    173. We r ai ned down on t hem a shower [ of br i mst one] : and evi l was t he shower ont hose who wer e admoni shed [ but heeded not ] !

    174. Ver i l y i n t hi s i s a Si gn: but most of t hem do not bel i eve.

    175. And ver i l y t hy Lor d i s He, t he Exal t ed i n Mi ght Most Mer ci f ul .

    176. The Compani ons of t he Wood r ej ect ed t he messenger s.

    177. Behol d, Shu' ai b sai d t o t hem: "Wi l l ye not f ear [ Al l ah] ?

    178. " I am t o you a messenger wor t hy of al l t r ust .

    179. " So f ear Al l ah and obey me.

    180. " No r ewar d do I ask of you f or i t : my rewar d i s onl y f r om t he Lord of t heWorl ds.

    181. " Gi ve j ust measure, and cause no l oss [ t o ot her s by f r aud] .

    182. " And wei gh wi t h scal es t r ue and upr i ght .

    183. " And wi t hhol d not t hi ngs j ust l y due to men, nor do evi l i n the l and,wor ki ng mi schi ef .

    184. " And f ear Hi m Who cr eat ed you and [ who cr eat ed] t he gener at i ons bef or e[ you] "

    185. They sai d: " Thou art onl y one of t hose bewi t ched!

    186. " Thou art no mor e t han a mor t al l i ke us, and i ndeed we t hi nk t hou ar t al i ar !

    187. "Now cause a pi ece of t he sky t o f al l on us, i f t hou ar t t r ut hf ul ! "

    188. He sai d: " My Lor d knows best what ye do. "

    189. But t hey r ej ect ed hi m. Then t he puni shment of a day of over shadowi ng gl oom

    sei zed t hem, and t hat was t he Penal t y of a Gr eat Day.190. Ver i l y i n t hat i s a Si gn: but most of t hem do not bel i eve.

    191. And ver i l y thy Lor d i s He, t he Exal t ed i n Mi ght , Most Mer ci f ul .

    192. Ver i l y t hi s i s a Revel at i on f r om t he Lor d of t he Wor l ds:

    193. Wi t h i t came down t he spi r i t of Fai t h and Trut h-

    194. To t hy hear t and mi nd, t hat t hou mayest admoni sh.

    195. I n t he per spi cuous Ar abi c t ongue.

    196. Wi t hout doubt i t i s [ announced] i n t he myst i c Books of f ormer peopl es.

    197. I s i t not a Si gn t o them t hat t he Lear ned of t he Chi l dr en of I sr ael knew i t

    [as t rue]?198. Had We r eveal ed i t t o any of t he non- Ar abs,

    199. And had he reci t ed i t t o t hem, t hey woul d not have bel i eved i n i t .

    200. Thus have We caused i t t o ent er t he hear t s of t he si nners .

    201. They wi l l not bel i eve i n i t unt i l t hey see t he gr i evous Penal t y;

    202. But t he [Penal t y] wi l l come t o t hem of a sudden, whi l e they per cei ve i tnot ;

    203. Then t hey wi l l say: " Shal l we be r espi t ed?"

    204. Do t hey t hen ask f or Our Penal t y t o be hast ened on?

    205. Seest t hou? I f We do l et t hem enj oy [t hi s l i f e] f or a f ew year s,

    206. Yet t here comes t o t hem at l engt h t he [ Puni shment ] whi ch t hey werepromi sed!

    207. I t wi l l pr of i t t hem not t hat t hey enj oyed [ t hi s l i f e] !

    208. Never di d We dest r oy a popul at i on, but had i t s warner s -

    209. By way of r emi nder ; and We never ar e unj ust .

    210. No evi l ones have br ought down t hi s [ Revel at i on] :

    211. I t woul d nei t her sui t t hem nor woul d t hey be abl e [ t o pr oduce i t ] .

    212. I ndeed t hey have been r emoved f ar f r om even [ a chance of ] hear i ng i t .

    213. So cal l not on any ot her god wi t h Al l ah, or t hou wi l t be among t hose undert he Penal t y.

    214. And admoni sh t hy near est ki nsmen,

    215. And l ower t hy wi ng t o t he Bel i ever s who f ol l ow t hee.216. Then i f t hey di sobey thee, say: "I am f r ee [ of r esponsi bi l i t y] f or what yedo!"

    217. And put t hy tr ust on t he Exal t ed i n Mi ght , t he Mer ci f ul , -

    218. Who seet h t hee st andi ng f ort h [ i n pr ayer ] ,

    219. And t hy movement s among t hose who pr ost r at e t hemsel ves,

    220. For i t i s He Who hear et h and knowet h al l t hi ngs.

    221. Shal l I i nf or m you, [ O peopl e! ] , on whom i t i s t hat t he evi l ones descend?

    222. They descend on ever y l yi ng, wi cked per son,

    223. [ I nt o whose ear s] t hey pour hear say vani t i es, and most of t hem ar e l i ar s.224. And t he Poet s, - I t i s t hose st r ayi ng i n Evi l , who f ol l ow t hem:

    225. Seest t hou not t hat t hey wander di st r act ed i n ever y val l ey?-

    226. And t hat t hey say what t hey pr act i se not ?-

    227. Except t hose who bel i eve, wor k r i ght eousness, engage much i n t her emembrance of Al l ah, and def end t hemsel ves onl y af t er t hey are unj ust l yat t acked. And soon wi l l t he unj ust assai l ant s know what vi ci ssi t udes t hei raf f ai r s wi l l t ake!

    SURA 27. Naml, or the Ants

    1. These are verses of t he Qur ' an, - a book t hat makes [ t hi ngs] cl ear ;

    2. A gui de: and gl ad t i di ngs f or t he bel i ever s, -

    3. Those who est abl i sh r egul ar pr ayer s and gi ve i n r egul ar char i t y, and al sohave [ f ul l ] assur ance of t he her eaf t er .

    4. As t o t hose who bel i eve not i n t he Hereaf t er , We have made t hei r deedspl easi ng i n t hei r eyes; and so t hey wander about i n di st r act i on.

    5. Such ar e they f or whom a gr i evous Penal t y i s [ wai t i ng] ; and i n t he Her eaf t ert hei r s wi l l be t he gr eat est l oss .

    6. As t o t hee, t he Qur ' an i s best owed upon t hee f r om t he pr esence of one who i swi se and al l - knowi ng.

    7. Behol d! Moses sai d t o hi s f ami l y: "I per cei ve a f i r e; soon wi l l I br i ng youf r om t her e some i nf ormat i on, or I wi l l br i ng you a bur ni ng br and t o l i ght ourf uel , t hat ye may warn your sel ves.

    8. But when he came t o t he [ f i r e] , a voi ce was hear d: " Bl essed are t hose i n t hef i r e and t hose ar ound: and gl ory t o Al l ah, t he Lor d of t he wor l ds.

    9. "O Moses! ver i l y, I am Al l ah, t he exal t ed i n mi ght , t he wi se! . . .

    10. " Now do t hou t hrow t hy r od! " But when he saw i t movi ng [ of i t s own accor d] asi f i t had been a snake, he tur ned back i n r et r eat , and ret r aced not hi s st eps:" O Moses! " [ i t was sai d] , "Fear not: t r ul y, i n My pr esence, t hose cal l ed asmessenger s have no f ear , -

    11. " But i f any have done wr ong and have t her eaf t er subst i t ut ed good t o t ake t hepl ace of evi l , t rul y, I am Of t - For gi vi ng, Most Merc i f ul .

    12. " Now put t hy hand i nt o t hy bosom, and i t wi l l come f ort h whi t e wi t hout st ai n[ or harm] : [ t hese ar e] among t he ni ne Si gns [ t hou wi l t t ake] t o Phar aoh and hi speopl e: f or t hey ar e a peopl e rebel l i ous i n t r ansgr essi on. "

    13. But when Our Si gns came t o t hem, t hat shoul d have opened t hei r eyes, t heysai d: "Thi s i s sor cer y mani f est ! "

    14. And they r ej ect ed those Si gns i n i ni qui t y and ar r ogance, t hough t hei r soul swere convi nced t hereof : so see what was t he end of t hose who act ed cor r upt l y!

    15. We gave [ i n t he past ] knowl edge t o Davi d and Sol omon: And t hey bot h sai d:" Pr ai se be t o Al l ah, Who has f avour ed us above many of hi s s ervant s whobel i eve! "

    16. And Sol omon was Davi d' s hei r . He sai d: " O ye peopl e! We have been t aught t hespeech of bi r ds, and on us has been best owed [ a l i t t l e] of al l t hi ngs: t hi s i si ndeed Gr ace mani f est [ f r om Al l ah. ] "17. And bef or e Sol omon were mar shal l ed hi s host s, - of J i nns and men and bi r ds,and t hey wer e al l kept i n or der and ranks.

