HOW TO WRITE A LITERARY
ANALYSIS ESSAY
Firstly, lets look at the significance of analysing
literary texts
PURPOSEOThe purpose of literary
analysis essay is to
carefully examine and
sometimes evaluate a work
of literature or an aspect of
a work of literature.
WHY?OWhen studying literature,
students can learn not only language aspects such as vocabulary items but also that language can be used for specific and aesthetic purposes
THEREFORE…OThe study of literature can
provide students with a
fresh and creative angle
with which to approach their
studies in particular and
their lives in general
As with any analysis, this requires you to break the
subject down into its component parts
THE THREE COMPONENT PARTS OF AN ESSAY
O Your essay should consist of three parts:
O INTRODUCTION
O BODY
O CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTIONOThe first paragraph of your
essay is your introduction.
OThe introduction should
briefly explain what your
essay is about and what
you are going to say
BODYOThis is where your main points
should be.
OEach paragraph of the main body
should contain a relevant point
with a quotation and some
analysis.
OThe main body of the essay must
remain relevant to the question.
CONCLUSIONOThe conclusion is a brief summary
of all the points raised in the main
body of the essay.
ORemember, you should never add
anything new in your conclusion.
OThe conclusion should sum up what
you have written and prove that you
have answered your question.
