INTRODUCTION

Outdoor Table Tennis (or ping pong as it is often referred to) is a compelling, healthy and safe activity suitable for everyone. It is attractive because it is easy to play, low cost, easy access and great fun!

Permanent siting of outdoor tables is relatively easy to provide in public spaces and can engage different people by getting them active.

It is a space efficient ideal activity in a range of settings with a near endless list of suitable locations: education establishments, playgrounds, parks, beach fronts, campsites, picnic areas, holiday centres, hotels, retail parks, shopping centres, fast food outlets, lay‐bys and motorway services, hospitals, amusement parks, waiting areas, home or pub gardens, housing estates, public squares or courtyards in fact anywhere there is a degree of shelter from the wind.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS

1. Table site location — Install the table (s) in a wind sheltered area with good footfall preferably near to an outlet that can lend/hire or sell bats and balls. Next to other play areas ‐ swings, tennis, golf, etc is good or near shops or a kiosk. Check whether planning permission is required.

2. Space requirements — Provide a suitable, permanent risk assessed, outdoor space. (Minimum 991area of 8 x 4 metres for each table including circulation space around each table.)

3. Surface — Provide a well drained, hard surface such as a play surface, concrete, wood, hard standing or tarmac. Table(s) are permanently fixed on installation and cannot subsequently be easily moved. No covering or protection is required. Maintenance is limited.

4. Stimulating activity — Link to a local Table Tennis club/coach who may help to organise and deliver activities such as fun games, come and try sessions, tournaments, and master classes t0 stimulate and maintain interest. The curved legs of this table make it extremely attractive and the design means it will fit perfectly in the environment of a school, campsite, park or other public place. Designed to be fixed to the ground, it comes equipped with adjustable screw fittings. It can be installed in public places without risk of losing its parts: its permanent leg assembly and net cannot be removed. The playing surface is resistant to bat blows and has a 10 year guarantee against deformation, delamination and obliteration of the white lines. Its toughness makes it an all‐terrain table.

This model was selected by Ping London for their project during the summer of 2010 which led to 100 tables being installed in public places such as parks, public squares, railway stations and airports. A number of tables were also supplied for the ETTA’s outdoor tables project across London’s parks. Hundreds of schools across the UK have purchased this model and this table is frequently recommended by PE teachers to other schools.

Some time ago, a general enquiry led us into a market which we had never considered in the past but which has now become an income stream in its own right. We were asked by the English Table Tennis Association to look into the feasibility of producing a table tennis table that couldn't be broken. We came up with the initial design concept and fol‐lowed that through to production. The tables are now being sold into schools, colleges, and council run play parks across the country.