    18. At l engt h, when t hey came t o a [ l owl y] val l ey of ant s, one of t he ant s sai d:" O ye ant s, get i nt o your habi t at i ons, l est Sol omon and hi s host s cr ush you[ under f oot ] wi t hout knowi ng i t . "

    19. So he smi l ed, amused at her speech; and he sai d: " O my Lor d! so or der met hat I may be gr at ef ul f or Thy f avours, whi ch t hou hast best owed on me and on mypar ent s, and t hat I may work t he r i ght eousness t hat wi l l pl ease Thee: And admi tme, by Thy Gr ace, t o t he ranks of Thy r i ght eous Ser vant s. "

    24. " I f ound her and her peopl e wor shi ppi ng t he sun besi des Al l ah: Sat an hasmade t hei r deeds seem pl easi ng i n t hei r eyes, and has kept t hem away f r om t hePat h, - so t hey r ecei ve no gui dance, -

    25. " [ Kept t hem away f r om t he Pat h] , t hat t hey shoul d not worshi p Al l ah, Whobri ngs t o l i ght what i s hi dden i n t he heavens and t he eart h, and knows what yehi de and what ye reveal .

    26. " Al l ah! - t her e i s no god but He! - Lord of t he Thr one Supr eme! "

    27. [ Sol omon] sai d: " Soon shal l we see whet her t hou hast t ol d t he t r ut h or l i ed!

    28. "Go t hou, wi t h t hi s l et t er of mi ne, and del i ver i t t o t hem: t hen dr aw backf r om t hem, and [ wai t t o] see what answer t hey r et ur n". . .

    29. [ The queen] sai d: "Ye chi ef s! her e i s del i ver ed t o me - a l et t er wor t hy ofr espect .

    30. "I t i s f r om Sol omon, and i s [ as f ol l ows] : ' I n t he name of Al l ah, MostGr aci ous, Most Mer ci f ul :

    31. " ' Be ye not arr ogant agai nst me, but come t o me i n submi ssi on [ t o t he t r ueRel i gi on] . ' "

    32. She sai d: "Ye chi ef s! advi se me i n [ t hi s] my af f ai r : no af f ai r have Ideci ded except i n your pr esence. "

    33. They sai d: " We ar e endued wi t h st r engt h, and gi ven t o vehement war : but t hecommand i s wi t h t hee; so consi der what t hou wi l t command. "

    34. She sai d: " Ki ngs, when t hey ent er a count r y, despoi l i t , and make t henobl est of i t s peopl e i t s meanest t hus do t hey behave.

    35. " But I am goi ng t o send hi m a pr esent , and [ wai t ] t o see wi t h what [ answer ]r et ur n [ my] ambassador s. "

    36. Now when [ t he embassy] came t o Sol omon, he sai d: " Wi l l ye gi ve me abundancei n weal t h? But t hat whi ch Al l ah has gi ven me i s bet t er t han t hat whi ch He hasgi ven you! Nay i t i s ye who r ej oi ce i n your gi f t !

    37. " Go back t o t hem, and be sure we shal l come t o t hem wi t h such host s as t heywi l l never be abl e t o meet : We shal l expel t hem f r om t her e i n di sgr ace, and t heywi l l f eel humbl ed [ i ndeed] . "

    38. He sai d [ t o hi s own men] : " Ye chi ef s! whi ch of you can br i ng me her t hr onebef or e t hey come t o me i n submi ss i on?"

    39. Sai d an ' I f r i t , of t he J i nns : " I wi l l br i ng i t t o t hee bef ore t hou r i se f r omt hy counci l : i ndeed I have f ul l st r engt h f or t he pur pose, and may be t r ust ed. "

    40. Sai d one who had knowl edge of t he Book: " I wi l l br i ng i t t o t hee wi t hi n t het wi nkl i ng of an eye! " Then when [ Sol omon] saw i t pl aced f i r ml y bef or e hi m, hesai d: "Thi s i s by t he Gr ace of my Lor d! - t o t est me whet her I am gr at ef ul orungr at ef ul ! and i f any i s gr at ef ul , t r ul y hi s gr at i t ude i s [ a gai n] f or hi s ownsoul ; but i f any i s ungr at ef ul , t r ul y my Lor d i s Free of al l Needs, Supr eme i nHonour ! "

    41. He sai d: "Transf or m her t hr one out of al l r ecogni t i on by her : l et us seewhet her s he i s gui ded [ t o t he t r ut h] or i s one of t hose who recei ve nogui dance. "

    42. So when she ar r i ved, she was asked, " I s t hi s t hy t hr one?" She sai d, " I t was j ust l i ke t hi s; and knowl edge was best owed on us i n advance of t hi s, and we havesubmi t t ed t o Al l ah [ i n I sl am] . "

    44. She was asked t o ent er t he l of t y Pal ace: but when she saw i t , she t hought i twas a l ake of wat er , and she [ t ucked up her ski r t s] , uncover i ng her l egs. Hesai d: " Thi s i s but a pal ace paved smoot h wi t h sl abs of gl ass. " She sai d: " O myLor d! I have i ndeed wr onged my soul : I do [ now] submi t [ i n I sl am] , wi t h Sol omon,

    t o the Lor d of t he Wor l ds. "45. We sent [ af or et i me] , t o t he Thamud, t hei r br other Sal i h, sayi ng, "Ser veAl l ah" : But behol d, t hey became t wo f act i ons quar r el l i ng wi t h each ot her .

    46. He sai d: " O my peopl e! why ask ye t o hast en on t he evi l i n pr ef er ence t o t hegood? I f onl y ye ask Al l ah f or f orgi veness, ye may hope t o r ecei ve mer cy.

    47. They sai d: " I l l omen do we augur f r om t hee and t hose t hat ar e wi t h t hee". Hesai d: "Your i l l omen i s wi t h Al l ah; yea, ye ar e a peopl e under t r i al . "

    48. There were i n t he ci t y ni ne men of a f ami l y, who made mi schi ef i n t he l and,and woul d not r ef or m.

    49. They sai d: " Swear a mut ual oat h by Al l ah t hat we shal l make a secr et ni ghtat t ack on hi m and hi s peopl e, and t hat we shal l t hen say t o hi s hei r [ when heseeks vengeance] : ' We were not pr esent at t he sl aught er of hi s peopl e, and wear e pos i t i vel y t el l i ng t he t r ut h. ' "

    50. They pl ot t ed and pl anned, but We t oo pl anned, even whi l e t hey per cei ved i tnot .

    51. Then see what was t he end of t hei r pl ot ! - t hi s, t hat We dest r oyed t hem andt hei r peopl e, al l [ of t hem] .

    52. Now such were t hei r houses, - i n ut t er r ui n, - because t hey pr act i sed wr ong-doi ng. Ver i l y i n t hi s i s a Si gn f or peopl e of knowl edge.

    53. And We saved t hose who bel i eved and pr act i sed r i ght eousness.

    54. [ We al so sent ] Lut [ as a messenger ] : behol d, He sai d t o hi s peopl e, " Do yedo what i s shamef ul t hough ye see [ i t s i ni qui t y]?

    55. Woul d ye r eal l y approach men i n your l ust s r at her t han women? Nay, ye ar e apeopl e [ gr ossl y] i gnor ant !

    56. But hi s peopl e gave no ot her answer but t hi s: t hey sai d, " Dr i ve out t hef ol l owers of Lut f r om your ci t y: t hese are i ndeed men who want t o be cl ean andpure!"

    57. But We saved hi m and hi s f ami l y, except hi s wi f e; her We dest i ned t o be oft hose who l agged behi nd.

    58. And We r ai ned down on t hem a shower [ of br i mst one] : and evi l was t he showeron t hose who wer e admoni shed [ but heeded not ] !

    59. Say: Pr ai se be t o Al l ah, and Peace on hi s ser vant s whom He has chosen [ f orhi s Message] . [ Who] i s bet t er ?- Al l ah or t he f al se gods t hey associ at e [ wi t hHi m] ?

    60. Or , Who has cr eat ed t he heavens and t he ear t h, and Who sends you down r ai nf r om t he sky?     63. Or , Who gui des you t hr ough t he dept hs of dar kness on l and and sea, and Whosends t he wi nds as her al ds of gl ad t i di ngs, goi ng bef ore Hi s Mercy? [ Can t her ebe anot her ] god besi des Al l ah?- Hi gh i s Al l ah above what t hey associ at e wi t hHi m!

