Verb comes from the Latin word ‘VERBUM’ which means ‘a word’ .It is so
called because it is the most important word in a sentence .
It is a word that tells something about a person or thing .
A verb may tell us –
1. What a person or thing DOES ;as – Hari laughs .
The clock strikes .
2. What is done to a person or thing ;as- Hari is scolded .
The window is broken .
3.What a person or thing is ,as
The cat is dead.
Glass is brittle
I feel sorry .
Thus a verb is a word used to tell or assert something about some person or
thing.
A verb often consists of more than one word ,as
The girls were singing .
I have learnt my lesson .

Verbs are closely connected to TENSES because every action denoted in a
sentence is actually talking about a particular tense .
Look at the examples below :
1. I sang .
2. I sing .
3. I will sing .
In the above sentences ,sang, sing, will sing are verbs but every verb projects
a tense .For instance ,in the first sentence , sang is past tense ,in sentence 2 ,
sing is present tense and in sentence 3 ,will sing is in the future tense .
So , studying verb is in some way clarifying concepts about tenses too .
Fill the blanks with the correct form of verbs.

AUXILIARY OR HELPING VERBS
Auxiliary verb help the main verb to describe action , that action which happened in the past or is happening in the present or will happen in the future .Some helping verbs are am, is, are ,was, were being,have,has,had,do,does,did,will,would,shall,should,may,might,could,etc.

Temperature
Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a body. The instrument which measures the temperature of body is known as thermometer.
Each thermometer has a scale. Two different temperature scales which are commonly used are:
1. The Fahrenheit Scale
2. The Celsius Scale

Converting the Temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit
In converting the temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit the formula is

In converting the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius the formula is
Example:-
1. Convert 40 °C to the Fahrenheit scale.
= 720 + 32o
= 1040 F
2. Convert 860 F into Celsius.
= 5
9 X ( 860 – 32)
= 5
9 X 54
= 300 C
