Jalil was a meritorious student right from the creation. A top notch student inmatric when he studied in the Central Government High School in Dhaka. He did his intermediate from the famous Missionary Notre DameCollege, Dhaka. Those were very wearisome circumstances for the Urduspeaking community in the former East Pakistan as the battle for making ofBangladesh had touched the zenith. This had its brunt on the life of Jalil whowas restrained to the confines of the legendary Mohammadpur Camp in 1971.

He had to cross the blood bath in Bangladesh to arrive in Karachi followingthe meandering routes through India and Nepal. Admission to Dow wasanother climbing task. Once he was in Dow many relations nurtured. KhalidDoncastri, Akhtar, Shamshad, Saif, Mumtaz Cheema, Sami, Qaisar, TariqKamal Ayubi, Sibte Hasan became fast friends. Many were natural choicesas the bulk had their roots in Bangladesh.

Jalil was a hostel dweller, a very religious person who was a strict followerof saum and salat and all Islamic tenets. He was academically gifted, taught classmates many subjects with ease, and carried a very distinctiveacademic record in all his professional MBBS exams. He came within the foldsJamiat Talaba in letter and spirit. Being an emotionally charged person it wasnext to impossible for him to remain silent on any issue what he deemedincorrect. In his fast paced speech he always called spade a spade withoutbothering about consequences.

He arrived in England after graduation, passed the stumbling block of PLABeasily. He lived in Essex for good time. After doing surgical training asSHO and Registrar, did his FRCS within a short period of time. He helped anumber of classmates who arrived after him in UK. He offered airport pick-up,provide shelter at his place and even paid exam fees for some of themon compassionate grounds without any recompense.

Jalil had a boyish appearance and charm, with only a faint hint of facial hairand friend used to tease him concealing the actual age, particularly whilerunning a busy clinic as a surgeon.

The bait of tax free Saudi Riyals took him to Riyadh, where he worked asa consultant till probably 2004. He had wanted to return to Pakistan to servethe fellow countrymen with an unadulterated spirit. While in Karachi hepicked up a couple of assignments in private sector in Karachi. He did shortstints at Baqai and Liaquat National Hospital. Being an upright and honestman he failed to reconcile to the unbridled corruption, nepotism andprejudiced frame of minds. He had good and cordial working relationship withlate Manzar Saleem. He decided to relocate in the UK again after a brief stayand an unsuccessful attempt to settle in Pakistan.

Currently he is doing locum in Scotland. He has as a daughter and a son.Daughter is a medical student in Manchester. Son is still in school. Duringhis early days in England, he was a frequent visitor at Kundan Restaurantowned by Khalid Doncastri’s elder brother. This was favorite spot for anumber of ‘79ers who would not only eat there but takeout generous portionsof food for belated home consumption.

Mohammad Jalilullah is a bearded person now who contributes on the list serveof the class of ‘79 very regularly and in his own style on multifarious themes.
