SAMPLE WRITING – A REVIEW

You stayed at a really good hotel on holiday. Write a review of the hotel (100-130 words) explaining the experience you had. You should:

• talk about your room and the hotel’s facilities

• say what the staff were like

Finnie Hotel, Yorkshire

I’d never been to Leeds before, so I was incredibly excited when my family booked a two-week holiday there at the end of July, staying in the Finnie Hotel. So what was it like? Well, I was very pleased with our room. It was spacious, had lovely décor, a very comfortable bed, not to mention that all important en-suite bathroom! The facilities were excellent too, with everything we needed to relax, like a modern gym, restaurant, swimming pool and tennis courts. As for the staff, they were superb; always polite and helpful and very knowledgeable about the local area. What’s more, the hotel’s location was very convenient – near the city, but quiet and peaceful. All in all, we had a wonderful time there. Although Hotel Finnie was a little expensive, I would thoroughly recommend it for family and couples’ breaks.

HOW TO WRITE A REVIEW STRUCTURE Title – your review should always have a title. It can just be the name of the thing you are reviewing, for example. Summing up a review – whatever you are reviewing, there are a few things you usually have to say in the final paragraph. These include:

- a comment on the price

- your opinion (positive or negative) and

- your recommendation (would you recommend it for people and if so for whom)

LANGUAGE Contractions – remember this is an informal style of writing, so you can use contractions, for example I’ll not I will Questions – you can speak directly to the reader and ask questions. This is one way of saying what you are going to do next. In a formal piece of writing, you might say: I am now going to review the hotel I stayed at. Here, you can just ask: So what was it like? instead. Punctuation – you can also use colourful punctuation like exclamation marks (¡) in a review. But don’t overdo this. Explain your points and give examples – it’s important when you say something was good or bad, to explain why. Here, when the writer says he was very pleased with his room, he goes on to say what pleased him. And similarly, when he praises the facilities, he gives examples of the facilities that were there.
