• Reviewed programs which integrate reading, writing, word knowledge, vocabulary, and speaking in 2014‐16 involving hundreds of staff stakeholders– Harcourt– Pearson– McGraw Hill– Benchmark Literacy– Units of Study by Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Project 

(TCRWP)

• Reviewed Step Up to Writing as a compliment to the adopted program

Writing ‐ Process

2015‐2016• Discovery Elementary piloted the Benchmark Literacy 

Program (integrated English Language Arts).

• Abingdon Elementary and other schools piloted either Lucy Units of Study in Writing by Lucy Calkins and Teachers College Reading and Writing Program (TCRWP) colleagues.

• APS staff provided families with an overview of the top two selected programs (Calkins and Step Up) followed by additional night events and open hours to allow for more families to review and provide feedback on the recommended programs.

small group work needed to teach opinion/argument, information, and narrative writing

• fosters high‐level thinking through regular chances to synthesize, analyze, and critique

• builds writing independence and fluency• provides a ladder of exemplar texts that model writing 

progressions across Grades K–8• develops and refines strategies for writing across the curriculum• Includes:

– strategic performance assessments to help monitor mastery and differentiate instruction

– rubrics and learning progressions– access to online videos
