Lesson 1.LO: To explore the use of language in a text• Meet it: I can summarise what I have read into two sentences.
• Beat it: I can use a dictionary to find the meaning of words that I don’t know.
• Smash it: I can explain why certain words have been used.
Dictionary
Read pages 32 and 34 from Michael Morpurgo’s version of Beowulf.
As you read, make a list of all the words you don’t know the meaning of.
When you have finished reading, use a dictionary to look up what each word means.
Finally, reread the pages again but this time you will know what each word means.
Page 32
Meet it: find the words you don’t know the meaning of and look up what they mean in a dictionary. You could use an online dictionary if you don’t have one at home.https://dictionary.cambridge.org/
Beat it: In no more than 20 words, summarise what you have read in these two pages.
Smash it: Answer the following:1. Morpurgo has tried to use an old fashioned style
of writing. Why do you think he has done this?2. Find and copy a phrase that Morpurgo has written
that sounds like it was written a thousand years ago.
3. Name one good thing about Morpurgo writing in this style and one bad thing.
Smash it answers
1. Morpurgo has tried to use an old fashioned style of writing. Why do you think he has done this? The original Beowulf is very old and he tried to be similar to that style of writing.
2. Find and copy a phrase that Morpurgo has written that sounds like it was written a thousand years ago. Any phrase that you think is not often written that way now. For example: ‘Only naked strength could end his unnatural life’.
3. Name one good thing about Morpurgo writing in this style and one bad thing. This is up to you. I thought that it is difficult to understand some of it but it feels authentic and dramatic.
Lesson 2
• Today you will answer question on Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo.
• In many of your answers you will need to use the ‘answer it’ and ‘prove it’ sections of APE.

Prepositions – when, where, why.Every sentence needs a subject and a verb.
The dog sat.
A preposition is used when the subject of a sentence and another noun are linked. They tell you when, where or why something happened.
The dog sat on the rug.
Prepositions tell you time (when), the place (where) or the cause (why something happens).
I will eat after swimming - preposition of time
The sheep stood on the roundabout - preposition of place
