Student revision ideas

Summarise the texts

Jot down a quick summary of each chapter of a novel or after each poem that is read. This will ensure that students understand and absorb what they have read, as well as making it easier to go back and remember details about the texts later.

Page 11: English examssmartfuse.s3.amazonaws.com/.../2018/03/English-presentation.pdf · English exams Literature Paper 1 AB 22 May 2018 1hr 45mins Literature Paper 2 ABC 25 May 2018 2hr 15mins

Highlighting the most important details in workbooks.

This will help students to identify and quickly reference the most important aspects. Colour-coordinate highlighting to make quickly flipping through your

notes even easier.

For example, use different colours for different literary devices: yellow for metaphor, pink for tone, green for historical details. This is particularly useful if

you are a visual learner.

Consult other sources for more information.

While taking notes on the texts, have a look at sites such as Spark Notes, York Notes, BBC Bitesize and YouTube.

These sites can offer alternate interpretations that will improve and expand notes.

Make flash cards.

Start organising notes and put them onto flash cards. Separate the flash cards into language, structure, theme, form, and context, and jot down the most

important points and quotes incorporating all your sources, including websites, personal interpretations.

Read over these as many times as possible.

Test your knowledge

Beginning well before your exam, attempt as many exam papers as possible. You can find old exam questions and practice questions in the revision guides.

Students should be completing these on a weekly basis and reflecting on the feedback.

Parent revision ideas

• Encourage your son/daughter to ask for help at college on any parts of their work they do not understand.

• Make a revision timetable with them which includes the dates and times of their examinations. Include social time within this and have the revision timetable displayed in the house and check on their progress regularly.

• Help your child understand that it is useful to revise in small chunks of 30-40 minutes. Encourage your child to have a good break and then start again.

Parent revision ideas

• Encourage your child to use a variety of revision strategies such as spider diagrams, mind mapping, revision cards and listing key points. Reading is not enough!

• Make sure they are not revising right up to bedtime, they need to wind down before bed in order to get a good night’s sleep.

• Make sure they have got the right environment to revise. They need a peaceful, dedicated space.

• Working with a friend can be useful because it allows them to test each other and to talk about the work. You might want to encourage group revision sessions by getting some pizza, snacks etc. and making it a fun experience.

Parent revision ideas

• Have incentives linked to reasonable goals and praise them when they have studied well.

• Having mini tests at home will help your child check their understanding of a subject.

• Listen to them, let them talk to you about their work and offload their stress. Be comforting and reassuring.

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

• Encourage healthy eating, especially brain foods like fish and super foods such as; bananas, broccoli, carrots, mangoes and salmon.

• Remind them about the importance of drinking water.

• Make sure they eat breakfast. (If you have not eaten by 10.30am you have the reaction speed of a 70 year old!)

• Take breaks, but no computer games, between revision, only physical exercise.

• Ensure they get adequate sleep. They need to be in bed no later than 10.30pm.
