The island of Ireland is situated in the extreme north-west of Europe.

It is the third largest island in Europe lying between the Atlantic

Ocean and the Irish Sea. Ireland is a highly developed democracy

with a modern economy. It has a multi-national population of

approximately 4.5 million people. Overall, Ireland has a mild, but

changeable climate all year which is influenced by the relatively

warm waters from the Gulf Stream. May and June are the sunniest

months, averaging between five to seven hours of sunshine each

day. January and February are the coldest months when thetemperature on average varies between 4 and 7 degrees. We are

told that the country has 40 shades of green. There is no doubt

that this is as a result of the frequent rain showers for which this

Emerald isle is renowned! Ireland is known for its friendly people

who are always willing to help. The Irish welcoming spirit is known

all over the world. Ireland is one of the safest countries in Europe

    with a low crime rate.

Arts & CultureFor an island with a relatively small population, Ireland has made a

disproportionately large contribution to world literature, music, dance and sport. Also known as the country of 'Saints and

Scholars', the memory of Ireland's most beloved saint, St Patrick, is

celebrated with parades, song and theatre throughout Ireland and

in Irish communities worldwide on 17th March every year. Our

classical scholars include a host of famous novelists, playwrights

and poets such as: George Bernard Shaw, Synge, OCasey,

Sheridan, Oscar Wilde, Jonathan Swift, W.B. Yeats, Bram Stoker

and James Joyce. This proud tradition continues today with our

contemporary writers: John Banville, Roddy Doyle, Seamus Heaney,

and Brian Friel to name but a few. Ireland has also produced some

world-famous bands and singers: U2, The Cranberries and The

    Corrs, for example.

Places To Visit & Things To DoThere is no shortage of interesting places to visit and things to do

when you come to Ireland. You can explore the Irish countryside by

renting a car or taking an organised coach trip. The stunning cliffs of

Moher, Blarney Castle and the Hill of Tara are just some of the

attractions that will impress you. You can go hill-walking in the

Wicklow mountains or take advantage of the spectacular Irish coast

with its blue flag beaches to go windsurfing, sailing or canoeing.

Going horse riding or embarking on a cycling adventure through the

scenic countryside of Cork, Kerry and Donegal is also a must. At theend of the day there is an abundance of bars and restaurants that

cater for all tastes. You can choose between Irish, French, Italian,

Indian, Chinese and Spanish restaurants and many more besides!

Studying in England can be a great opportunity to explore and

understand a nation that has had a profound influence on the

modern world, particularly on business, politics, education,

entertainment, media and fashion. It is known far and wide for itsrich and colourful history. Places, people, buildings, monuments,

myths and legends all come together to tell us stories that fascinate

and inspire. From Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling, English literature

and art has fuelled the imagination throughout the world.

An exploration of England's countryside, from the ancient formations

of Stonehenge to Roman cities like Bath, as well as the plethora of

gothic cathedrals and mediaeval villages, provides insight into the

cultural legacy of the Romans, Saxons, Vikings, and other

civilisations. The Countryside provides a rich tapestry of diversesettings, from cosmopolitan cities to picturesque rural villages, from

scenic lakes and countryside to breath-taking coastlines and delivers

unending opportunities for activity and curiosity.

England has a strong sporting tradition, particularly in rugby, soccer

and cricket. In addition to Wembley Stadium and numerous other

sporting arenas, it is also home of the legendary Wimbledon tennis

tournament. England can boast of many world class athletes and

will host the Olympic and Paralympics games in 2012.

Its multicultural cities and towns are a testament to all the different

peoples who have met and mixed there over time. One aspect of

this is the prevalence of international cuisine. Few places in the

world can boast as international a population, meaning that you

can truly develop cross-cultural communication skills while still

    studying in an English-speaking environment.

At eCollege London we believe that the cultural experience is just as

important as the educational experience. So come to eCollege

London not just to learn English but to discover England!

In both of our schools we are delighted to be able to offer you every support possible to make the transition from home to either Dublin or

London as smooth as possible. Studying abroad is an exciting adventure as well as a major life transition. For many it will be the first

time away from home. While you may be looking forward to all the opportunities that come with living in an overseas country, you may

also feel apprehensive about the many unknowns. The Student Care team is available from 10.00 a.m. to 18.00 p.m. Monday to

Friday to help with any problems which you encounter. Please remember no problem is too big or too small. We hope that this service, which is confidential and free to students, will be helpful and that we will have the opportunity to get to know many of you.
