Verb TensePoetry Analysis

Verb Tense

A Verb’s Tense expresses the time of action or state of being. Verbs have 6 Tenses formed from the principle parts:

Verb Tenses in Order of Time

Past Perfect = existing or happening before a specific time in the past.

I had played video games before I went to bed.


Past = existing or happening in the past.

I played with Jenny yesterday.


Present Perfect = existing or happening sometime before now.

I have played baseball for five years.


Present = existing or happening now.

I still play with my toys.


Future Perfect = existing or happening before a specific time in the future.

Tomorrow by this time, I will have finished playing our game.


Future = existing or happening in the future.

I will play with you this weekend.

Conjugating Verbs

Conjugating a verb is listing all 6 tense forms of a verb. We will now conjugate the verb play in active voice.

Progressive Form

All 6 tenses have a progressive form as well. Progressive form presents continuing action or state of being. (appropriate tense of “be + present participle).

Appropriate tense of “be + present participle:

Present = be, am, is, are Past = was, were

Present Participle = being Past Participle = been

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud By William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze


Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance..


The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:— A poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:


For oft when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude, And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils......

Iambic Tetrameter

Four Sestets (Sextet) = a six line stanza

Lyric = Songlike poetry that expresses private emotions or thoughts.

Alliteration

The repetition of consonant sound in words that are close to one another.


I wandered lonely as a cloud (1)

Assonance

The repetition of similar vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds in words that are close together.

Personification Giving nonhuman things human qualities.

When all at once I saw a crowd, (3)

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.. (12)


I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze


While wandering in a path like a cloud would take, the speaker comes upon a field of daffodils fluttering in the breeze beneath trees on the lake shore.


Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance..


The daffodils spread all along the lake shore reminding the speaker of all the stars in the Milky Way. The speaker is alone yet finds company in the flowers and makes them human like when he sees them as a crowd that is dancing.


The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:— A poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:


As the speaker watched the daffodils out perform the waves in the lake with their dancing, he did not fully realize the impact this experience would have on him and what he will take with him in his memories.


For oft when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude, And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils......


Later on whenever he was at home on his couch, alone, he can recall the memory of the daffodils which fills him with feelings of comfort and joy. To the speaker, he is never then alone.
