There are many indicators of this trend. Venevision International recently announced it would inten-sify its sales of telenovela formats. RCN took a gamble with its first children’s novela, Cuando salga el sol, a production of Video Base & Tejada Asociados for the Colom-bian station. VIP 2000 added to its catalog Aladdin, a children’s telenovela produced in India. Tele-mundo Internacional has been distributing telenovelas from TVN of Chile for a while. It is now adding to the catalog Dance dance dance, a Brazilian novela from Bandeirantes; and it is also distrib-uting Escalera al cielo, from Korea.

AlliAncesAlliances have become one of the main diversification strategies for distributors.

Telefe International just announced an agreement with Canal 13 of Chile for the distribu-tion of its fictions, which include edgier and youthful telenovelas. The agreement provides their clients with an even broader spec-trum of products

Televisa had already adopted this alliance strategy when it signed with Argentinean companies Ideas del Sur and Cris Morena, to co-produce children’s telenovelas; and with Pol-ka, to co-produce fictions for adult audiences. These agreements generated Televisa productions such as Atrévete a soñar, the Mexican version of Patito feo from Ideas del Sur; and Mujeres asesinas, a mediamates production for Televisa based on a Pol-ka series. The Mexican televi-

sion giant also signed a co-pro-duction agreement with Brazil’s Rede Record and GloboMedia Imagina, which will see the creation of a production house to create content for the Spanish market.

seriesSome Latin American distributors, such as Telefe International, have been offering series since the beginning. Others have followed suit, inspired by the worldwide success of companies such as Caracol: After the triumph of Sin tetas no hay paraíso, it produced El cartel, and this year will launch Las fantásticas, and the sequel to El cartel.

A third group started producing series more recently. That is the case of Televisa, which started last year and now has a catalog of

series produced in HD, such as Terminales and Mujeres asesinas. Even Televisa Networks started producing series this year. It premiered Adictos and Plantados on its cable channel Unicable.

Another big player who started producing series is Rede Record. They are introducing at MipTV their first series, The law and the crime. It is a suspense fiction directed by Alexandre Avancini, who also directed Los mutantes, caminos del corazón.

RCN also recently launched a series: Back to the hidden booty, a 26-episode story based on real events, created by Clara María Ochoa and based on a Jörg Hiller story.

Latin American distribution houses, whose international success has mainly derived from telenovelas, are now diversifying their catalogs. This diversification is ocurring within the same genre (addition of children’s telenovelas, current stories and formats), as well as new genres such as series. This trend is boosting production and setting the stage for new alliances.

Telefe International makes its debut distributing these products at this MipTV. “We have great expectations for this MipTV, with the productions of Canal 13 de Chile, both series and formats,” said, Alejandro Parra, Director of International Business Area.

Michelle Wasserman, Head of International Distribution Programming, Formats & Production Services, said they see great potential in the products of Canal 13, and added that the agreement allows them to offer

clients a wider and more varied array of products.

Fiction For all audiencesAmango, El blog de la Feña, Química, and Nadie me entiende, are some of the fictions for children and teenagers that Canal 13 is introducing at this MipTV.

The offering also includes two of the channel’s greatest successes: Machos and Brujas. Both are productions of Verónica Saquel. Machos was broadcast in 2003 with ratings that allowed Canal 13 to regain the evening

primetime leadership. Brujas made its debut in 2005 and outperformed its competitors with ratings of 36.8. It also had excellent results in countries such as Venezuela, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru.

Other products in the catalog include telenovelas such as Don Amor, a Puerto Rican co-production, and Cuenta conmigo - te amo a morir, which premieres this March.

Love in the 60´s, Tentación, Descarado, Gatas y tuercas, and Papi Ricky, are some of the other

titles available as canned shows or formats.

Future projectsSebastián Freund, Director of International Sales of Canal 13 de Chile, indicated that Telefe International’s distribution of Canal 13’s catalog guarantees worldwide exposure for the most successful products of the channel.

He added that with this agree-ment, they are forging an alliance for future projects in different genres and production formats.

“Each one of these genres has contributed to the objective of offering our clients, quality, variety, and volume of products. This allowed Televisa Internacional to enter new markets,” says Carlos Castro, General Director of Sales.

The basis of the catalog will always be Televisa’s production, says Castro. “The licensed products allow us to offer variety, thus representing a complement to the traditional catalog of 100% Televisa productions.”

Licensed productsThe catalog contains licensed products such as Mujeres asesinas, the popular series from media-mates based on a Pol-Ka format. It also includes the telenovela

Atracción x 4, from Ideas del Sur; the format Héroes desconocidos, from DDI; and Lucha libre AAA, among others.

There are also two children’s telenovelas produced by Televisa and based on Argentinean books. The first one is Verano de amor, the Mexican version of Verano del 98 (Cris Morena Group and RGB). It is a refreshing and youthful story produced by Pedro Damián, who also produced the hits Rebelde and Clase 406. It is followed by Atrévete a soñar, format of the successful tele-novela Patito Feo, from Ideas del Sur, that opened on March on Canal de las Estrellas with an average share fo 50.6%.