    64. Or , Who or i gi nat es cr eat i on, t hen repeat s i t , and who gi ves you sust enancef r om heaven and ear t h? [ Can t her e be anot her ] god besi des Al l ah? Say, " Br i ngf or t h your ar gument , i f ye ar e t el l i ng t he t r ut h! "

    65. Say: None i n t he heavens or on ear t h, except Al l ah, knows what i s hi dden:nor can t hey per cei ve when t hey shal l be r ai sed up [ f or J udgment ] .

    66. St i l l l ess can t hei r knowl edge compr ehend t he Her eaf t er: Nay, t hey ar e i ndoubt and uncer t ai nt y t hereanent ; nay, t hey ar e bl i nd t her eunt o!

    67. The Unbel i evers say: " What ! when we become dust , - we and our f at hers , - shal lwe r eal l y be r ai sed [ f r om t he dead] ?68. "I t i s t r ue we wer e pr omi sed t hi s, - we and our f at her s bef ore [ us] : t hesear e not hi ng but t al es of t he anci ent s. "

    69. Say: " Go ye t hrough t he ear t h and see what has been t he end of t hose gui l t y[ of si n] . "

    70. But gr i eve not over t hem, nor di st r ess t hysel f because of t hei r pl ot s.

    71. They al so say: " When wi l l t hi s promi se [ come t o pass] ? [ Say] i f ye ar et r ut hf ul . "

    72. Say: " I t may be t hat some of t he event s whi ch ye wi sh t o hast en on may be[ cl ose] i n your pur sui t ! "

    73. But ver i l y thy Lor d i s f ul l of gr ace t o manki nd: Yet most of t hem ar eungr at ef ul .

    82. And when t he Wor d i s f ul f i l l ed agai nst t hem [ t he unj ust ] , we shal l pr oducef r om t he ear t h a beast t o [ f ace] t hem: He wi l l speak t o t hem, f or t hat manki nddi d not bel i eve wi t h assurance i n Our Si gns.

    83. One day We shal l gat her t oget her f r om every peopl e a t r oop of t hose whor ej ect our Si gns, and t hey shal l be kept i n r anks, -

    84. Unt i l , when they come [ bef or e t he J udgment - seat ] , [ Al l ah] wi l l say: " Di d yer ej ect My Si gns, t hough ye comprehended t hem not i n knowl edge, or what was i t yedi d?"

    85. And t he Wor d wi l l be f ul f i l l ed agai nst t hem, because of t hei r wr ong- doi ng,and t hey wi l l be unabl e t o speak [ i n pl ea] .

    86. See t hey not t hat We have made t he Ni ght f or t hem t o r est i n and t he Day t ogi ve t hem l i ght ? Ver i l y i n t hi s ar e Si gns f or any peopl e t hat bel i eve!

    87. And t he Day t hat t he Tr umpet wi l l be sounded - t hen wi l l be smi t t en wi t ht er r or t hose who ar e i n t he heavens, and t hose who ar e on ear t h, except such asAl l ah wi l l pl ease [ t o exempt ] : and al l shal l come to Hi s [ Pr esence] as bei ngsconsci ous of t hei r l owl i ness.

    88. Thou seest t he mount ai ns and t hi nkest t hem f i r ml y f i xed: but t hey shal l passaway as t he cl ouds pass away: [ such i s] t he ar t i st r y of Al l ah, who di sposes ofal l t hi ngs i n per f ect or der : f or he i s wel l acquai nt ed wi t h al l t hat ye do.

    89. I f any do good, good wi l l [ accrue] t o them t her ef r om; and t hey wi l l besecur e f r om t er r or t hat Day.

    90. And i f any do evi l , t hei r f aces wi l l be t hr own headl ong i nt o t he Fi r e: "Doye r ecei ve a r eward ot her t han t hat whi ch ye have earned by your deeds?"

    91. For me, I have been commanded t o ser ve t he Lor d of t hi s ci t y, Hi m Who hassanct i f i ed i t and t o Whom [ bel ong] al l t hi ngs: and I am commanded t o be of t hosewho bow i n I s l am t o Al l ah' s Wi l l , -

    92. And t o r ehear se t he Qur ' an: and i f any accept gui dance, t hey do i t f or t hegood of t hei r own soul s, and i f any str ay, say: " I am onl y a War ner " .

    93. And say: " Prai se be t o Al l ah, Who wi l l soon show you Hi s Si gns, so t hat yeshal l know t hem" ; and t hy Lor d i s not unmi ndf ul of al l t hat ye do.

    SURA 28. Qasas, or Narration

    1. Ta. Si n. Mi m.

    2. These are Verses of t he Book t hat makes [ t hi ngs] cl ear .

    3. We r ehear se t o t hee some of t he st or y of Moses and Pharaoh i n Tr ut h, f orpeopl e who bel i eve.

    4. Trul y Phar aoh el at ed hi msel f i n t he l and and br oke up i t s peopl e i nt osect i ons, depr essi ng a smal l group among t hem: t hei r sons he sl ew, but he keptal i ve t hei r f emal es: f or he was i ndeed a maker of mi schi ef .

    5. And We wi shed t o be Gr aci ous t o t hose who were bei ng depressed i n t he l and,t o make t hem l eader s [ i n Fai t h] and make t hem hei r s,

    6. To est abl i sh a f i r m pl ace f or t hem i n t he l and, and t o show Phar aoh, Haman,and t hei r host s, at t hei r hands, t he ver y t hi ngs agai nst whi ch t hey wer e t aki ngpr ecaut i ons.

    7. So We sent t hi s i nspi r at i on t o the mot her of Moses: "Suckl e [ t hy chi l d] , butwhen t hou hast f ear s about hi m, cast hi m i nt o the r i ver , but f ear not nor

    8. Then t he peopl e of Phar aoh pi cked hi m up [ f r om t he r i ver ] : [ I t was i nt ended]t hat [ Moses] shoul d be t o t hem an adver sar y and a cause of sor r ow: f or Pharaohand Haman and [ al l ] t hei r host s were men of si n.

    9. The wi f e of Phar aoh sai d: " [ Her e i s] j oy of t he eye, f or me and f or t hee:sl ay hi m not . I t may be t hat he wi l l be use t o us, or we may adopt hi m as ason. " And t hey percei ved not [ what t hey were doi ng] !

    10. But t her e came t o be a voi d i n t he hear t of t he mot her of Moses: She wasgoi ng al most t o di scl ose hi s [ case] , had We not st r engt hened her heart [ wi t hf ai t h] , so t hat she mi ght r emai n a [ f i r m] bel i ever .

    11. And she sai d t o t he si st er of [ Moses] , " Fol l ow hi m" so she [ t he si st er ]wat ched hi m i n t he char act er of a st r anger . And t hey knew not .

    12. And we or dai ned that he ref used suck at f i r st , unt i l [ Hi s si st er came upand] sai d: "Shal l I poi nt out t o you t he peopl e of a house t hat wi l l nour i sh andbr i ng hi m up f or you and be si ncer el y at t ached t o hi m?" . . .

    13. Thus di d We r est ore hi m t o hi s mot her , t hat her eye mi ght be comf ort ed, t hatshe mi ght not gr i eve, and t hat she mi ght know t hat t he pr omi se of Al l ah i s t r ue:but most of t hem do not unders t and.

    14. When he reached f ul l age, and was f i r ml y est abl i shed [ i n l i f e] , We best owedon hi m wi sdom and knowl edge: f or t hus do We r ewar d t hose who do good.

    15. And he ent er ed t he ci t y at a t i me when i t s peopl e were not wat chi ng: and hef ound t her e t wo men f i ght i ng, - one of hi s own r el i gi on, and t he ot her , of hi sf oes. Now t he man of hi s own r el i gi on appeal ed t o hi m agai nst hi s f oe, and Mosesst r uck hi m wi t h hi s f i st and made an end of hi m. He sai d: " Thi s i s a work ofEvi l [ Sat an] : f or he i s an enemy t hat mani f est l y mi sl eads! "

    16. He pr ayed: " O my Lor d! I have i ndeed wr onged my soul ! Do Thou t hen f or gi veme! " So [ Al l ah] f or gave hi m: f or He i s t he Of t - For gi vi ng, Most Mer ci f ul .

    17. He sai d: " O my Lor d! For t hat Thou hast best owed Thy Gr ace on me, nevershal l I be a hel p t o those who si n! "

    18. So he saw t he morni ng i n t he ci t y, l ooki ng about , i n a st at e of f ear , whenbehol d, t he man who had, t he day bef ore, sought hi s hel p cal l ed al oud f or hi shel p [ agai n] . Moses sai d t o hi m: "Thou ar t t r ul y, i t i s cl ear , a quar r el somef el l ow!"

