    However,Holmes refuses to accept the

    easy conclusion drawn from too

Why did McCarthy use the call

cooee!which he and which he and his

    son usuallyused with each other.Why

does James refuse to explain the reason

for their quarrel even though hissilence might mean that he may be

    Themes

1.Greed can drive people to do many evill

things. The two characters who show greed inthe story are charles McCarthy and John

    Turner.

a)When he was a young man in Australia,JohnTurner was a member of a bandit gang who

robbed and murdered people for money.

    b)Ch l M C th d hi k l d f

    54/59

b)Charles McCarthy used his knowledge ofJohn Turner's crime to blackmailhim.Although john turner gave him everything

that he asked for,Charles McCarthy was stillgreedy for more.He wanted his son to marryJohn Turner's daughter so that he would get all

of John Turner's money when he dies.2.The uncertainties surrounding good andevill in this story,we find ourselvessympathising with Turner even though he is

the murderer.in contrast we do not have a lotof sympathies for Charles McCarthy, the manwho is murdered.

a)in Australia, John Turner robbed and killed

  • 8/12/2019 English~9b3792

    55/59

a)in Australia, John Turner robbed and killed

Charles Mc Carthy he was trying to protect his

daughter from greddy and evill man who had

been blackmailling him for almost twentyyears. he is also dying. He did not concermed

    for his daughter.However,he admitted to

holmes that he would not let James beconvicted for his crime. It is for these reasons

that Holmes is willing to say nothing about

what Turner had done.He would only revealwhat John Turner had told him if it was

    necessary to save James.

In his talk with Holmes,we also find out that he had spared

  • 8/12/2019 English~9b3792

    56/59

Charles life during a robbery. However that act of mercy

    brought him misey later.

b)Charles McCarthy was the wagon-driver of a gold convoy that

John Turner and his gang robbed John Turner spared him his

life but when Charles met him years later in England,he used

his knowledge of Turner's crime to blackmail him.Even

though Turner gave him whatever he wanted his son to many

Turner's wealth.so Turner killed him.Yet we do not feel sorryfor him because he had ruthlessly blackmailed.Turner for years

and was obviously a very greddy and selfish man.

    Moral Values

  • 8/12/2019 English~9b3792

    57/59

1.Understanding for others and their suffering

Holmes is prepared to withhold evidence in order tospare.Alice the humiliation of knowing that her fatheris a murderer and had committed others crimesinAustralia. He also does it because he feels sorry forthe dying Turner.

2.Remorse and making up for past misdeeds.

a)Turner tries to make for his past mistakes by living"a quiet and respectable life"He also tried to do goodthings with his money in order to make up for theway he had earned it.

    b) Wh h t d f hi f th '

    b) When he was arrested for his father'smurder, James Mc Carthy said that said thathe was not srprised and that he deserved it.

Although other people took that as hisconfession of guilt, Holmes believedotherwise. Holmes believes that he was feelingguilty for quarrelling with his father and

almost hitting him not long before he waskilled.James's remorse convinces Holmes thathe is not guilty. It shows that he is a good sonand knows his duty to his father.