When asked if the Argentinean children’s product was replacing Televisa Niños’ productions, Castro commented: “No, the Argentinean products are geared more towards juveniles, while Televisa’s are completely aimed at children. Although in both cases, the products can be enjoyed by the entire family.”

cLassic telenovelas, series and formatsThis MipTV sees the debut of En nombre del amor, a more classical production with an internationally acclaimed cast that includes, Victoria Ruffo, Arturo Peniche, and Leticia Calderón.

seasons of SOS and Terminales. The entertainment formats include three innovative ideas: El show de los sueños, Hasta el hoyo, and Telenautas.

a good moment for canned showsConcerning the current market situation, Castro said that, “In a context of financial crisis, the budgets for production and acquisition of content are usually in line with formats that offer a better cost-benefit relation. However, there is no general rule that applies to all markets.” He added that, “in previous years’ crises we have seen an increase in the sales of canned shows. This could happen again in the next few months.”

All of Central and Eastern Europe is important for Telemundo Internacional, but the countries that acquire the highest volume of telenovelas are Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and the CIS (above all Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and the Ukraine). Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia are also included in our top 10 territories.

Telemundo telenovelas are very successful on European TV Channels. One example is Victoria (2008), after setting records in audience at 9pm on Telemundo, the telenovela is generating wonderful results on Acasa TV of Romania at 6:30pm, an extremely difficult slot where the telenovela must compete with the top local news and still manages to gain #1 in the slot on many days. The

novella just launched on LNK of Lithuania where the channel is thrilled with the results.

Pecados ajenos (Second chance, 2007) generated shares of 45% on Balkan News of Bulgaria at 2:30pm, and right now this novella is #1 in its slot on Shant TV of Armenia.

As a final example, Madre luna (Grains of love, 2007) raised the share of Balkan News of Bulgaria’s 5pm slot, it generated shares higher than 50% in Georgia at 4:30pm, maintains a #2 spot at 4:30pm in Romania, and generated very good ratings on Fox TV of Serbia at 3:30pm since its launch in June.

FormatsAlso Telemundo´s telenovela formats have sold extremely well since several years ago. The most

popular formats are Amores de mercado (Market love), Los treinta (30) and Cómplices (Accessory to Love), famous titles from TVN of Chile catalogue, as well as currently El cuerpo del deseo (Second Chance), written by Julio Jimenez.

These formats are produced above all in Russia, Portugal, Greece and Cyprus, and very soon Amores de mercado will be produced in Spain as well for national television.

According to Dago García, Creative VP of Canal Caracol, El cartel, Vecinos, Oye bonita, La quiero a morir and Muñoz vale x 2, were some of the most successful products on Colombian television in 2008. He points out that these favorable results can be attributed to teamwork and clearly defined programming and production policies. These products have also been well received internationally.

2009 will see the arrival of Las fantásticas, a series about the life of the women of the drug trade; and the sequel of El cartel. Both are being produced by Cristina Palacio, partner-producer from newly-formed BE-TV. García also indicated that the telenovelas Nadie rueda como Gabriela Rueda and Bermúdez, are currently in production.

Flor Latina Entertainment Group signed an alliance with Daniel Di Conza and Miguel Ángel Diani, renowned creators of many Argentinean television hits, to distribute their formats worldwide.

One of these formats is the comedy Son de Diez, which aired on Canal 13 of Argentina and obtained ratings of 45 points in the 9 pm slot. It ran four successful seasons in prime time.

Other comedies include La nena, the story of a teenage girl living with her father; and Vivo con un fantasma, which tells the store of a publicist whose dead wife reincarnates in the body of his best friend.

These new formats add to the diversity and multi-target nature of Flor Latina’s international catalog. Silvana D’Angelo and the sales team will be showcasing them to network television buyers from around the world.

Venevision International (VVI) will complement its traditional telenovela programming offering with formats. The company has been producing formats for some years, but now it has created a department that will operate in two areas: the utilization and adaptation of the company’s extensive catalog, and the creation of new formats, both scripted and non-scripted.

César Díaz, VP of Sales of VVI says that, “the emphasis on selling formats reflects the company’s diversification strategy, and that of its president and CEO, Luis Villanueva.” Díaz adds that format sales represent a great opportunity for a company whose products enjoy worldwide success.

Artear, a company of the Grupo Clarín of Argentina, at the end of 2008 created an International Sales department aimed at commercializing both programming and pay-TV signals. Mariana Fernandez (formerly of TBS LatAm), leads the team as its International Sales Manager, Content & Signals. Fernández reports to Guillermo Fatta, Content Sales Manager, Broadcast, Signals & Network. Luciana Egurrola (formerly of Premium Media) is now Senior Sales Executive, Content; and Mariano Martínez Lacarrere (formerly

of HBO LatAm) is Senior Sales Executive, Signals.

The department made its debut at Natpe 2009, and attends MipTV with a catalog that includes journalistic shows, realities, one-offs and telenove-las from Pol-Ka and Ideas del Sur. In the case of telenovelas, it is distribu-ting all titles prior to 2006 (later titles are distributed by Televisa). These include Padre coraje, El sodero de mi vida, 099 central, Gasoleros, Soy gitano, and Hombres de honor.
