Fitch H. Beach Award Nominees

This endowed award recognizes the most outstanding graduate researchers within

the College of Engineering. Each department nominates one PhD student, and

awards are based on a review of students’ academic and professional records and

on an oral presentation of their research. Awardees receive stipends, a certificate,

and a medal to be worn at graduation.

The following students have been nominated by their departments for the Fitch H.

Beach Award for Outstanding Graduate Research, and will present their research

at the Symposium.

n Gloria Lehr (CHEMS): Engineering Ytterbium-Based Alloys for Space-

Based Cooling Applicationsn Venkat Ramakrishnan (ME): Vibration Phenomena: From Wind Turbines

to Hockey Sticksn Soweon Yoon (CSE): Fingerprint Recognition: Models and Applicationsn Ruan Zhenhua (BAE): A Solar-Bio-Powered Lignocellulosic Biodiesel

Refi neryn Zheng Fan (ECE): Nanotube Fountain Pen: Towards 3D Printing

of Metallic Nanostructuresn Purushotham Pakala (CEE): Strategies for Enhancing Fire Performance

of Connections in Steel Framed Structures

MSUFCU Research Translation Award

This competition, funded by a grant from the MSU Federal Credit Union, seeks

to inspire students to think about commercial applications of their research and

develop research posters that clearly communicate this potential, and to spark

conversations and make connections between students, projects, and potential

industry collaborators. A committee of judges drawn from industry representatives

will review research posters submitted to the Engineering Graduate Research

Symposium and select two winners; the first-place awardee will receive $2,000

and the second-place awardee will receive $500.

Outstanding Graduate Student Awards

This award recognizes the most outstanding graduate student in each program,

as selected by the faculty within the department. Recipients receive a stipend,

certifi cate, and a medal to be worn at graduation. The 2013–14 Outstanding

Graduate Students are listed below.

n Rui Chen, Biosystems Engineering (advisor: Wei Liao)n Phillip Angart, Chemical Engineering (advisor: Pat Walton)n Robert Schmidt, Materials Science (advisor: Eldon Case) n Yi Sun, Civil Engineering (advisor: Rigoberto Burgueño)n Indumathy Jayamani, Environmental Engineering (advisor: Alison Cupples)n Soweon Yoon, Computer Science (advisor: Anil K. Jain)n Zheng Fan, Electrical Engineering (advisor: Lixin Dong)n Brian Weaver, Engineering Mechanics (advisor: Roger Haut)n Smruti Ranjan Panigrahi, Mechanical Engineering (advisor: Brian Feeny)

Research Posters

More than 220 graduate students, representing all nine programs in our six

Engineering departments, will present research posters at the Symposium. This

program lists poster titles, poster numbers, and authors by department; complete

abstracts are available online and QR codes are provided for easy access to the

abstracts from each program.

Within the Breslin Center Concourse, posters are arranged by department and

poster numbers increase in a clock-wise direction, starting from the ticket lobby

entrance. Along the outer wall of the Concourse you will find Civil Engineering

(CE), Electrical Engineering (ECE), Materials Science (MSE), and Environmental

Engineering (ENE). Along the inner wall are located Mechanical Engineering

(ME), Computer Science (CSE), Chemical Engineering (CHE), and Biosystems

Engineering (BAE).
