After a very successful Book Week last week it has been a little
quieter this week with students getting back to ‘normal’ curriculum
lesson and many preparing for their forthcoming IGCSE
examinations. It was nice to see a large number of our parents in
school on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon for the parent’s
consultations. This is a very important opportunity for our parent
body to meet with subject teachers and learn how their children are
progressing. The ongoing support of parents is a vital link in the
education of all young people and something we value here at EIS
East.
On the theme of parental involvement we have recently launched an
online internet safety programme (Gooseberry Planet) with our Year
1 to Year 6 students. A letter has also been sent to these parents via
email explaining how they can monitor this and get involved with the
very important topic of internet safety. Please do logon to the site
and download the relevant app to keep abreast of your child’s
progress.
Ensuring that all our students have access to the teaching and
learning taking place at EIS east is one of our major goals here at
East. To enhance this provision 8 members of staff have embarked
upon a training course to enhance their delivery of lessons to
students who are second language learners. TheTESMC (Teaching
English to Second language learners in Mainstream Classrooms)
course is another example of our commitment to deliver the best
quality of education that we can to ALL our students here at East.
Next week is the last week of this term and we look forward to the
Primary School swimming gala on Wednesday and hope that many of
you can join us for this event.
On Tuesday a representative from Navarra University - of one of the highest ranking universities in Europe, Magdalena Gaete delivered a presentation to our secondary students on the differences in demands of professions among different generations and what our generation Z students need to expect when enrolling in different courses. In her speech she highlighted the importance of being a global citizen and challenged students with questions on what professions will be in demand in the near future" .
The focus in Year 7 History this term has been on Medieval Castles; from the early motte and bailey castles to the more modern concentric versions. To finish off the topic, the students were asked to recreate their own version of a Medieval Castle, including labels of the different features of their medieval castles along with a write up on the history of their castle. There were some fantastic castles created using a wide variety of materials and all included accurate labels and descriptions. It was a creative, informative and fun way to round off the term and the students should feel proud of the hard work that went into them.

Children from EYFS to Year 3 joined the Peg Boards club and created beautiful patterns and pictures while working together, sharing and taking turns.
The Lego Club (Est. September 2018!) is the longest running Secondary lunchtime activity at EIS and has proven to be as popular this term as it was when it was first established. This week we had something special to celebrate (other than the fact we have the most fun, obviously!) we received a new delivery of Lego sets to boost our existing stocks and you can see from the photos that they were very much appreciated.
Along with the Technic sets we received two kits that allow us to learn and to develop our skills not only in building, but also in coding – although, by the looks of things we are a long way off completion of that robot at the moment!
We now have more than enough sets to keep us all very busy, but just don’t let our secret out because we don’t want our club to become so popular that there are waiting lists for the really good stuff!
We will keep you up to date with the progress we make with our models…..when they’re finished!

Maxim and Roman have repeated the sounds that they were learning before. They drew the sea creatures with Sh sound in their names - shark, shells, fish, and couldn't leave whale (w-ai-l) behind. Roman and Maxim were really proud of their work, especially while they were writing the words and playing the sound buttons.
Phonics in Primary
Nursery and Reception
Year 5 Year 3 This week we have been learning all about division and multiplication in Maths. In English we have begun understanding and writing instructional texts. We had loads of fun following instructions and making a spinner. We even learnt how to use a protractor! In Topic we are learning all about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. In Science we have been learning about gases and air pressure. Have a lovely weekend. Along with the Year 4s, in PSHE, we learnt all about respecting people with disabilities. Have a lovely weekend, everyone
This week Nursery and Reception children learned the sound 'ch' and spoke about farm animals. They watched a video about how milk is made and how it comes from Moo to You. They discussed what hot chocolate is made from and enjoyed drinking it during snack time. They practised writing their names and joined big children in science investigations club talking about and testing what materials stick to a magnet.
In maths this weeks students placed mixed numbers on lines; counted up in fractions using equivalence; converted improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa; wrote improper fractions as mixed numbers and vice versa; multiplied proper fractions by whole numbers.
In English student conducted a debate with students arguing in teams their side of the topic of why animals should be used in scientific research. They then went on to write and share their own topics, which they chose, to write an argument about.
Year 1 and 2 Trip to Moskvarium
My trip to the Moskvarium
First we went to the bus and
drove to the Moskvarium. It
took 1 hour. We went
downstairs to give our tickets
to the lady. Then we looked
at lots of fish and I saw a red
lion fish, crab, whale and tur-
tle. I liked crabs the most
because they can cut every-
thing. After we went out of
the aquarium and had a pic-
nic. I ate sandwiches. I had a
fun day. Asmaa
We saw many things like star-
fishes. I liked the sharks the
most as they are my favourite.
I had a great time with my
friends.
Janis
I felt excited and happy because I
liked the fish. I also saw sharks.
Then we went on a dinosaur and
took pictures. I loved the day!
Nirel
We played rock, paper,
scissors on the bus.
Then we got off the bus
and went inside. I was
excited. Then we saw
many fish and a
clownfish and an
octopus. My favourite
was the octopus. We
had a picnic. I liked it.

Year 6
Eric year 9 recently performed at The Gryphon Award 2019 RBCC
independent schools Young Musician of the Year.
This week Year 6 have been stepping into the shoes of trainee astronauts, writing diary entries about what their rigorous training process would be like. They discussed the features of informal, personal writing and tried to use these in their own writing. In Maths, the focus was on data. They practised calculating the mean average from a set of data and also learned how to calculate the range. They also learned how to read distance-time graphs and conversion graphs. This led to an interesting discussion about currency exchange rates and hyperinflation! In Science, the students continued to learn about classifying animals. They learned about different animal classes and applied their knowledge to classify the strange creature that is the platypus, eventually deciding that it is a mammal. Next week promises to be very busy as well, starting on Monday with our Market Day as part of our enterprise project. Remember to send your child to school with some money if you they would like to buy some of the exciting products on offer!
Thank you to all the parents who came this week for Parent's Night. It was great to speak to you about your children, and decide on next steps in their learning! *In Maths, we have been learning to understand and solve word problems. This continues to be tricky, because we are having to read and figure out what is being asked of us before we can solve the problem. We have also looked at converting decimals to fractions, telling the time, and finding the difference between two times. *In English, we finished reading Cliffhanger. For many of us it was our first novel that we have every read, so we were very proud of ourselves for reading and understanding it. We continue to work on writing sentences that make sense and are grammatically correct. *In Science, we have been learning about how to spot underground springs and aquifers by using rocks, soil and plants as a guide. *In Topic, we have looked at how football has evolved over time to become the most popular sport in the world, and how the "Swinging Sixties" were an important decade for changing the way we approach leisure and entertainment.
Don't forget that Monday is the Year 5 and 6 Market Day! Please send some money with us so that we can buy their products.
