inCalifornia the belief that moneygrows on olive trees and there isan endless flow - are we any bet-ter than the Romans in our deca-dence? One could very well askthese questions, and philosophi-cally say; yes, we are (can).

Have you ever considered whyFlorida decided not to put inhigh-speed rail? Well, it didn'tmake sense for them, and realizetheir land is flat and putting in ahigh-speed rail is relatively easycomparatively speaking to themountainous terrain of

California where enormous tun-nels will need to be built -through Earthquake faults in fact- scary stuff. But alas, that's theleast of the state's problems -you see we are in a huge debtsituation and everything they'vedone hasn't slowed the bleeding. No, we are not any differenthere than let's say Chicago,Detroit, or any of the other debtridden cities or states, but con-sidering that we are one withthat deficit problem why wastemoney on a train to nowhere?

Some of the utopia builders saythat we should do it to prove wecan, like putting a man on themoon, and they say; "just thinkhow great it will be to say thatCalifornia has one of the fastesttrains on Earth!" Yes, I suppose

that would be nice, and I sup-pose many egos were enlargedwith Dubai's tallest building orBeijing being the largest city. Butlook where it got them; you can'tbreathe the air in Beijing andDubai's big buildings don't havea sewer system to back them up- and both cities have debtissues, and problems.

Personally, I'd say that whereas,it might be nice to say we havethe fastest train, wouldn't bebetter to say we had thestrongest financial system, thebest education, and the besteconomy? Or am I just expectingtoo much from a socialist state? Please consider all this andthink on it.

however, it is a volatile commod-

ity. If you can't stomach market

swings, avoid gold. If you have

enough tolerance, you should

still limit your exposure. Don't

invest any more than a small

percentage of your overall port-

folio in gold. It should be no

more than five percent.

Before investing in gold, you

should establish a few goals.

Gold can, for instance, be a good

way to keep your savings from

being impacted by inflation, but

its value can also be volatile.

Decide ahead of time how much

you will invest and what goals

you have, and you are more like-

ly to make a profit.

Gold has gained in popularity

and importance as a result of the

worldwide economic downturn.

Being educated in this area

allows you to use gold in order

to protect your financial portfo-

lio. Put these tips to use before

you decide how to invest your

money.

- Abdul Qadir Shafi

Be certain to review the sales

contract carefully. If you're using

a mail-in gold program, read all

the fine print prior to commit-

ting to the deal. This lets you

know how much you end up with

after any fees are taken off the

top.

You don't have to have gold in

hand in order to invest it. You

might invest in an ETF or an indi-

vidual gold mining stock when

buying gold stocks. Purchasing

gold bars and coins means you

must have a secure place to store

them.

You can sell gold by sending it in

the mail. Although this process

may be easier, you may not earn

as much money. You simply drop

your jewelry items in a prepaid

envelope and wait for your

check to come in the mail. The

price they pay will be very low,

though. Keep in mind that you

could be looking at a return of

30% less than other options.

You can make money on gold;

Nearly everyone is looking to

gold right now to help them out

of a financial jam, but most don't

know how to go about it. The fol-

lowing information will help you

receive the most bang for your

buck when it comes to gold.

Only sell to reputable buyers.

Use resources like the Better

Business Bureau and customer

reviews. Do not do business with

a buyer who does not treat you

as a valued customer or does not

offer a fair price. Do your home-

work in order to safeguard both

you and your financial invest-

ment.

All gold buyers are different, so

it is important to look around

and find someone that you feel

comfortable doing business with.

Check with business groups and

read online reviews. See how

fairly treated former customers

feel. Get the best offer for the

gold you have to sell by

approaching multiple buyers.

Prior to selling old jewelry,

research the going price for gold.

This can help you discern

whether you're being offered a

good price or not. Although

there are many honest gold deal-

ers out there, there are also

those who will try to offer you

much less than it is worth.

Before selling your gold, com-

parison shop. The chances are

good that you will get complete-

ly different offers for your gold.

If you don't shop around, you

may not get what you are owed.

Be sure to take time to choose

your buyer wisely for the best

profit.

