ENHANED OIL RE OVERY new reality - SPE
Transcript of ENHANED OIL RE OVERY new reality - SPE
Suddenly, online format for personal and professional meetings
became a new normal. But apart from all the limitations, online meetings
gave us new opportunities as well: we have planned a virtual lab tour and
international experts’ presentations.
We for sure kept capability of open discussions and personal (now
virtual) meetings with workshop delegates.
These lean for EOR times we rearranged logic of workshop technical
program. We will discuss hot topics within the following technical sessions:
1. Planning
2. Monitoring, control, case studies
3. Hybrid methods and new technologies
4. EOR perspectives: new reality
Apart from sessions, we will discuss opportunities for EOR stimulation
from government side and both operating and service companies at a
round table.

SPE ONLINE WORKSHOP
ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY new reality
Session 1. Planning This session focuses on stages of complex EOR screening for target deposit, planning of project engineering and EOR design through lab research, reservoir simulation and modeling of VEY impact on oil gathering and processing system. This session includes the projects with completed pilots or pilots underway. Session includes the following topics and areas:
1. Current trends in EOR screening: • Special software: building and use • Machine learning for completed projects analysis and selection of the most efficient technology for target
deposit • EOR application review on analogue fields, error check • Update of screening criteria in the new normal (new technologies, few EOR methods combination, new wellbore
configurations, costs reduction) • Screening and EOR selection based on digital twin of formation model, using digital core and molecular
simulation
2. Challenges and new approaches to lab research regarding EOR screening criteria and design: • Detailed lab research and data gathering for reservoir simulation: program development and planning • Unique devices for lab tests of new EOR technologies (to simulate reservoir conditions) • Use of lab research results in micro and macroscale to design processes in situ • Use of lab markers and reference points for field operations monitoring • New research and lab equipment protocols to develop innovative EOR methods
3. Challenges and new approaches to EOR simulation for risk assessment and field development parameters forecast: • New approaches to EOR simulation • Lab experiments adjustment and upscaling issues • Russian software for reservoir simulation • Modeling of oil processing, gathering and refining in EOR projects
4. Pilot project engineering on the field: • Error check review for projects design and engineering, error prevention recommendations • selection/development of customized equipment for complex projects • challenges and new approaches to EOR pilot projects engineering • economic assessment in the new normal
Session 2. Monitoring, control, case studies «EOR is an endless pilot project». But implementation of EOR is changing this common perception. We will consider best practices in all EOR methods. From the first field experiment to full field implementation, the most important task for each engineer is correct assessment of EOR effect. Monitoring and performance control options, challenges during implementation and rollout, production well stock problems, injectivity losses, extra costs in oil processing and facilities corrosion – all that and more you can discuss during this session. We will stress on:
• Model or analytics? This is the question • How can we survive without waterflooding trends? • Instrumental control methods: why and how much? • 1 MMT from EOR: myth or reality? • How dropping of extra costs for oil processing can kill successful EOR project? • What are the opportunities of EOR projects efficient monitoring for efficiency increase?
Session 3. Hybrid methods and new technologies Hybrid EOR methods are developing these days. The hybrid methods based on formation stimulation synergy of few EOR technologies combination or few agents at the same time. In general terms hybrid EOR methods can be divided into two big groups. The first one is joint implementation of different types of “classic” EOR methods – chemical, thermal or gas. The second involves combined use of different agents and technologies within one “classic” EOR type. And one of key factors for high efficiency of hybrid EOR is composite application of newest working agents.
During the session we are going to discuss: • Chemical EOR methods with combination of different chemical agents: caustic-surfactant-polymer; caustic-
solvent-polymer; surfactant-polymer-foam and others • Chemical EOR with nanoparticles • Combination of heat transfer fluid with chemical agents • Combination of thermal EOR with gas agents, including CO2 • Thermal EOR methods with nanoparticles, including: gas injection, SAGD, electromagnetic heating etc. • New areas in gas methods and water alternating-gas-with chemical agents • Hydrocarbon gases and CO2 miscible displacement with nanoparticles • Technological optimization for hybrid methods • Perspectives for hybrid methods development
Session 4. EOR future development: new reality Hydrocarbon production went through facings, from lowered consumption due to quarantines, concerns
about alternate fuels development to higher and higher KPIs. This is capital intensive area with postponed result, which compels us to find routs to unlock the potential of
the technology and assess risks very optimistically. Let’s find the way not just to save but develop EOR in new normal.
We suggest the following topics: • EOR for multizone reservoir – one technology for many layers • Economics – risk assessment and limits to rational optimism • Alternate sources – geothermal energy to increase oil recovery • CO2 injection for EOR in the scope of carbon management (CCS/CCUS) • New chemical agents – alkoholes, esters • EOR impact on major construction – reuse of chemical agents • EOR for high temperature and abnormally low formation pressure • Fractured reservoirs – involvement of matrix to work
Round table: stimulation of EOR application EOR application requires not just proper engineering evaluation, but significant investments. Its recoupment
scares away license holders from some EOR methods. From the other hand, EOR implementation stimulation is a priority in traditional oil production regions. For these regions prolongation of mature fields use is also a social is-sue, as production companies are often an economic mainstay.
At the same time, launch of production from noncommercial fields with high density or hard-to-recover re-serves is a growth driver for both regions with declining production of conventional hydrocarbons and new petro-leum production clusters. This makes crucial to open a dialog with license holders and government bodies at all levels.
At the round table we will try to find common ground for leading industry experts and government repre-sentatives and discuss prospective of EOR implementation stimulation on Russian fields.
