The Curse by Lee Su Ann

    Chapter 10

    Scene 1: Azreens House

It was close to midnight before they (Azreen and her father, Saleh Abdullah) got ready

for bed. Azreen was reading in bed when there came a flurry of knocks on the front

door. She jumped to answer. She hesitated for a moment for fear that it might be the

bothersome Puan Normala coming to resume her harassment. But, it wasnt. It was Siti.

Azreen: Siti? What are you doing here?

Siti: (breathless) Kak Azreen (panting) Im so sorry!

Azreen: Sorry? What do you mean? (leaped down the steps of the house)

Siti: Theyve gone to the Old Ladys house. I was at the door when I heard them.

Azreen: That Puan Normala! (clenched her fist in anger)

Siti: No. Its not Puan Normala. Its him Cikgu Asraf.

    Azreen: What? (in disbelief)

Siti: Oh. (covering her mouth) You didnt know? (she continued)

Azreen: Know what? What happened, Siti? (pestered Azreen)

Siti: Nek passed away an hour ago, Azreen.

Siti explained what had happened in Cikgu Asrafshousehold. About Neks passing and

how the neighbours convinced him that it was all the Old Ladys doing; saying that she

had deliberately poisoned her. Due to the intervention, Cikgu Asraf somehow was

convinced by the neighbours and decided to take matters into their own hands. No one

listened to Siti even though she tried to convince them. Azreen then, grabbed her

slippers and without another word, ran as fast as she could into the jungle to the Old

    Ladys house.

Scene 2: The Old Ladys House.

Upon reaching the scene, Azreen saw seven men stood by the edge of the garden with

torches in their hands but Cikgu Asraf was nowhere to be found. Azreen moved

forward, keeping the men at a distance; hoping they would not spot her until it was too

late to stop her. Now that she was closer to the house, she finally spotted her friend. He,

too, held a torch in his hand and a hoe in the other. Azreen can see in her friends eyes

burned wildly like the fire of his torch. As he was about to strode to the door and raised

    the hoe, Azreen sprinted.

    Azreen: NO!!

Cikgu Asrafs hand came down blindly towards the door and the weak wood crashed

    down easily.

Azreen: (pushed Asraf to the side) No, Asraf, No!

Cikgu Asrafs hoe slipped from his hand. He glanced at Azreen only for a brief moment

and picked it up again. Azreen placed herself in front of the broken door.

Azreen: Dont, Asraf. Please dont do this.

Ignoring Azreen instead hebrandished the torch threatening her.

Asraf: Move away. This has nothing to do with you.

Azreen refused to budged and with that Asraf pushed her away causing Azreen to fall

on a pile of gardening tools. As she was trying to regain her composure, she found a

spade next to her, grabbing it and stabbed Asrafs foot. Asraf wailed in pain causing

him to dropped the torch that eventually spreading the fire to the house. Seeing the fire

spreading to the Old Ladys house, Azreen pushed Asraf to the side and crashed into

    the house.

Scene 3: Inside the Old Ladys House

~The Old Ladys Last Words to Azreen~

You must learn to forgive, AzreenInside the house, Azreen called out to the Old Lady but there was no response. All she

can see is the house falling apart. Then, she saw the Old Lady lying beside her stove.

    She rushed to her.

    Old Lady: (coughing) Azreen

Azreen: Come, we must leave at once. (pestered Azreen)

Old Lady: I cant. My legs stuck.

A pillar had smashed down and trapped her leg underneath. Azreen tried to heave the

pillar but failed due to the heat.

Old Lady: No. (grasping Azreens sleeve) Get out now, Azreen. Leave me here.

Azreen: I wont! I wont leave you here. (about to cry)

Old Lady: Times running out. Stop being so stubborn, girl. Get out while you still can.

Azreen: I cant. I wont. (crying)

Suddenly, another part of the wall crashed behind them.

Old Lady: (dropping her hand to her side) Listen when Im gone, promise me that youll

remember all Ive taught you. And(cough) And you must learn to forgive, Azreen. Forgive,

    before its too late.

Azreen: Pleasedont say that. Please dont

Tears fell down her cheeks as she pushed at the heavy pillar. Then, she turned to the

Old Lady whose eyes were now closed. Azreen shook her to wake her up.

Azreen: No! Wake up, Mak Cik! Mak Cik!

Suddenly, a hand grabbed her from behind. A thunderous roar sounded from above as

the burning roof hurled down towards her. Azreen felt pain on her shoulder. The pair

of hands dragged her out and as she lay helplessly on the front yard, the whole structure

    collapsed before her very eyes.

Scene 4: Outside the Old Ladys House.

Azreen stared numbly at the rubble and the dying flickers of the fire. Her tears were

now dry, and her throat parched. Her clothes were tattered and scorched at the sleeves.

Then, slowly she turned to look at her rescuer. Her father, standing there shaking his

    head.

Saleh: There was nothing you could have done, Azreen. (taking a half-hearted step towards

his daughter. Then, turned to go) You should go home and clean up.

    Scene 5: Cikgu Asrafs House

Azreen rushed to Cikgu Asrafs house banging on the door.

Azreen: (banging on the door) ASRAF!! OPEN THIS DOOR AT ONCE!! ASRAF!!

Asraf appeared behind her. He had been sitting outside in the dark shadows. Azreen

turned on him like a wild cat. She beat him, scratched him and kicked him till she broke

down in exhaustion. Asraf did not fight back. He welcomed the pain and when she was

done, he crumpled on the steps in defeat.

Azreen: Why Asraf, why? (moan) You know it was not her fault. She couldnt have done

    that to Nek.

Asraf: (hung his head in shame) Im so sorry.

Azreen: Sorry? (sarcastic remark) Is that all you can say?

Asraf: (shaking his head) I was devastated. I lost my mind for a while. My grandmother was

all I had. But I didnt mean to burn the Old Ladysplace. I just wanted Nek back.

Azreen: Neks dead, Asraf. You couldnt get her back even if you tried. And now youve

killed the Old Lady in your anger. Are you satisfied now?