Many people don't know that a

magnet can be used to test

whether something is made of

gold or some other type of metal

that is precious. Real gold won't

stick to a magnet. In some cases,

jewelry may have a clasp that is

made of gold, but the rest of the

jewelry piece is made of plated

metal. This can be a useful

method of testing for that.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A Florida

woman said a raccoon tried to

run off with her wallet while

she was visiting the beach with

her two daughters. Danielle

Araica said she and her daugh-

ters were visiting Bunche Beach

in Fort Myers to see a Kemp’s

Ridley sea turtle named Tampa

Red make her expected return

home Monday and they were all

in the water when Araica spot-

ted a raccoon rifling through

her bag, WZVN-TV, Fort Myers,

reported Thursday. “I saw the

raccoon in my bag, so I start

running like a crazy woman,”

Araica said. Arairca said the

raccoon ran off with her pink

wallet in its mouth, but dropped

it in some nearby woods. A

young boy was able to recover

the wallet and return it to

Araica, she said. “I have some

scratches and holes on my wal-

let now, but it’s back and its

safe,” Araica said. Araica said

she thinks the wallet theft was

suspicious, as there was no

food in her bag. “She knew what

she wanted. She went right in

there and got it,” Araica said. “It

was a trained raccoon to go

steal money or wallets out of

women’s bags that was the the-

ory we came up with at the

beach.”

NANTUCKET, Mass. - Officials on

Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island

said they do not know the iden-

tity or motive of a “prankster”

who left a shark carcass on a

pub’s doorstep. John Smith,

Nantucket’s public works oper-

ations manager, said his office

got a call at 7 a.m. Thursday to

remove a dead shark from in

front of the Sea Dog Brew Pub

and he had to call in a front-

end loader to cart away the 6-

foot-long, 100-pound shark, the

Boston Herald reported Friday.

“In the summertime, there’s

always somebody who’s a

prankster,” Smith said. He said

a prankster filled a street with

small “black back” tuna a few

summers ago. “Fortunately this

doesn’t happen that often,” he

said. Sea Dog Brew Pub manag-

er Jimmy Agnew said he was

also perplexed by the shark. “It

the $380,000 tab, has been

funded by a wealthy anonymous

backer who may reveal his

the Telegraph.

RACINE, Wis. - A Wisconsin

woman targeted by pranksters

said she does not consider the

gnome left by her door to be a

fair trade for her missing lion

statues. Liza Michna, 37, of

Racine said she was at the hos-

pital with her daughter, who

was in a diabetic coma, about

two weeks ago and returned

home to find one of the lion

statues that used to guard her

front door was missing, The

(Racine) Journal Times reported

Monday. Michna said the sec-

ond lion was taken two days

later and replaced with a lawn

gnome. Michna said the lions

were a gift from her husband

and five children on Mother’s

Day last year. “I love those

things,” she said. Michna said

she won’t press charges against

the pranksters if the lions are

returned unharmed. “They can

have their gnome,” she said.

JONESBORO, AR - Have you ever

heard the phrase, “One good

turn deserves another”? This

does not always apply. Maybe a

better philosophy would be,

“Don’t bring home stray dogs,

especially if you are a para-

plegic who likes to sleep in the

nude.” This particular para-

plegic apparently had a soft

spot in his heart for a small,

white, fluffy stray he had taken

in about three weeks earlier.

