Plagiarism: What is it?______________________________________ Simply put, plagiarism is stealing written work from another writer. It is not

“copying” or “borrowing”. It is theft and it could even be considered to be fraud, which

is a crime! No matter what your excuse for turning in someone else’s work as your own,

it is still cheating and very unethical behavior. It can happen at all levels of society and

the definition doesn’t change whether at the high school level or professional.

To prevent turning in a plagiarized paper, a writer must “cite” the work if there is

anything that is not original thought added to the written work. Your teacher will give

you guidelines for the proper method(s) of citing your research paper or any other writing

assignment you may have to complete.

Some examples of plagiarism are:

1) turning in someone else’s work as your own 2) copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit 3) failing to put a quotation in quotation marks 4) giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation 5) changing words by copying the sentence structure of a source without giving

credit 6) copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of

your work, whether you give credit or not. [http://www.plagiarism.org/learning_center/what_is_plagiarism.html]

Don’t forget: citing your sources and giving credit for material you want to use makes

your written work ethical and trustworthy, and a reflection of who you are as a person.

Citing allows you to write papers that other people will want to read and perhaps be

encouraged to continue to do further research on their own.

Be a leader, not a follower. Write your own thoughts and ideas. If you want to

support your ideas with those of others, remember to cite the material properly. It is very

easy to cheat and plagiarize. It is, as well, very easy for your teacher to check to see if

your paper has been plagiarized. Penalties can be severe, so do it right...it is worth it!

English 12B Unit 2: Book Review Assignment – 75 Points Introduction: Have you grumbled about book reports in the past? This is your chance to complete a

book review project as an alternative to a book report. You will show your creativity

and talents by completing an original project to summarize your book. Be creative and

have fun!

STEP 1: Choice: Visit with your instructor about a book to read and review for your

English class. Your teacher has been provided with a list of books that match the themes

of your English class. You may choose from that list or you may choose a book with a

different theme but, be sure your book choice has been approved by the teacher.

The school library or the public library in your community will have other books that

revolve around the same themes as your English class.

Instructor approval:

STEP 2: Format: Next, choose the book review presentation you want to use for your

book review from the following list.

Your book review project must be presented to your class and/or teacher. If your book

project will take special materials to complete, you are responsible for finding those

materials. Your book review project must also be approved by your instructor.

Note: You must choose a different project than was selected in 12A. Follow all requirements carefully! Instructor approval:

English 12B Book Review Project List

1. Create a mini comic book of the book you read that includes a cover and back cover; and 4 inside

pages with information on both sides of the page. Review copies of old and new comic books for ideas. Each page of the story must include written captions. Pages to be included must contain: an introduction, 3 characters, setting, plot, at least 2 story events, the major problem solved, and an intriguing closing that leaves the reader wanting you to create more pages. Use a variety of colors, diagrams, and dialogue in constructing your comic book. Visit with your instructor before starting your comic book project so that you can agree on whether your comic book will be drawn out on paper or completed using technology. You are required to present your comic book to at least 3 people (one must be your teacher) and get their written comments on your product.

2. Create a written and pictorial time line of the story line in the book that you read. Your time line must include at least 12 story event captions and 12 pictures. Get approval from your instructor on the materials and technology to be used to create your time line. Be creative when deciding how to create your pictures. When you are finished with your product present it to your class and/or instructor.

3. Dramatize your book! To make your book appear as if it has been made into a play on Broadway, come to class dressed and made up as the main character and present a 3 minute dramatization of the storyline in the book. For this project, your book has to be one that has not been made into a play or movie. Your presentation should be about one of the conflicts or issues presented in the book. You are required to turn in a written script of your play to your instructor for approval before you present it.

