English (Mr Gum) Maths (Shape) Connected Curriculum
(all week)
Mon Mr Gum’s favourite TV programme is ‘Bag of Sticks’,
which is a programme showing a bag of sticks for half
an hour. Can you think of some crazy ideas for a TV
show? Try to think of at least two.
Write the name of the show and what happens. E.g.
FIND THE CHAIR – a person has to wander
blindfolded round a room, trying to find a chair
SWEETS OR NOT? – contestants have to lick objects
such as shoes, doorknobs, pieces of paper and decide
if the object is made of sweets.
(Actually, these are both real programmes in Japan…)
Acute, obtuse and right angles
Watch the videos to learn about acute, obtuse
and right angles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7K4zztMXT0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RTM418qfdI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVuMULQjb3o
(angles song)
Look at Maths Resource 1 and decide if the
angles shown are acute, obtuse or right angles.
Put the corner of a ruler or piece of paper into
each angle if you are not sure.

extension on the Home Learning page
Geography (mapping skills)
See Geography Resource 1
Science (Plants)
If you have set up the seed
investigation (Science Resource 1),
look at your seed, draw it in the
appropriate box and measure the
length of the roots/stem.
Watch the following video. (It will
stop and ask you to login – just click
on ‘Try it for free’). https://www.generationgenius.com/videolessons/plant-growth-conditions-video-for-kids/
Click on ‘Discussion questions’ under
the video first and talk about them
with a partner. After the video,
try the online quiz game at the
bottom of the page.
Art
We drew trees as part of Book
Week. Try drawing a tree using Art
Resource 1 to help you.
or
Design a ‘Super Bear’ for the John
Lewis competition (see information
attached below)
Tue Read English Resource 1 (2 pages). On a blank piece
of paper, draw a picture of Polly’s journey, including
all the things she sees as she runs, including the place
she ends up. You may want to underline what she sees
to help you.
Draw accurately
See Maths Resource 2.
Wed Look at English Resource 2 which is a picture of a
dark, forbidding forest like the one Polly ends up in.
Tomorrow, you will be writing a description of it so
today, you will be thinking of ideas and planning your
writing. On the picture (or a piece of paper), write
some words and phrases to describe the forest.
Think about what Polly can see and hear. Try to
improve your vocabulary (e.g. creepy -> spine-chilling).
If you have a word-processing programme (e.g. Word),
there is usually a thesaurus tool in the ‘Review’
section, which can help with finding better words.
Horizontal and vertical lines
Look at Maths Resource 3, which shows the
names of different kinds of line.
Complete Maths Resource 4.
If you have any time afterwards, look for
horizontal and vertical lines in your house or
garden.

were…)
Try to make the forest sound as menacing as possible.

Fri VE Day
Watch the video to find out what VE Day is all about. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr
Look at pictures from VE Day to see how people
celebrated. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/inspire-me/ve-day/ve-day-in-pictures/
In 1945, people did not yet have televisions in their homes
and heard the news on the radio. Can you create a radio
broadcast announcing the news on VE Day? If possible,
record it on a device with a microphone.
Try to include:
Opening sentence (What has happened)
More details:
how are people feeling
what they are doing to celebrate
Closing sentence (a sentence to finish the broadcast)
There are also various programmes showing throughout
the day on the BBC.
A wordsearch is included in the resources below or you
could create a VE Day poster.
VE Day
People all over the country celebrated VE
Day by having street parties.
Use your weighing and measuring skills to
prepare something for your own tea party.
You could bake a cake (if you can get flour)
or make cookies (there are many flourless
recipes on the internet). If you are feeling
adventurous, try a recipe from the wartime
era. https://the1940sexperiment.com/100-wartime-recipes/
Parts of Winston Churchill’s speech will be
broadcast on the BBC at 3pm and people
are encouraged to have afternoon tea
parties after that, so why not eat
whatever you have baked then, while
listening to a playlist of World War II
songs?

Maths Resource 2
Following the instructions below, draw a 2d picture of a house (using a ruler).
Your house must:
1) have a floor measuring 18cm 5mm
2) have walls measuring 9cm
3) have a door with 4 right angles
4) have 2 windows, each with a perimeter of 16cm. (If you want an extra challenge,
make the windows different shapes.)
5) have a roof that has at least 1 obtuse angle and 2 acute angles
6) have a path outside that includes at least one obtuse angle
Label all the lines with measurements and label all the angles
(draw an arrow and write if they are acute, obtuse or right angles).
e.g.
right angle
18cm 5mm
9cm
I have not drawn the whole house, as I don’t want you just to copy mine!
Remember: the perimeter is the
distance round the outside of a
shape.
Perimeter = 5 + 5 + 2 + 2 = 14cm

Superbear competition
We’re launching a competition to find a superhero teddy bear, and we need your help designing it. The winning teddy will be sold in
John Lewis and Waitrose shops later this year, with 100% of the profits going to the NHS.
DESIGN YOUR TEDDY BEAR
In honour of our incredible carers at the NHS, we need designs for superhero-themed bears – don’t feel like you have to stick to
the traditional brown bear – we want to see all kinds of super teddies.
Try and incorporate unique elements through colours, patterns, capes, masks – whatever feels exciting for you, but please avoid
using any recognisable icons in your designs, such as the ‘NHS’ lettering or Superman logos.
HOW TO ENTER
Share your superhero teddy bear design with us by 5pm on 8 May 2020. An adult over the age of 18 should submit a photo of your
design in one of the following two ways:
Share your designs by email to: [email protected]
or posted through a public Instagram or Twitter account with the hashtag #DesignYourSuperBear