The dog repaid the kindness by

eating one of his testicles while

he slept. He was awakened by a

“burning pain” in his mid-sec-

tion, according to the initial

police report. The 39-year-old

man told police he sleeps in the

nude and noticed the dog was

between his legs. He also

noticed the dog had blood on

its muzzle and front feet. When

the man looked further, accord-

ing to the report, he noticed

that “the dog had eaten one of

his testicles.” Police took the

dog to a local veterinarian

where it was euthanized and

tested for rabies. The man, in a

move that proves the universe

LONDON - A hamburger worth

$380,000 — or about $75,000

per ounce — made with meat

grown in a laboratory will be

cooked and eaten in London

next month, scientists say. The

5-ounce burger will include a

patty of made of synthetic

meat, grown in a laboratory

from the stem cells of a slaugh-

tered cow, the scientist behind

the faux burger said. The costly

patty, set for a public “proof of

principle” consumption, will be

made of about 3,000 strips of

artificial beef, each the size of

a rice grain, grown from bovine

stem cells cultured in the labo-

ratory, the Belfast Telegraph

reported Monday. It is the

result of years of research by

Mark Post, a medical physiolo-

gist at Maastricht University in

the Netherlands. Synthetic

meat could help to save the

world from the growing con-

sumer demand for beef, lamb,

pork and chicken, which could

see the conversion of much of

the world’s remaining forests

to barren, manicured pastures

by the end of this century Post

said. Stem cells taken from just

one animal could, in theory, be

used to make a million times

just made for an interesting

day,” he said. Agnew said a cou-

ple of people had to be

removed from the bar before it

closed at 3 a.m., but he didn’t

think any of the incidents were

severe enough to result in a

dead shark delivery. Smith said

the carcass is being sent to be

processed at a landfill and will

eventually become topsoil.

JOHNSTOWN, PA - In the

absolutely most adorable inci-

dence of moral corruption and

social decay you will hear all

month, authorities say a 12-

year-old boy in Johnstown, PA

used a BB gun to rob a 10-year-

old who was running a lemon-

ade stand. Johnstown Sgt.

Patrick Goggin says the 12-year-

old approached the stand with

what appeared to be a handgun

in his pocket and threatened

the younger boy. Goggin says

the boys “got into a wrestling

match over the money box”

before the older boy took $30

and ran away. 30 bucks? That

one hell of a lemonade busi-

ness. Three other children

chased the boy home and

helped police track him down.

That is when police determined

the boy had a BB gun. Police

aren’t identifying the suspect

because he’ll be charged in

someone who is literally a

whirling dervish, he seemed a

little confined. Touring with

dual drummers he was able to

faithfully replicate the pound-

ing tribal beat and rhythm that

he was synonymous with in the

late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

Adam Ant play for a solid two

hours pounding out 29 classics

or soon to be classics as the

songs he performed off the

new album fit in well with the

more established material.

Despite coming into our con-

scious 35 years ago, Ant still

holds up well. I could tell he

was getting a little winded

before the end of the show, but

I seriously doubt anyone half

his age could keep up what he

was doing onstage. The only

time the show slowed down

was when he introduced the

song “Wonderful” and towards

the end when he took time to

introduce the band. After 25

songs Adam left the stage with

the band. After about a minute

break they came back for a

four-song encore that included

a cool cover of the T. Rex clas-

sic, “Bang A Gong (Get It On)’”.

Opening the show for Adam

was Prima Donna. If they are

the future of rock and roll,

then there is hope. The band is

well-polished (not in the way

of an over-produced and pack-

aged product). The write and

sing songs that are addictive

and leave you wanting more.

They are a refreshing change to

He sings he dances, he even

play guitar. He’s Adam Ant.

Adam Ant put on one hell of a

show Tuesday evening in

Atlanta as he relived past glory

and infused new material off

his latest album that blended

well with the classics.

Unlike Britney Spears, Janet

Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and the

likes, Adam Ant needs no cho-

reographer for his dance

moves. His moves are genuine

and even to this day moves

around the stage gracefully as

he did at the Center Stage

Theatre. You see, Adam is

more than a recording artist.

As he proved once again

Tuesday and every time that

I’ve gotten to witness him, he is

a performance artist, mixing

music, dance and visuals. Not

visuals like sophisticated sets

or lighting, instead through his

movement on stage, his inter-

action with not only his band,

but the audience as well.

While everyone there knew

every single song he performed

by heart and sang along, his

moves, spins and provocative

stares into the crowd mesmer-

ized a very mixed group of peo-

ple in attendance.

Dressed in full pirate regalia

Ant seemed more comfortable

on stage this time than when I

saw him last year at Music

Midtown Festival. I think he

was a little confined by the

stage, which for most bands is

plenty large enough, but for

the current bands that have

that hipster following. Prima

Donna plays rock and roll the

way it’s supposed to be played.

Could this be the year? Long-suffer-ing Falcons fans are hoping so. 2013I pretty much a do-or-die scenariofor Atlanta as a few key players inthe twilight of their storied careerstake one last shot at the Lombarditrophy.

A number of faces have changed, butare they the right ones on a teamthat literally fell ten yards short ofthe Super Bowl last year?

Gone are two veterans on the offen-sive line, running back MichaelTurner defensive end John Abrahamand a couple of components in thesecondary.