    19. Then, when he deci ded t o l ay hol d of t he man who was an enemy t o bot h oft hem, t hat man sai d: " O Moses! I s i t t hy i nt ent i on t o sl ay me as t hou sl ewest aman yest er day? Thy i nt ent i on i s none ot her t han t o become a power f ul vi ol ent mani n t he l and, and not t o be one who set s t hi ngs r i ght ! "

    20. And t her e came a man, r unni ng, f r om t he f ur t hest end of t he Ci t y. He sai d:" O Moses! t he Chi ef s ar e t aki ng counsel t oget her about t hee, t o sl ay t hee: so

    get t hee away, f or I do gi ve t hee si ncer e advi ce. "21. He t heref ore got away t her ef r om, l ooki ng about , i n a st at e of f ear . Heprayed " O my Lord! save me f r om peopl e gi ven t o wr ong- doi ng. "

    22. Then, when he t urned hi s f ace t owards [ t he l and of ] Madyan, he sai d: " I dohope t hat my Lor d wi l l show me t he smoot h and st r ai ght Pat h. "

    23. And when he ar r i ved at t he wat eri ng [ pl ace] i n Madyan, he f ound t here agroup of men wat er i ng [ t hei r f l ocks] , and besi des t hem he f ound t wo women whower e keepi ng back [ t hei r f l ocks] . He sai d: " What i s t he mat t er wi t h you?" They

    sai d: "We cannot wat er [ our f l ocks] unt i l t he shepher ds t ake back [ t hei rf l ocks] : And our f at her i s a ver y ol d man. "

    24. So he wat er ed [ t hei r f l ocks] f or t hem; t hen he t ur ned back t o t he shade, andsai d: O my Lor d! t r ul y am I i n [ desper at e] need of any good t hat Thou dost sendme! "

    25. Af t erwards one of t he [ damsel s] came [ back] t o hi m, wal ki ng bashf ul l y. Shesai d: " My f at her i nvi t es t hee t hat he may r eward t hee f or havi ng wat ered [ ourf l ocks] f or us. " So when he came t o hi m and nar r at ed t he st ory, he sai d: " Feart hou not : [ wel l ] hast t hou escaped f r om unj ust peopl e. "

    26. Sai d one of t he [ damsel s] : " O my [ dear ] f at her! engage hi m on wages: t r ul yt he best of men f or t hee t o empl oy i s t he [ man] who i s st r ong and t r ust y". . . .

    27. He sai d: " I i nt end t o wed one of t hese my daught er s t o t hee, on condi t i ont hat t hou ser ve me f or ei ght year s; but i f t hou compl et e t en year s, i t wi l l be[ gr ace] f r om t hee. But I i nt end not t o pl ace t hee under a di f f i cul t y: t hou wi l tf i nd me, i ndeed, i f Al l ah wi l l s , one of t he r i ght eous. "

    28. He sai d: " Be t hat [ t he agr eement ] bet ween me and t hee: whi chever of t he t wot er ms I f ul f i l , l et t her e be no i l l - wi l l t o me. Be Al l ah a wi t ness t o what wesay. "

    29. Now when Moses had f ul f i l l ed t he t erm, and was t r avel l i ng wi t h hi s f ami l y,he per cei ved a f i r e i n t he di r ect i on of Mount Tur . He sai d t o hi s f ami l y: "Tar r yye; I per cei ve a f i r e; I hope t o br i ng you f r om t her e some i nf ormat i on, or abur ni ng f i r ebr and, t hat ye may war m your sel ves. "

    30. But when he came t o t he [ f i r e] , a voi ce was hear d f r om t he r i ght bank of t heval l ey, f r om a t r ee i n hal l owed gr ound: "O Moses! Ver i l y I am Al l ah, t he Lor d oft he Wor l ds . . . .

    31. " Now do t hou t hrow t hy r od! " but when he saw i t movi ng [ of i t s own accord]as i f i t had been a snake, he t ur ned back i n r et r eat , and r et r aced not hi sst eps: O Moses! " [ I t was sai d] , "Dr aw near , and f ear not : f or t hou ar t of t hosewho ar e secur e.

    32. " Move t hy hand i nt o t hy bosom, and i t wi l l come f ort h whi t e wi t hout st ai n[ or har m] , and dr aw t hy hand cl ose t o t hy si de [ t o guard] agai nst f ear . Thosear e t he t wo cr edent i al s f r om t hy Lor d t o Phar aoh and hi s Chi ef s: f or t r ul y t heyare a peopl e r ebel l i ous and wi cked. "

    33. He sai d: " O my Lor d! I have sl ai n a man among t hem, and I f ear l est t heysl ay me.

    34. " And my br ot her Aaron - He i s more el oquent i n speech t han I : so send hi mwi t h me as a hel per , t o conf i r m [ and st r engt hen] me: f or I f ear t hat t hey mayaccuse me of f al sehood. "

    36. When Moses came t o t hem wi t h Our cl ear si gns, t hey sai d: " Thi s i s not hi ngbut sor cery f aked up: never di d we head t he l i ke among our f at her s of ol d! "

    37. Moses sai d: " My Lor d knows best who i t i s t hat comes wi t h gui dance f r om Hi mand whose end wi l l be best i n the Her eaf t er : cer t ai n i t i s t hat t he wr ong- doer swi l l not prosper . "

    38. Phar aoh sai d: " O Chi ef s! no god do I know f or you but mysel f : t her ef ore, OHaman! l i ght me a [ ki l n t o bake br i cks] out of cl ay, and bui l d me a l of t y

    pal ace, t hat I may mount up t o t he god of Moses: but as f ar as I am concerned, It hi nk [Moses] i s a l i ar ! "

    39. And he was ar r ogant and i nsol ent i n t he l and, beyond r eason, - He and hi shost s: t hey t hought t hat t hey woul d not have t o r et ur n t o Us!

    40. So We sei zed hi m and hi s host s, and We f l ung t hem i nt o t he sea: Now behol dwhat was t he end of t hose who di d wr ong!

    41. And we made t hem [ but ] l eader s i nvi t i ng t o t he Fi r e; and on t he Day of J udgment no hel p shal l t hey f i nd.

    42. i n t hi s wor l d We made a cur se t o f ol l ow t hem and on t he Day of J udgment t heywi l l be among t he l oat hed [ and despi sed] .

    43. We di d r eveal t o Moses t he Book af t er We had dest r oyed t he earl i ergener at i ons, [ t o gi ve] I nsi ght t o men, and gui dance and Mercy, t hat t hey mi ghtr ecei ve admoni t i on.

    44. Thou wast not on t he West er n si de when We decr eed t he Commi ss i on t o Moses,nor wast t hou a wi t ness [ of t hose event s] .

    45. But We r ai sed up [ new] gener at i ons, and l ong were t he ages t hat passed over

    t hem; but t hou wast not a dwel l er among t he peopl e of Madyan, r ehear si ng OurSi gns t o t hem; but i t i s We Who send messenger s [ wi t h i nspi r at i on] .

    46. Nor wast t hou at t he si de of [ t he Mount ai n of ] Tur when we cal l ed [ t oMoses] . Yet [ ar t t hou sent ] as Mer cy f r om t hy Lord, t o gi ve war ni ng t o a peopl et o whom no warner had come bef or e t hee: i n or der t hat t hey may recei veadmoni t i on.

    47. I f [ We had] not [ sent t hee t o t he Qur ai sh] , - i n case a cal ami t y shoul d sei zet hem f or [ t he deeds] t hat t hei r hands have sent f or t h, t hey mi ght say: "OurLor d! why di dst Thou not sent us a messenger ? We shoul d t hen have f ol l owed ThySi gns and been amongst t hose who bel i eve! "

    48. But [ now] , when t he Tr ut h has come t o t hem f r om Ours el ves, t hey say, " Whyare not [ Si gns] sent t o hi m, l i ke t hose whi ch were sent t o Moses?" Do t hey not

    t hen r ej ect [ t he Si gns] whi ch were f ormerl y sent t o Moses? They say: " Two ki ndsof sor cer y, each assi st i ng t he ot her ! " And t hey say: "For us, we rej ect al l[ such t hi ngs] ! "

    49. Say: " Then br i ng ye a Book f r om Al l ah, whi ch i s a bet t er gui de t han ei t herof t hem, t hat I may f ol l ow i t ! [ do] , i f ye ar e t r ut hf ul ! "

    50. But i f t hey hear ken not t o t hee, know t hat t hey onl y f ol l ow t hei r own l ust s:and who i s more ast r ay t han one who f ol l ow hi s own l ust s, devoi d of gui dancef r om Al l ah? f or Al l ah gui des not peopl e gi ven t o wr ong- doi ng.

