    Religion is humanity's way of

    expressing our relationship with a

    Spirituality IS that

    Step Principle

    1. We admitted we were powerless over alcoholthat our lives

    had become unmanageable.

    Honesty

    2. Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could

    restore us to sanity.

    Hope

    3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care

of God as we understood Him.

    Trust in God

    4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Truth

    5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being

the exact nature of our wrongs.

    Confession

    6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of

    character.

    Change of Heart

    Step Principal

    7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. Humility

    8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make

    amends to them all.

    Seeking

    Forgiveness

    9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to

do so would injure them or others.

    Restitution and

    Reconciliation

    10. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong,

    promptly admitted it.

    Daily

    Accountability

    11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious

contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of

His will for us and the power to carry that out.

    Personal

    Revelation

    12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried

to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all

    our affairs.

In the world when she or he turns to recovery. The addict experiencesa profound change. The change that occurs gives rise to new ways ofthinking, feeling, and seeing the world as well as to alterations of lifestance and lifestyle.

The recovering addict feels more comfortable with self, moreconnected at home in the world, and more open to others, Therecovering addict relates to others differently, becomes more honest, more engaged, more patient, humble and grateful. The recoveringaddict is more mature, psychologically and emotionally, and is able to

relate with others with humor, altruism and hope (Chappel,1992:Khantzian and Mack,1989)

Many addicts attribute these changes to the protection andintervention of a Higher Power. They have a sense of being cared for

    and caring.