There are still plenty of questions asthe Falcons head into their presea-son opener Thursday as they hostthe Cincinnati Bengals.

First, will the defense be better. This is Mike Nolan’s second seasoninstalling his system. The teammade great strides last season as thesecondary, the main liability of MikeSmith’s teams really shined last year. The defense still gave up a lot ofthird down conversions but theaddition of Assante Samuel reallymade a difference. During the play-offs both Seattle and San Franciscoput up yards on the air, but what isnot noted is that these were shortpasses that became big gainsbecause of the linebacking corps, not the secondary. And while theFalcons drafted two promising cor-nerbacks, the linebacker play is stillin question. Another issue ondefense was putting enough pres-sure on opposing quarterbacks. Anaging John Abraham is gone. He ledthe team in sacks last year and justabout every year since joining theteam in ’06, but it was obvious he’sstarting to lose a step. That and theoutrageous money he wanted for hisage at defensive end (36) made iteasy to part ways. Osi Umenyiora, the main off-season defensiveacquisition is five years younger, buthis last couple of years with theGiants have just been okay, notgreat. Maybe a change of scenerywill do him and the Falcons well.

The running game really didn’t get

any younger, maybe a year. MichaelTurner was released after fivestrong years with the team. Turnerholds the franchise record for rush-ing touchdowns. He’s slowed down, however. His yards per carrydropped a full yard last season. But

I don’t blame Turner as much as I dothe new offense that is a passfriendly scheme. Blocking schemesare different as are the offense’spriorities. Turner’s runs were pret-ty much anticipated by defenseswho shut him down. Despite this,Turner still had a nose for the endzone. He hit pay dirt ten times in2012. Steven Jackson just turned 30.He’s being called a “young 30” bycoaches and pundits and come muchhyped for St. Louis where he was theonly bright spot for the team the lastten years. How much he really hasleft in the tank we will see and manylike myself wonder if the Falconsdidn’t make a mistake by takingEddie Lacey out of Alabama in thedraft.

Pass is the priority again under DirkKoetter. Tony Gonzalez is back forhis final season a quest for that illu-sive ring. Are the Falcons’ puttingtoo much of a burden and hope ofthe shoulders of Gonzalez?

Gonzalez has been Matt Ryan’s safe-ty net since he arrived in FloweryBranch four years ago. Ryan hasalmost become too reliant on thefuture Hall-of-Famer. But those fouryears have produced 45 wins and thefirst playoff win since 2004.

The receiving corps has been set thelat couple of years. Roddy Whiteand Julio Jones may be the mostdaunting pair of receivers in leaguehistory. Add Harry Douglas to themix and you literally have literallythree number one receivers on thefield at any given time. As long asRyan has time to setup something isbound to happen. With a fewchanges on the line this yearbecause of retirement and salarycap issues that is in question a littleas well.

Despite the gaudy (for Atlanta) pass-ing game last season the defense

THISWEEK’S

ANSWERS

2013: Do or Die For Atlanta?still has issues. Scoring is still anissue. Despite the ball flyingthrough the air with White , Jonesand Gonzalez making leaping catch-es, scoring has only improved mar-ginally – by maybe two points agame compared to the old fuddy-duddy offense that was run prior toKoetter’s arrival. Too many timesthe Falcons settled for field goalsand later in the season and into theplayoffs turnovers started tobecome an issue. Despite all thesuccess last season, Mike Smith wasa 49-yard field goal miss away frombeing on the unemployment line.

GM Thomas Dimitroff has puttogether an incredible support staffbehind Smith with Nolan andKoetter. The key will be if all thenew pieces put into this puzzle willfit and if they do, how long beforethey truly gel. Surprisingly injury-free except Sean Witherspoon, whoinjured his hand Monday theFalcons look good. No real majorinjuries and suspended players likeSeattle and the 49ers (both sexypicks to compete for the SuperBowl). The Falcons are among thefrontrunners, but their drama-freeexistence has made others overlookthem. No one took them seriouslylast year despite a 13-win regularseason.

Hopefully a few of these questionswill be answered, but unlikely in thefirst preseason game. The Falconstake on the Cincinnati BengalsThursday at 8pm at the GeorgiaDome. Ruse up!
