Some information about me

• This is my first year at XJTLU.• Before coming here, I taught at 2 universities in

Taiwan for 8 years, as Assistant Professor.• My academic background is in language and

linguistics.• My PhD, on spoken language analysis, was done

in the EECE Dept. at Birmingham, UK• I have been married to a Taiwanese woman,

Emily, for 16 years.• We have two boys, Owen (11) and Iain (6).

Classes with me• There are two types of class: • English for Fluency Class Work (today’s class)

– Materials: Oxford English for Information Technology and Cambridge English for Engineering.

– We will focus on general English for Engineering, looking at topics related to Computing, Technology and Management.

– EF Topics: Computer Applications; Peripherals; Data Security; Software Engineering; Recent Developments in ICT; Graphical User Interfaces; Websites.

• English for Academic Purposes (Thursday or Friday)– Materials: articles from English newspapers, magazines and academic journals on

the subject of IT and engineering. – EAP themes: Definition and Description; Cause-and-Effect analysis; Writing an ICT

report; Evaluation.• Next time, we will discuss the Aims and Learning Outcomes