    51. Now have We caused t he Wor d t o r each t hem t hemsel ves, i n or der t hat t hey mayr ecei ve admoni t i on.

    52. Those t o whom We sent t he Book bef ore t hi s, - t hey do bel i eve i n t hi s[ r evel at i on] :

    53. And when i t i s r eci t ed t o t hem, t hey say: "We bel i eve t her ei n, f or i t i s t he Tr ut h f r om our Lor d: i ndeed we have been Musl i ms [ bowi ng t o Al l ah' s Wi l l ] f r ombef ore thi s .

    54. Twi ce wi l l t hey be gi ven t hei r r ewar d, f or t hat t hey have per sever ed, t hatt hey avert Evi l wi t h Good, and t hat t hey spend [ i n char i t y] out of what We havegi ven t hem.

    55. And when t hey hear vai n t al k, t hey t ur n away t heref r om and say: " To us ourdeeds, and t o you your s; peace be t o you: we seek not t he i gnor ant . "

    57. They say: " I f we were t o f ol l ow t he gui dance wi t h t hee, we shoul d besnat ched away f r om our l and. " Have We not est abl i shed f or t hem a secur esanct uar y, t o whi ch ar e br ought as t r i but e f r ui t s of al l ki nds, - a pr ovi si onf r om Our sel ves? but most of t hem under st and not .

    58. And how many popul at i ons We dest r oyed, whi ch exul t ed i n t hei r l i f e [ of easeand pl ent y] ! now t hose habi t at i ons of t hei r s, af t er t hem, ar e deser t ed, - Al l buta [ mi serabl e] f ew! and We ar e t hei r hei r s!

    59. Nor was t hy Lor d t he one t o dest r oy a popul at i on unt i l He had sent t o i t scent r e a messenger, r ehear si ng t o t hem Our Si gns; nor are We goi ng t o dest r oy apopul at i on except when i t s member s pract i se i ni qui t y.

    60. The [ mat er i al ] t hi ngs whi ch ye ar e gi ven ar e but t he conveni ences of t hi sl i f e and t he gl i t t er t her eof ; but t hat whi ch i s wi t h Al l ah i s bet t er and mor eendur i ng: wi l l ye not t hen be wi se?

    61. Ar e [ t hese t wo] al i ke?- one t o whom We have made a goodl y promi se, and whoi s goi ng t o reach i t s [ f ul f i l ment ] , and one t o whom We have gi ven t he goodt hi ngs of t hi s l i f e, but who, on t he Day of J udgment , i s t o be among t hosebrought up [ f or puni shment ] ?

    62. That Day [ Al l ah] wi l l cal l t o t hem, and say "Wher e ar e my ' par t ner s' ?- whomye i magi ned [ t o be such] ?"

    63. Those agai nst whom t he charge wi l l be pr oved, wi l l say: " Our Lor d! These ar et he ones whom we l ed ast r ay: we l ed t hem ast r ay, as we were ast r ay our sel ves: wef r ee our sel ves [ f r om t hem] i n Thy pr esence: i t was not us t hey worshi pped. "

    64. I t wi l l be sai d [ t o t hem] : "Cal l upon your ' par t ner s ' [ f or hel p] " : t hey wi l lcal l upon t hem, but t hey wi l l not l i st en t o t hem; and t hey wi l l see the Penal t y[ bef ore t hem] ; [ how t hey wi l l wi sh] ' i f onl y t hey had been open t o gui dance! '

    65. That Day [ Al l ah] wi l l cal l t o t hem, and say: " What was t he answer ye gave t ot he messenger s? "

    66. Then t he [ whol e] st or y that Day wi l l seem obscur e to t hem [ l i ke l i ght t o thebl i nd] and they wi l l not be abl e [ even] t o quest i on each other .

    67. But any t hat [ i n t hi s l i f e] had r epent ed, bel i eved, and wor kedr i ght eousness, wi l l have hopes t o be among t hose who achi eve sal vat i on.

    68. Thy Lord does cr eat e and choose as He pl eases: no choi ce have t hey [ i n t hemat t er ] : Gl or y t o Al l ah! and f ar i s He above t he par t ner s t hey ascr i be [t o Hi m] !

    69. And t hy Lor d knows al l t hat t hei r hear t s conceal and al l t hat t hey reveal .

    70. And He i s Al l ah: Ther e i s no god but He. To Hi m be pr ai se, at t he f i r st andat t he l ast : f or Hi m i s t he Command, and t o Hi m shal l ye [ al l ] be br ought back.

    71. Say: See ye? I f Al l ah were t o make t he ni ght perpet ual over you t o t he Day

    of J udgment , what god i s t here ot her t han Al l ah, who can gi ve you enl i ght enment ?Wi l l ye not t hen hear ken?

    72. Say: See ye? I f Al l ah were t o make t he day perpet ual over you t o t he Day of J udgment , what god i s t her e ot her t han Al l ah, who can gi ve you a ni ght i n whi chye can rest ? Wi l l ye not t hen see?

    73. I t i s out of Hi s Mercy t hat He has made f or you Ni ght and Day, - t hat ye mayr est t herei n, and t hat ye may seek of hi s Gr ace; - and i n or der t hat ye may begr at ef ul .

    74. The Day t hat He wi l l cal l on t hem, He wi l l say: " Wher e ar e my ' par t ners' ?whom ye i magi ned [ t o be such] ?"

    75. And f r om each peopl e shal l We dr aw a wi t ness, and We shal l say: " Produceyour Proof ": t hen shal l t hey know t hat t he Truth i s i n Al l ah [ al one] , and t he[ l i es] whi ch t hey i nvent ed wi l l l eave t hem i n l ur ch.

    76. Qarun was doubt l ess, of t he peopl e of Moses; but he act ed i nsol ent l y t owardst hem: such were t he t r easur es We had best owed on hi m t hat t hei r ver y keys woul dhave been a burden t o a body of st r ong men, behol d, hi s peopl e sai d t o hi m:"Exul t not , f or Al l ah l ovet h not t hose who exul t [ i n r i ches] .

    77. " But seek, wi t h t he [ weal t h] whi ch Al l ah has best owed on t hee, t he Home oft he Her eaf t er , nor f or get t hy por t i on i n t hi s wor l d: but do t hou good, as Al l ahhas been good t o t hee, and seek not [ occasi ons f or] mi schi ef i n t he l and: f orAl l ah l oves not t hose who do mi schi ef . "

    78. He sai d: " Thi s has been gi ven t o me because of a cer t ai n knowl edge whi ch Ihave. " Di d he not know t hat Al l ah had dest r oyed, bef or e hi m, [ whol e]gener at i ons, - whi ch wer e super i or t o hi m i n st r engt h and gr eat er i n t he amount[ of r i ches] t hey had col l ect ed? but t he wi cked ar e not cal l ed[ i mmedi at el y] t oaccount f or t hei r s i ns .

    79. So he went f or t h among hi s peopl e i n t he [ pr i de of hi s wor l dl y] gl i t t er .Sai d t hose whose ai m i s t he Li f e of t hi s Wor l d: " Oh! t hat we had t he l i ke ofwhat Qar un has got ! f or he i s t r ul y a l ord of mi ght y good f ort une! "

    80. But t hose who had been gr ant ed [ t r ue] knowl edge sai d: " Al as f or you! Ther ewar d of Al l ah [ i n t he Her eaf t er ] i s best f or t hose who bel i eve and workr i ght eousness: but t hi s none shal l at t ai n, save t hose who st eadf ast l y per sever e[ i n good] . "

    81. Then We caused t he ear t h t o swal l ow up hi m and hi s house; and he had not[ t he l east l i t t l e] par t y to hel p hi m agai nst Al l ah, nor coul d he def end hi msel f .

    82. And t hose who had envi ed hi s posi t i on t he day bef or e began t o say on t hemor r ow: "Ah! i t i s i ndeed Al l ah Who enl ar ges t he pr ovi si on or r est r i ct s i t , t o

    any of Hi s ser vant s He pl eases! had i t not been t hat Al l ah was graci ous t o us,He coul d have caused t he eart h t o swal l ow us up! Ah! t hose who r ej ect Al l ah wi l lassur edl y never pr osper . "

    83. That Home of t he Hereaf t er We shal l gi ve t o t hose who i nt end not hi gh-handedness or mi schi ef on ear t h: and t he end i s [ best ] f or t he r i ght eous.

    84. I f any does good, t he rewar d t o hi m i s bet t er t han hi s deed; but i f any doesevi l , t he doer s of evi l ar e onl y puni shed [ t o t he ext ent ] of t hei r deeds.

