After Naoetsu Town (now Joetsu City) was selected as the starting point for what is now the JR Shin’etsu Main Line, Hotel Century Ikaya opened there in 1886. In 1897, after the railroad opened, the hotel moved to its current location by Naoetsu Station. The Colonial-style front entrance of the hotel served as a symbol of the Naoetsu Station area from its completion in 1913 until its demolition in 1986 due to hotel construction work, appearing in movies and in the Fumiko Hayashi novel Horoki (A Wanderer’s Notebook).

The restaurant Tsurugiya This high-end restaurant boasts some two centuries of history. The name “Tsurugiya” literally means “house where cranes come;” according to oral history, the name refers to a family of cranes that alighted on the house’s pine tree ̶ a highly auspicious omen. Later, in 1878, Tsurugiya served the Meiji emperor in Itoigawa during his visit to the Hokuriku region, according to records.

He has also handled project direction and operational manage-ment for the accommodations facilities Hotel Koo Otsu Hyaku-cho and Hakone Honbako, both of which opened in 2018.

Head of Train Planning and Design for the Echigo Tokimeki Resort Setsugekka

Yasuyuki KawanishiRepresentative Director of Ichibansen First Class Architect OfficeBorn in Nara in 1976. After finishing his master’s program in Architecture in the Division of Design Science at Chiba University, he was invited to study at the School of Architecture of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He went on to work at the Paris research base for SNCF-AREP, the French national railway company. He has also worked with A. Kuryu Architect & Associates Co., Ltd. and Energy Labo (Kitayama & Company); today, he serves as the representative director of Ichibansen, and as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Architecture of the Chiba University Faculty of Engineering. Kawanishi’s work on the Setsugekka train has won the Public Space Design category of the SBID International Design Award, as well as a Silver Award from Hong Kong’s DFA Awards. His renovation work for Nakamura Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway won a Railway Design award from the prestigious Watford Group Brunel Awards in 2014. He has also won many other domestic and international honors. His work has included trains and stations, as well as offices, homes, factories, preschools and kindergartens, facilities for people with disabilities, and more, all featuring user-oriented design.

For the Echigo Tokimeki Resort Setsugekka train, we have worked to create a truly one-of-a-kind “made in Niigata” experience, using a variety of local techniques and technolo-gies. Every part of the train is designed to enable passengers to enjoy the incredible beauty of the sea and mountains of Niigata in comfort. After we designed the seats and tables in the passenger areas, they were carefully made, one by one, by artisans who had made seats for the imperial family’s private train. That being said, though, we hope that passengers do not spend their entire trip seated. We recommend visiting the Sakura Lounge and the train’s observation deck ̶ by getting up and walking around the Setsugekka train, and stepping off onto the platform at each of the stops, passengers can add even more to their travel, and enjoy even better views. We look forward to seeing you on the Setsugekka.

In order to offer truly exceptional meals, we put a particu-lar emphasis on using ingredients from Niigata, prepared with the finest techniques. The natural bounty of Niigata is one reason why these meals are so delicious, but there is also another reason: a great deal of trial and error by each restaurant, working to craft meals perfectly suited to be served on a train. In particular, the delicate dishes produced by Chef Iizuka of Ryuzu proved particularly difficult to reproduce, leading to constant experimentation and testing. The result of this effort speaks for itself. We hope you will enjoy the outstanding cuisine of Tsurugiya and Ryuzu, alongside the breathtaking natural beauty of Niigata.

The Echigo TOKImeki Railway is proud to present the Echigo TOKImeki Resort Setsugekka ( 雪月花 ) sightseeing train. Having secured the greatest view in the country within its passenger cars, it was built in a luxurious fashion appropriate for the train to be crowned a resort in itself. The picturesque views of the Sea of Japan coast can at times be harsh, and at times gracious with its blessings. The magnificent mountain ranges of Myoko call forward the title of “Echigo’s Mt. Fuji.”Watch through the train’s broad windows as the sea and mountains seem to approach with intensity. For meals, we pride ourselves in our exclusive choice of regionally-grown, seasonal ingredients in the meals we prepare. We also make it a point to focus on the “flavor” of Niigata when deciding the train cars’ interior décor as well, so no matter how many times passengers ride, they are sure to encounter something new.Enjoy the beautiful views made possible by the region’s clearly defined four seasons, all while partaking in a meal prepared by making the best use of the ingredients picked in those very same locations.

One ride will let the passenger get their fill of sea and mountain scenery. The location is brimming with the fresh fruits of the sea and mountains.