4. Pack your bags! You are joining the characters in the book for a time period in the story you read. Prepare a detailed and concise packing list of what you will need to take along to be prepared for the travel that takes place in your book. Remember, you cannot leave the story in progress and go back home and get something later so be prepared. Then, type up a summary of why each item is important to take along staying true to the storyline in the book. Next, find a bag and pack as many of the items as you can find (without spending money on them) and present your packed bag, detailed packing list, and summary pages to your instructor for grading.

5. Good news, the book you have been reading has just become #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. A major news network wants to interview you on the 6:00 news tonight to get your opinion about the book. In order for you to be prepared, write out 12 questions that the news show might ask you about the book. Ask your instructor to help you anticipate the questions. Then, prepare 12 “detailed” answer note cards so that you can practice before you are interviewed! Turn all of your questions along with the note cards in to your instructor for grading. Act out the interview in front of your class/instructor to see how well you are prepared. Get help to act out the parts if needed.

6. Write your own original book review format here: _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________

English 12B Unit 3: Recycle Story - You can’t blow my house down! – 25 Points

Note: View the video “Narrative Structure” and complete the quiz before completing this assignment. Introduction: Have you ever dreamed of building the ideal green home (environmentally friendly) someday? As natural resources become more and more scarce on our planet, environmental specialists are encouraging us to recycle, reduce, and reuse products. You may remember a popular children’s fairy tale that detailed how a house built of straw could be blown over with a small little puff of air. Well, not anymore! Straw bale homes are becoming more and more popular as construction contractors strive to build homes from “green” materials that help save the environment. Consumers and home buyers are choosing home products that save energy and natural resources. [Persons entering this field fall under the category of Industrial, Manufacturing and Engineering Systems on the Kansas Career Fields Clusters Model.] STEP 1: Research and brainstorm your story. Your task for this narrative writing assignment is to write a short story about a main character who wants to build a dream home that is as earth friendly as possible. In order to brainstorm ideas for your story, you should conduct research about “green” materials and energy saving strategies being used today to build homes. Consider straw bales, rammed earth, cob, adobe, and plastic lumber, just to name a few. You may also want to conduct career research to preview the training options available to become an environmental expert. You are required to find two sources of information about earth friendly materials being used to build homes today. Print at least two pages of information from each source and turn the pages in with your notes along with your final draft. Source 1: ______________________________________________________________ Source 2: ______________________________________________________________ STEP 2: You are required to complete a planning map with detailed notes to turn into your instructor for approval before writing the story. An example of a planning map is included with this assignment. You may choose your own format for the planning map. However, you must include all four planning map story categories included in the example attached. Examples of Planning Maps follow:

English 12B Unit 3: Research Paper – 50 Points Note: Before completing this assignment, you must view the video “Modern Research Skills for Secondary Students: Research 101: Mastering the Library”. Introduction: Wow! You are on the last lap of your high school education and will soon be heading out into the world. Have you thought about what you want to do for a living? What are your skills and talents? Are you a morning person or do you like to stay up late at night? Do you prefer a physical job or one that puts you behind a desk? Do you like to work outdoors, or are you an inside person? Asking yourself these questions can help you determine what career you would like to peruse. For this project, you will select a career of interest to you, conduct research, analyze information, and present your findings in a logical cohesive manner. The intent of your writing is to inform the reader about the selected career. Because you are researching and incorporating information from various sources, it is important to cite those sources, thus avoiding plagiarism. You are required to turn in research notes and a Works Cited page (bibliography) in MLA format. If you need help at any time, feel free to ask your instructor. STEP 1: Define your topic: Give some thought to what you want to do. Think about

your talents and what careers would utilize those abilities. If you are a night person, then

don’t consider a job that would require you to get up early such as running a bakery.

If you are having trouble deciding on a career, ask your instructor to allow you to

complete the questionnaire from English 12A under the assignment “Employment Skills”.

