English today• Nowadays about 400 million people speak English.• Nowadays English is second only to Chinese in the
number of people who speak it.• About 300 million people living in more than 60
countries speak English as a second language.• There were only 30,000 words in Old English.
Some people say there are about 600,000 words in Modern English.
• English is the language of technology and science, business and sport , official language of the Olympics , the official voice of the air and of the sea.
