2. SOME VOCABULARIES ON PROMISE 1. I'll be there. I give you my word. [=I promise] You'd better keep your word. [=keep your promise to do something] He is a man of his word. = His word is his bond. [=he always keeps his promises] To get a rain check [ get a promise to do that thing at a future time ... ] Example: "I asked her to go out on a date, but it turns out she has a boyfriend. Reply: "Did you get a rain check?" Promise = pledge = swear = guarantee = oath = vow 3. EXAMPLE ON EXPRESSING PROMISE A: I need help preparing for my presentation on Friday. B: I could help you with that. A: Are you sure you have the time? B: I promise you that I have the time to do this. If I didn't, I wouldn't offer to help. A: What would be the best time for you to help me? B: Tomorrow night would work for me. A: Should we just meet here? B: OK, and I'll bring some information that helped me with my presentation. A: I'll see you then. B: See you tomorrow night. 4. A: Could you help me prepare for my presentation on Friday? B: I would love to help you prepare for your presentation. A: I hate to ask you to do something like that. B: This will not interfere with my work. I promise you that. A: When could we get together? B: I could easily give you some time tomorrow night. A: Would you like to meet at the coffee house next door? B: Yes, and could you write down anything you might be having trouble with? A: I'll come prepared. B: Goodbye until then. I promise you that you'll do well after we meet. 5. A: I AM A LITTLE NERVOUS ABOUT MY PRESENTATION ON FRIDAY. B: IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO, I COULD HELP YOU WITH THAT. A: WOULDN'T THAT TAKE YOU AWAY FROM YOUR PROJECT? B: I HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO DO THIS. I PROMISE YOU IT WON'T BE A PROBLEM FOR ME. A: IS THERE A GOOD TIME FOR YOU TO HELP ME? B: IF WE WORK ON THIS TOMORROW NIGHT, YOU COULD EASILY BE READY FOR FRIDAY. A: HOW ABOUT MEETING IN MY OFFICE? B: THAT WOULD WORK OUT WELL. BRING ANY CONCERNS THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE. A: SOUNDS LIKE YOU'LL BE ABLE TO HELP ME A LOT. B: DON'T WORRY. EVERYTHING WILL GO WELL. I PROMISE! 6. I PROMISE NOT TO + (VERB) When using the word 'promise' you are giving your word that what you are saying is true. You might also be assuring someone a guarantee that you will follow thru on what you are saying to them. When using 'promise not to' you are stating you will not do a particular thing. Here are some examples: "I promise not to tell. (saya janji tidak menceritakannya) "I promise not to leave without you. (saya janji tidak pergi tanpamu) "I promise not to be so late. (saya janji tidak terlambat) "I promise not to hurt your feelings. (saya janji tidak menyakiti perasaanmu) "I promise not to wake you up. (saya janji tidak membangunkanmu) 7. EXERCISE ONE 1. Saya janji tidak mengganggu pacarmu 2. Saya janji tidak membohongimu tentang masalah itu 3. Saya janji tidak menghilangkan handphonemu 4. Saya janji tidak bertengkar di dalam kelas 5. Saya janji tidak mencuri uang orang tua 6. Saya janji tidak datang terlambat 7. Saya janji tidak bermain game di sekolah 8. Saya janji tidak menonton film itu 9. Saya janji tidak menjual rumahmu 10. Saya janji tdak mencium bibirmu 8. You can also just use the word 'promise' to assure someone of your intentions. Here are some examples: "I promise I am telling the truth. (saya janji mengatakan sebenarnya) "I promise to practice my math. (saya janji berlatih matematika) "I promise to call you. (saya janji menghubungimu) "I promise I will tell you. (saya janji akan mengatakan kepadamu) "I promise I will come to your party. (saya janji akan datang ke pestamu) 9. EXERCISE TWO 1. Saya janji belajar giat di kelas XII 2. Saya janji akan mendengarkan perkataanmu 3. Saya janji akan selalu mencintaimu dengan tulus 4. Saya janji selalu datang tepat waktu 5. Saya janji menyelesaikan PR English di rumah 6. Saya janji akan datang ke rumahmu besok malam 7. Saya janji akan selalu menjemputmu dari sekolah 8. Saya janji selalu berdoa setiap hari 9. Saya janji akan menjalankan perintah-Mu 10. Saya janji akan meraih nilai terbaik dan membuatmu bangga padaku. 10. ASKING FOR A PROMISE (MEMINTA JANJI) 1. Promise me that you will get me all the water that I can drink 2. Do you promise to take care of the bird if we get one? 3. Make me promise, wont you? 4. I want you to promise that youll love me forever 5. Is that a promise? 6. Do you give me your word on that? 7. Do you swear that you wont forget me? 11. OFFERING A PROMISE (MEMBERIKAN JANJI) 1. I promise I will do whatever you want 2. i promise you that I will try to be on time next time 3. I promise to love you endlessly 4. It is a promise 5. I give you my word 6. You have my word on it 7. I swear that my love is only for you 12. SAMPLE DIALOGUE Dialogue 1 (situation : you have homework to do and you want to borrow your friends dictionary. But you have lost her note book last time and you promise to change your attitude) Dewi : Hi, Putri. I have an English homework to do tonight and I really need to borrow your dictionary for a day. Is it possible? Putri : I'm sorry Dewi, I can't, I am using it today and I have many activities to do, I dont have a time to talk right now. Dewi : But I cant finish my homework without it Putri. I know that will be angry with me because I lost your note book last time, but I promise to change my attitude. Putri : You said it too yesterday. Dewi : Please Putri, I swear this time, believe with me! Putri : Sorry I have many things to do today, I have to go, bye! Dewi : Bye and thank you anyway