Job Selected: _______________________________________________ Instructor’s Approval: STEP 2: Job Shadowing: After finding the career you would like to research, work with your instructor to set up a job-shadowing opportunity with someone in that field. In the case that a shadowing opportunity is not available, conduct an interview either via e-mail, phone, or in person with someone in that career field. This experience and interview can be considered one of your three sources for your Works Cited page. Prepare a list of questions you want answered before you job shadow or conduct the interview. Leave space after each question to write the answers you receive. This sheet will need to be turned in to your instructor.

STEP 3: Determine information needed: While researching, you need to continually be

asking yourself questions. Good researchers anticipate their reader’s questions and try to

answer them throughout the paper. The video shared some examples of questions you

should ask yourself regarding your topic. In the space below, write three questions you

should ask yourself about the topic you have chosen. This will help you to determine the

information you will need to find.

Question 1: _____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Question 2: _____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ Question 3: _____________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ STEP 4: Find and retrieve information: In the video, it was explained how you locate

and retrieve information in a library as well as on the internet. Head to the library and find

appropriate sources. Choose more sources than you will need, as some of them may not fit

your needs. List them here.

STEP 5: Evaluation: As you anticipate your reader’s questions, you must question the

material you are reading. On-line research presents additional reasons for critical evaluation

of sources as anyone can create a website. Select three sources that relate to your topic (at

least one must be from a library) and complete the following “Resource Reliability Chart”:

1 .From where was your source obtained —internet, library, etc.?

2. What is the intent-- to inform, educate, persuade, or entertain?

3. Is the information relevant and reliable?

4. Who is the author and what expertise do they have on the subject?

5. Is the information recent or outdated?

6. Is the information supported or refuted by other sources? If so, which sources?

7. Is the information unbiased or does it tend to be one-sided?

8. Is this a source I want to use for my paper? Why or why not?

STEP 6: Organize: With all these sources of information, it is hard to know what

source gives you what information about your topic. This is why note cards are so

handy. Skim your sources, picking out key information that answers the questions you

have written to research. Following the format in the video, create note cards on

important information you find in the book. Have your instructor review your note

cards before you proceed.

STEP 7: Outline: Once you have some ideas and have done some research and created

your note cards, begin organizing your thoughts by creating an outline. An outline

worksheet is attached. Fill it out. Turn it in to your instructor for approval with your

note cards attached.

STEP 8: First Draft: Write your paper following your outline. The first paragraph

should include your thesis statement and introduce the reader to your subject. The body

of your paper should have one or more paragraphs on each of the main points. The

conclusion should sum up what your paper is about and leave the reader with a lasting

thought. Remember to use appropriate transitions to connect ideas within and between

paragraphs, and vary your sentence structure and length. Type your paper. It should be a

minimum of 10 pages, double spaced, and in 12-point Times New Roman font and

include a bibliography in MLA format. Turn in your paper, with attached note cards, for

your instructor to review.

Directions: How to create an outline:

The purpose of an outline is to organize your thoughts and material. A good outline is the most important step in writing a good paper. As you research, you will have much more material than you will be able to use. The outline puts things into perspective and order so you can then write a good paper.

Something to remember when you begin to organize the building of your outline is that if you have a Roman numeral “I”, you must then have Roman numeral “II”. This is true of the entire structure. If you have point “A”, you must have point “B”, with sub-information following the same pattern, as shown below. Notice the writer used at least two items for each category, sometimes three. You may use more than that, but not less than two.

Another important thing to remember is that all of your information must relate to the topic of your first Roman numeral. Make sure that all your points flow logically from INTRODUCTION to BODY, and to CONCLUSION.

English 12B Unit 3: Job Description Introduction: You got the job! All that hard work you spent on preparing your resume, researching

the company, and honing your job interview skills paid off! Are you a little concerned

that you don’t know exactly what your job will involve? Yes, they hinted in the

interview and threw out a few things that you will be responsible for, but wouldn’t it be

nice to have it spelled out for you? Many companies write up job descriptions. This lets

both the employee and the employer know what to expect. Often these job descriptions

are used when an employee is being evaluated to see how well he or she completed the

required tasks. It can also come in handy when being asked to do more than you were

told would be required of you. Perhaps you could use this information to ask for an

increase in your salary, or to get assistance.

