Definition:
When something concrete (such as a person, place, thing, or event) represents something abstract (like an idea, emotion, or quality)
Engagement ring = Marriage, love, fidelity, etc.
Crown = Royalty, power, wealth
Flag = Patriotism, pride, liberty
Skull and crossbones = Danger, death, piracy
Come up with two examples of your own!
Look at examples #1-5 on your notes and consider… What might an EAGLE symbolize? What might a ROSE symbolize?
Symbols are often visual.
When some event, object, or setting is used as a symbol, it often reappears throughout the story.
A symbol usually has something to do with a story’s THEME.
Definition:
A story in which the characters and settings are symbols, meaning they represent abstract ideas or moral qualities.
