Commas can be easily overseen. Here

is a list of 5 easily mistaken problems

people have when it comes to misusing

commas.

Use commas to separate independent clauses

when they are joined by any of these seven

coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor,

so, yet.

Example:

I like ketchup, but I do not like tomatoes.

Use a comma to separate the elements in

a series (three or more things), including

the last two.

Example:

He ran to the store, got what he needed,

and ran back home.

Use commas when talking to

someone.

Example:

Correct: Time to eat, Grandma.

Incorrect: Time to eat Grandma.

Use commas between a state and city and

a date and the year.

Example:

Correct: I was born in Rhinebeck, NY on September 28 th,

1991.

Incorrect: I was born in Rhinebeck NY on September 28 th

1991.

Use a comma to set off or separate

nonessential words or phrases in a sentence

from the main clause of the sentence.

Example:

“Caitlin, my friend, is sitting next to me while

I do my presentation.”