[Persons completing similar tasks fall under the category of Human Resources and Services on the Kansas Career Fields and Clusters Model.]

For this assignment, you will be required to write a job description about the career

area you selected for your research paper. To make the job description more personal,

you need to include a graphic (picture or chart) of some sort.

STEP 1: Research: Complete the “Job Description” chart with relevant information

about your career choice. Cite the sources you have used in a Works Cited page.

STEP 2: First Draft: Utilizing the information you have written in the chart, type up a

job description. It needs to be a one page, well organized, neatly written document.

Make sure the different categories are identified, and the information is easy to read. Be

sure to include a graphic! Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Turn in to your

instructor for review.

STEP 3: Final Draft: Make the necessary corrections, and then turn your final copy in

to be graded.

English 12 B Unit 4: Informative Speech Introduction: You are really excited about a new hobby you have started. You have become quite the expert on the subject, and now you have been asked to share your knowledge with a local group. Or maybe your employer has asked you to instruct others on an aspect of your work, such as employee benefits, or operating a specific machine. Don’t panic! You will do a great job. You just need to do some preparation and you will be fine. This type of presentation is known as an informative speech. You will be explaining factual information to your audience. For this project you will be speaking on the career you wrote your research paper on earlier. The good news is that you have already completed the research! STEP 1: Choosing a topic: You will use the topic you choose on a career area for your research paper. STEP 2: Research your topic: Done! This should be covered in your paper on careers! STEP 3: Writing the Speech: Prepare the first draft. Yes, you should write multiple drafts of your speeches just like your English papers. I know, I know, this seems like a waste of time, but actually it will help you prepare a better speech and help you be ready for the performance.

1) Introduction a. Get your audience’s attention with a story, an amazing fact, a quotation, a

question or similar attention grabber. b. Be sure to mention in your introduction what the speech is about without

saying, “Today I’m going to tell you about ….” 2) Body

a. Organize the facts about your subject in a logical order. Your audience will understand the speech better if it is organized well.

b. Use transitions between paragraphs to lead your listener through your speech.

c. Make sure that you discuss facts thoroughly. Anticipate potential questions your audience may have and try to answer those.

3) Conclusion a. Tie everything back together with a conclusion. b. Often the conclusion refers back to the introduction. c. Do not thank your audience for listening (it is their job as an audience to

listen to you and you are worth listening to!) d. Avoid saying things like, “And that’s it.”

Read your speech out loud and fine tune your words. Some parts will roll off your tongue easier than others. Make sure you feel comfortable with the wording you have used. Rewrite your speech, making corrections

STEP 4: Practice: You may be surprised that you are required to give your speech with minimal notes. Make yourself a note card that contains an outline of your speech including phrases that you find particularly well-written. Be sure to write legibly on your card. You should not rewrite the entire speech on the card because this is a recipe for disaster. For example, getting lost while performing and then having to stand silent while you find your place is terribly awkward. Performers who do this typically sound less knowledgeable than those who do not. Read your speech to yourself and out loud over and over again seeing how much you remember each time. STEP 5: Presentation:

• When it is time to perform your speech, try to relax. Though you are supposed to have it memorized—with only a little help from your note card—your typical audience will not know if you miss a sentence if you just keep speaking without stammering or using fillers such as “um”.

• Relax some more…the best cure for nerves is to be over prepared.

• Arrive at your speaking engagement a bit early

• Be mindful of what you are doing with your hands and feet while you speak. Try

to eliminate any pacing or gestures that are distracting to your audience.

• Present your speech in a mirror and complete the attached evaluation form. List anything you feel you need to change. Practice your speech until you have corrected your problems and feel it is ready.

• Complete the evaluation form with a second performance.

• Present your speech to your instructor.