    85. Veri l y He Who or dai ned t he Qur ' an f or t hee, wi l l br i ng t hee back t o t hePl ace of Ret ur n. Say: " My Lor d knows best who i t i s t hat br i ngs t r ue gui dance,and who i s i n mani f est er r or . "

    86. And t hou hadst not expect ed t hat t he Book woul d be sent t o t hee except as aMercy f r om t hy Lor d: Theref or e l end not t hou suppor t i n any way t o t hose whor ej ect [ Al l ah' s Message] .87. And l et not hi ng keep t hee back f r om t he Si gns of Al l ah af t er t hey have beenr eveal ed t o t hee: and i nvi t e [ men] t o t hy Lor d, and be not of t he company oft hose who j oi n gods wi t h Al l ah.

    4. Do those who pr act i se evi l t hi nk that t hey wi l l get t he bet t er of Us? Evi l i st hei r j udgment !

    5. For t hose whose hopes are i n t he meet i ng wi t h Al l ah [ i n t he Her eaf t er , l ett hem st r i ve] ; f or t he t er m [ appoi nt ed] by Al l ah i s sur el y comi ng and He hear sand knows [ al l t hi ngs] .

    6. And i f any st r i ve [ wi t h mi ght and mai n] , t hey do so f or t hei r own soul s: f orAl l ah i s f ree of al l needs f r om al l c reat i on.

    7. Those who bel i eve and work r i ght eous deeds, - f r om t hem shal l We bl ot out al levi l [ t hat may be] i n t hem, and We shal l r ewar d t hem accor di ng t o t he best of

    t hei r deeds.8. We have enj oi ned on man ki ndness t o parent s: but i f t hey [ ei t her of t hem]st r i ve [ t o f or ce] t hee t o j oi n wi t h Me [ i n wor shi p] anythi ng of whi ch t hou hastno knowl edge, obey t hem not . Ye have [ al l ] t o ret ur n t o me, and I wi l l t el l you[ t he t rut h] of al l t hat ye di d.

    9. And t hose who bel i eve and work r i ght eous deeds, - t hem shal l We admi t t o t hecompany of t he Ri ght eous.

    10. Then t her e are among men such as s ay, " We bel i eve i n Al l ah" ; but when t heysuf f er af f l i c t i on i n [ t he cause of ] Al l ah, t hey t r eat men' s oppr essi on as i f i twer e t he Wr at h of Al l ah! And i f hel p comes [ t o t hee] f r om t hy Lor d, t hey ar esur e t o say, " We have [ al ways] been wi t h you! " Does not Al l ah know best al l t hati s i n t he hear t s of al l creat i on?

    11. And Al l ah most cer t ai nl y knows t hose who bel i eve, and as cer t ai nl y t hose whoar e Hypocr i t es.

    12. And t he Unbel i ever s say t o t hose who bel i eve: " Fol l ow our pat h, and we wi l lbear [ t he consequences] of your f aul t s. " Never i n t he l east wi l l t hey bear t hei rf aul t s : i n f act t hey ar e l i ar s !

    13. They wi l l bear t hei r own bur dens, and [ ot her ] bur dens al ong wi t h t hei r own,and on t he Day of J udgment s t hey wi l l be cal l ed t o account f or t hei r f al sehoods.

    14. We [ once] sent Noah t o hi s peopl e, and he t ar r i ed among t hem a t housandyear s l ess f i f t y: but t he Del uge over whel med t hem whi l e t hey [ per si st ed i n] si n.

    15. But We saved hi m and t he compani ons of t he Ar k, and We made t he [ Ar k] a Si gnf or al l peopl es !

    16. And [ We al so saved] Abr aham: behol d, he sai d t o hi s peopl e, " Serve Al l ah andf ear Hi m: t hat wi l l be best f or you- I f ye under st and!

    17. " For ye do worshi p i dol s besi des Al l ah, and ye i nvent f al sehood. The t hi ngst hat ye wor shi p besi des Al l ah have no power t o gi ve you sust enance: t hen seek yesust enance f r om Al l ah, ser ve Hi m, and be gr at ef ul t o Hi m: t o Hi m wi l l be yourr et urn .

    18. " And i f ye r ej ect [ t he Message] , so di d gener at i ons bef ore you: and t he dut yof t he messenger i s onl y to pr each publ i cl y [and cl ear l y]. "

    20. Say: " Travel t hr ough t he ear t h and see how Al l ah di d ori gi nat e cr eat i on; sowi l l Al l ah pr oduce a l at er creat i on: f or Al l ah has power over al l t hi ngs.

    21. " He puni shes whom He pl eases, and He gr ant s Mercy t o whom He pl eases, andt owar ds Hi m ar e ye t ur ned.

    22. "Not on ear t h nor i n heaven wi l l ye be abl e [ f l eei ng] t o f r ust r at e [ hi sPl an] , nor have ye, besi des Al l ah, any pr ot ect or or hel per . "

    23. Those who rej ect t he Si gns of Al l ah and t he Meet i ng wi t h Hi m [ i n t heHer eaf t er ] , - i t i s t hey who shal l despai r of My Mer cy: i t i s t hey who wi l l[ suf f er ] a most gr i evous Penal t y.

    24. So naught was t he answer of [ Abr aham' s] peopl e except t hat t hey sai d: " Sl ayhi m or bur n hi m. " But Al l ah di d save hi m f r om t he Fi r e. Ver i l y i n t hi s ar e Si gnsf or peopl e who bel i eve.

    25. And he sai d: "For you, ye have t aken [ f or wor shi p] i dol s besi des Al l ah, outof mut ual l ove and r egar d bet ween your sel ves i n t hi s l i f e; but on t he Day of

    J udgment ye shal l di sown each ot her and cur se each ot her : and your abode wi l l bet he Fi r e, and ye shal l have none t o hel p. "26. But Lut had f ai t h i n Hi m: He sai d: " I wi l l l eave home f or t he sake of myLor d: f or He i s Exal t ed i n Mi ght , and Wi se. "

    27. And We gave [ Abr aham] I saac and J acob, and or dai ned among hi s pr ogenyProphet hood and Revel at i on, and We gr ant ed hi m hi s r ewar d i n t hi s l i f e; and hewas i n t he Hereaf t er [ of t he company] of t he Ri ght eous.

    28. And [ r emember ] Lut : behol d, he sai d t o hi s peopl e: " Ye do commi t l ewdness,such as no peopl e i n Cr eat i on [ ever ] commi t t ed bef or e you.

    29. " Do ye i ndeed approach men, and cut of f t he hi ghway?- and pr act i sewi ckedness [ even] i n your counci l s?" But hi s peopl e gave no answer but t hi s:t hey sai d: "Br i ng us t he Wr at h of Al l ah i f t hou t el l est t he t r ut h. "

    30. He sai d: " O my Lor d! hel p Thou me agai nst peopl e who do mi schi ef ! "31. When Our Messenger s came t o Abr aham wi t h t he good news, t hey sai d: " We ar ei ndeed goi ng t o dest r oy t he peopl e of t hi s t ownshi p: f or t r ul y t hey ar e[ addi ct ed t o] cri me. "

    32. He sai d: " But t her e i s Lut t here. " They sai d: " Wel l do we know who i s t her e: we wi l l cer t ai nl y save hi m and hi s f ol l owi ng, - except hi s wi f e: she i s oft hose who l ag behi nd! "

    33. And when Our Messenger s came t o Lut , he was gr i eved on t hei r account , andf el t hi msel f power l ess [ t o pr otect ] t hem: but t hey sai d: " Fear t hou not , norgr i eve: we ar e [ her e] t o save t hee and thy f ol l owi ng, except t hy wi f e: she i s oft hose who l ag behi nd.

    34. " For we ar e goi ng t o br i ng down on t he peopl e of t hi s t ownshi p a Puni shmentf r om heaven, because t hey have been wi ckedl y r ebel l i ous. "

    35. And We have l ef t t her eof an evi dent Si gn, f or any peopl e who [ car e t o]unders t and.

    36. To t he Madyan [ peopl e] [ We sent ] t hei r brot her Shu' ai b. Then he sai d: " O mypeopl e! s erve Al l ah, and f ear t he Last Day: nor commi t evi l on t he ear t h, wi t hi nt ent t o do mi schi ef . "

[ Remember al so] t he ' Ad and t he Thamud [ peopl e] : cl ear l y wi l l appear t o youf r om [ t he t r aces] of t hei r bui l di ngs [ t hei r f at e] : t he Evi l One made t hei r deedsal l ur i ng t o t hem, and kept t hem back f r om t he Pat h, t hough t hey wer e gi f t ed wi t hi nt el l i gence and ski l l .

    39. [ Remember al so] Qar un, Phar aoh, and Haman: t her e came t o t hem Moses wi t hCl ear Si gns, but t hey behaved wi t h i nsol ence on t he eart h; yet t hey coul d notover r each [ Us] .

    40. Each one of t hem We sei zed f or hi s cr i me: of t hem, agai nst some We sent avi ol ent t ornado [ wi t h shower s of st ones] ; some were caught by a [ mi ght y] Bl ast ;some We caused t he ear t h t o swal l ow up; and some We dr owned [ i n t he wat er s] : I twas not Al l ah Who i nj ur ed [ or oppr essed] t hem: " They i nj ur ed [ and oppr essed]t hei r own soul s.

    41. The parabl e of t hose who t ake pr ot ect ors ot her t han Al l ah i s t hat of t hespi der , who bui l ds [ t o i t sel f ] a house; but t r ul y the f l i msi est of houses i s t hespi der ' s house; - i f t hey but knew.

    42. Veri l y Al l ah dot h know of [ ever y t hi ng] what ever t hat t hey cal l upon besi desHi m: and He i s Exal t ed [ i n power ] , Wi se.

    43. And such ar e t he Parabl es We set f or t h f or manki nd, but onl y t hoseunder st and t hem who have knowl edge.

    44. Al l ah cr eat ed t he heavens and t he ear t h i n t r ue [ pr oport i ons] : ver i l y i nt hat i s a Si gn f or t hose who bel i eve.

    45. Reci t e what i s sent of t he Book by i nspi r at i on t o t hee, and est abl i shr egul ar Pr ayer : f or Pr ayer r est r ai ns f r om shamef ul and unj ust deeds; andr emembr ance of Al l ah i s t he gr eat est [ t hi ng i n l i f e] wi t hout doubt . And Al l ahknows t he [ deeds] t hat ye do.

    46.     47. And t hus [ i t i s] t hat We have sent down t he Book t o t hee. So t he Peopl e oft he Book bel i eve t her ei n, as al so do some of t hese [ pagan Ar abs] : and none butUnbel i ever s r ej ect our si gns.

    48. And t hou wast not [ abl e] t o reci t e a Book bef ore t hi s [ Book came] , nor ar tt hou [ abl e] t o tr anscri be i t wi t h t hy ri ght hand: I n t hat case, i ndeed, woul dt he t al ker s of vani t i es have doubt ed.

    49. Nay, her e ar e Si gns sel f - evi dent i n t he hear t s of t hose endowed wi t hknowl edge: and none but t he unj ust r ej ect Our Si gns.

    50. Ye t hey say: " Why ar e not Si gns sent down t o hi m f r om hi s Lor d?" Say: " Thesi gns ar e i ndeed wi t h Al l ah: and I am i ndeed a cl ear War ner. "

    51. And i s i t not enough f or t hem t hat we have sent down t o t hee t he Book whi chi s r ehear sed t o t hem? Ver i l y, i n i t i s Mercy and a Remi nder t o t hose whobel i eve.

    52. Say: " Enough i s Al l ah f or a wi t ness bet ween me and you: He knows what i s i nt he heavens and on ear t h. And i t i s t hose who bel i eve i n vani t i es and r ej ectAl l ah, t hat wi l l per i sh [ i n t he end] .

    55. On t he Day t hat t he Puni shment shal l cover t hem f r om above t hem and f r ombel ow t hem, and [ a Voi ce] shal l say: "Tast e ye [ t he f r ui t s] of your deeds! "

    59. Those who per sever e i n pat i ence, and put t hei r t r ust , i n t hei r Lord andCher i sher .

    60. How many ar e t he creat ur es t hat car r y not t hei r own sust enance? I t i s Al l ahwho f eeds [ bot h] t hem and you: f or He hear s and knows [ al l t hi ngs] .

    61. I f i ndeed t hou ask t hem who has cr eat ed t he heavens and t he ear t h andsubj ect ed t he sun and t he moon [ t o hi s Law] , t hey wi l l cer t ai nl y r epl y, " Al l ah".How ar e t hey t hen del uded away [ f r om t he t r ut h] ?

    62. Al l ah enl ar ges t he sust enance [ whi ch He gi ves] t o whi chever of Hi s ser vant sHe pl eases; and He [ si mi l ar l y] grant s by [ st r i ct ] measur e, [ as He pl eases] : f orAl l ah has f ul l knowl edge of al l t hi ngs.

    63. And i f i ndeed t hou ask t hem who i t i s t hat sends down r ai n f r om t he sky, andgi ves l i f e t her ewi t h t o t he ear t h af t er i t s deat h, t hey wi l l cer t ai nl y r epl y," Al l ah! " Say, " Pr ai se be t o Al l ah! " But most of t hem under st and not .

    18. Yea, t o Hi m be pr ai se, i n t he heavens and on ear t h; and i n t he l at eaf t ernoon and when t he day begi ns t o decl i ne.

    19. I t i s He Who br i ngs out t he l i vi ng f r om t he dead, and br i ngs out t he deadf r om t he l i vi ng, and Who gi ves l i f e t o t he ear t h af t er i t i s dead: and t husshal l ye be br ought out [ f r om t he dead] .

    20. Among Hi s Si gns i n t hi s, t hat He cr eat ed you f r om dust ; and t hen, - behol d,ye are men scat t ered [ f ar and wi de] !

    23. And among Hi s Si gns i s t he sl eep t hat ye t ake by ni ght and by day, and t hequest t hat ye [ make f or l i vel i hood] out of Hi s Bount y: ver i l y i n t hat ar e si gnsf or t hose who hear ken.

    24. And among Hi s Si gns, He shows you t he l i ght ni ng, by way bot h of f ear and ofhope, and He sends down r ai n f r om t he sky and wi t h i t gi ves l i f e t o t he ear t haf t er i t i s dead: ver i l y i n t hat ar e Si gns f or t hose who ar e wi se.

    25. And among Hi s Si gns i s t hi s, t hat heaven and ear t h st and by Hi s Command:t hen when He cal l s you, by a si ngl e cal l , f r om t he ear t h, behol d, ye[ st r ai ght way] come f or t h.

    26. To Hi m bel ongs ever y bei ng t hat i s i n t he heavens and on eart h: al l aredevout l y obedi ent t o Hi m.

    29. Nay, t he wr ong- doer s [ mer el y] f ol l ow t hei r own l ust s, bei ng devoi d ofknowl edge. But who wi l l gui de t hose whom Al l ah l eaves ast r ay? To t hem t here wi l lbe no hel per s.

    30.     33. When t r oubl e t ouches men, t hey cry t o t hei r Lord, t ur ni ng back t o Hi m i nr epent ance: but when He gi ves t hem a t ast e of Mer cy as f r om Hi msel f , behol d,some of t hem pay par t - wor shi p to ot her god' s besi des t hei r Lor d, -

    34. [ As i f ] t o show t hei r i ngr at i t ude f or t he [ f avour s] We have best owed ont hem! Then enj oy [ your br i ef day]; but soon wi l l ye know [ your f ol l y] .

    35. Or have We sent down aut hor i t y t o t hem, whi ch poi nt s out t o t hem t he t hi ngst o whi ch t hey pay par t - wor shi p?

    36. When We gi ve men a t ast e of Mer cy, t hey exul t t her eat : and when some evi laf f l i ct s t hem because of what t hei r [ own] hands have sent f or t h, behol d, t heyar e i n despai r !

    41. Mi schi ef has appear ed on l and and sea because of [ t he meed] t hat t he handsof men have ear ned, t hat [ Al l ah] may gi ve t hem a t ast e of some of t hei r deeds:i n or der t hat t hey may turn back [ f r om Evi l ] .

    42. Say: " Travel t hr ough t he eart h and see what was t he end of t hose bef or e[ you] : Most of t hem wor shi pped ot her s besi des Al l ah. "

    43. But set t hou t hy f ace t o t he r i ght Rel i gi on bef or e ther e come f r om Al l ah t heDay whi ch t here i s no chance of avert i ng: on t hat Day shal l men be di vi ded [ i nt wo] .

    44. Those who r ej ect Fai t h wi l l suf f er f r om t hat r ej ect i on: and t hose who wor kr i ght eousness wi l l spr ead t hei r couch [ of r epose] f or t hemsel ves [ i n heaven] :

    45. That He may rewar d t hose who bel i eve and wor k r i ght eous deeds, out of hi sBount y. For He l oves not t hose who rej ect Fai t h.46. Among Hi s Si gns i s t hi s, t hat He sends t he Wi nds, as heral ds of Gl ad

    47. We di d i ndeed send, bef ore t hee, messenger s t o t hei r [ r espect i ve] peopl es,and t hey came t o t hem wi t h Cl ear Si gns: t hen, t o t hose who t r ansgressed, Wemet ed out Ret r i but i on: and i t was due f r om Us t o ai d t hose who bel i eved.

    48. I t i s Al l ah Who sends t he Wi nds, and t hey r ai se t he Cl ouds: t hen does Hespr ead t hem i n t he sky as He wi l l s, and br eak t hem i nt o f r agment s, unt i l t houseest r ai n- dr ops i ssue f r om t he mi dst t hereof : t hen when He has made t hem r eachsuch of hi s ser vant s as He wi l l s behol d, t hey do r ej oi ce! -

    49. Even t hough, bef or e t hey recei ved [ t he r ai n] - j ust bef or e thi s - t hey wer edumb wi t h despai r !

    50. Then cont empl at e [ O man! ] t he memor i al s of Al l ah' s Mercy! - how He gi ves l i f et o t he ear t h af t er i t s deat h: ver i l y the same wi l l gi ve l i f e t o the men who ar edead: f or He has power over al l t hi ngs.

    51. And i f We [ but ] send a Wi nd f r om whi ch t hey see [ t hei r t i l t h] t ur n yel l ow, -behol d, t hey become, t her eaf t er , Ungr at ef ul [ Unbel i ever s] !

    52. So ver i l y t hou canst not make t he dead t o hear , nor canst t hou make t he deaft o hear t he cal l , when t hey show t hei r backs and t ur n away.

    53. Nor canst t hou l ead back t he bl i nd f r om t hei r st r ayi ng: onl y t hose wi l t t houmake t o hear , who bel i eve i n Our si gns and submi t [ t hei r wi l l s i n I sl am] .

    54. I t i s Al l ah Who creat ed you i n a st at e of [ hel pl ess] weakness, t hen gave[ you] st r engt h af t er weakness, t hen, af t er st r engt h, gave [ you weakness and ahoary head: He cr eat es as He wi l l s, and i t i s He Who has al l knowl edge andpower .

    55. On t he Day t hat t he Hour [ of Reckoni ng] wi l l be est abl i shed, t het r ansgressors wi l l swear t hat t hey t ar r i ed not but an hour : t hus wer e t hey usedt o bei ng del uded!

    57. So on t hat Day no excuse of t hei r s wi l l avai l t he t r ansgr essors, nor wi l lt hey be i nvi t ed [ t hen] t o seek gr ace [ by repent ance] .

    58. ver i l y We have propounded f or men, i n t hi s Qur' an every ki nd of Par abl e: Buti f t hou br i ng t o t hem any Si gn, t he Unbel i ever s are sur e t o say, "Ye do not hi ngbut t al k vani t i es . "

    59. Thus does Al l ah seal up t he hear t s of t hose who unders t and not .

    60. So pat i ent l y per sever e: f or ver i l y t he pr omi se of Al l ah i s t r ue: nor l ett hose shake t hy f i r mness, who have [ t hemsel ves] no cer t ai nt y of f ai t h.

    SURA 31. Luqman (the Wise)

    1. Al i f , Lam, Mi m.

    2. These ar e Ver ses of t he Wi se Book, -

    3. A Gui de and a Mer cy t o t he Doer s of Good, -4. Those who est abl i sh r egul ar Prayer , and gi ve r egul ar Char i t y, and have [ i nt hei r hear t s] t he assur ance of t he Her eaf t er .

    5. These are on [ t r ue] gui dance f r om t hei r Lord: and t hese ar e t he ones who wi l lpr osper .

    6. But t her e ar e, among men, t hose who pur chase i dl e t al es, wi t hout knowl edge[ or meani ng] , t o mi sl ead [ men] f r om t he Pat h of Al l ah and t hr ow r i di cul e [ on t hePat h] : f or such t her e wi l l be a Humi l i at i ng Penal t y.

    7. When Our Si gns ar e r ehear sed t o such a one, he t ur ns away i n ar r ogance, as i fhe heard t hem not , as i f t her e wer e deaf ness i n bot h hi s ear s: announce t o hi m agr i evous Penal t y.

    8. For t hose who bel i eve and work r i ght eous deeds, t her e wi l l be Gardens ofBl i ss, -

    9. To dwel l t her ei n. The pr omi se of Al l ah i s t r ue: and He i s Exal t ed i n Power ,Wi se.

    10. He cr eat ed t he heavens wi t hout any pi l l ar s t hat ye can see; He set on t heear t h mount ai ns st andi ng f i r m, l est i t shoul d shake wi t h you; and He scat t er edt hr ough i t beast s of al l ki nds. We send down rai n f r om t he sky, and pr oduce ont he ear t h ever y ki nd of nobl e cr eat ur e, i n pai r s.

    11. Such i s t he Cr eat i on of Al l ah: now show Me what i s t her e t hat ot hers besi desHi m have cr eat ed: nay, but t he Tr ansgr essor s are i n mani f est er r or .

    12. we best owed [ i n t he past ] Wi sdom on Luqman: " Show [ t hy] gr at i t ude t o Al l ah. "

    Any who i s [ so] gr at ef ul does so t o the pr of i t of hi s own soul : but i f any i sungr at ef ul , ver i l y Al l ah i s f r ee of al l want s , Wor t hy of al l pr ai se.

    13. Behol d, Luqman sai d t o hi s son by way of i nst r uct i on: " O my son! j oi n not i nwor shi p [ other s] wi t h Al l ah: f or f al se wor shi p i s i ndeed t he hi ghest wr ong-doi ng. "

    16. " O my son! " [ sai d Luqman] , " I f t her e be [ but ] t he wei ght of a must ard- seed

    and i t wer e [ hi dden] i n a rock, or [ anywher e] i n t he heavens or on ear t h, Al l ahwi l l br i ng i t f or t h: f or Al l ah under st ands t he f i nest myst er i es , [ and] i s wel l -acquai nt ed [ wi t h t hem] .

    17. "O my son! est abl i sh r egul ar pr ayer , enj oi n what i s j ust , and f orbi d what i swr ong: and bear wi t h pat i ent const ancy what ever bet i de t hee; f or t hi s i sf i r mness [ of pur pose] i n [ t he conduct of ] af f ai r s.

    18. " And swel l not t hy cheek [ f or pr i de] at men, nor wal k i n i nsol ence t hr ought he ear t h; f or Al l ah l ovet h not any ar r ogant boast er .

    19. " And be moderat e i n t hy pace, and l ower t hy voi ce; f or t he hars hest ofsounds wi t hout doubt i s t he br ayi ng of t he ass. "

    20. Do ye not see that Al l ah has subj ect ed t o your [ use] al l t hi ngs i n t heheavens and on ear t h, and has made hi s bount i es f l ow t o you i n exceedi ngmeasur e, [ bot h] seen and unseen? Yet t her e ar e among men t hose who di sput e aboutAl l ah, wi t hout knowl edge and wi t hout gui dance, and wi t hout a Book t o enl i ght ent hem!

    21. When t hey ar e t ol d t o f ol l ow t he [ Revel at i on] t hat Al l ah has sent down, t heysay: " Nay, we shal l f ol l ow t he ways t hat we f ound our f at her s [ f ol l owi ng] ." What ! even i f i t i s Sat an beckoni ng t hem t o t he Penal t y of t he [ Bl azi ng] Fi r e?

    25. I f t hou ask t hem, who i t i s t hat cr eat ed t he heavens and t he ear t h. Theywi l l cer t ai nl y say, "Al l ah". Say: "Prai se be t o Al l ah! " But most of t hemunder st and not .

    26. To Al l ah bel ong al l t hi ngs i n heaven and ear t h: ver i l y Al l ah i s He [ t hat i s]f r ee of al l want s , wor t hy of al l pr ai se.

    27. And i f al l t he t r ees on ear t h were pens and t he ocean [ were i nk] , wi t h sevenoceans behi nd i t t o add t o i t s [ suppl y] , yet woul d not t he words of Al l ah beexhaust ed [ i n t he wr i t i ng] : f or Al l ah i s Exal t ed i n Power , f ul l of Wi sdom.

    28. And your cr eat i on or your r esur r ect i on i s i n no wi se but as an i ndi vi dualsoul : f or Al l ah i s He Who hear s and sees [ al l t hi ngs] .

    29. Seest t hou not t hat Al l ah merges Ni ght i nt o Day and he merges Day i nt oNi ght ; t hat He has subj ect ed t he sun, and t he moon [ t o hi s Law] , each runni ngi t s cour se f or a t er m appoi nt ed; and t hat Al l ah i s wel l - acquai nt ed wi t h al l t hatye do?

    30. That i s because Al l ah i s t he [ onl y] Real i t y, and because what ever el se t heyi nvoke besi des Hi m i s Fal sehood; and because Al l ah, - He i s t he Most Hi gh, MostGr eat .
