I have known UBEL as a capable construction company since long. I am now privileged and proud to be a part of this organization.
What is it that you like about the work culture of UBEL?
Within a short period what I could observe is that the working atmosphere is quite transparent and professionalism is practiced with a human touch as also there is a substantial personal rapport. This is a perfect blend to ensure consistently positive results out of team work.
What are your plans for UBEL as the COO?
UBEL is now in a niche group of all such g loba l l y acc la imed eng ineer ing companies who have a strong In-House resource base, an ultra-modern fabrication facility and a healthy DNA of construction credentials. This has to continuously, healthily and expeditiously evolve so that we also start getting identified as an equally reliable EPC player providing composite solutions from “Concept to Commissioning …. & Beyond”.
Are there any improvements, changes that you are planning for the company?
Exigencies in the “EPC Avatar” will automatically enlighten and guide us towards implementing the necessary changes in our endeavors for overall growth.
Your message to UBEL colleagues via Facebook
We have traditionally been known as a capable and reliable construction contractor. The pride of being in this league has to be justifiably and collectively transformed with full dedication so as to place us also on the platform alongside globally acclaimed EPC companies.
A broad and dedicated client base, increased internal and external customer delight as also a healthy bottom-line will be a natural corollary of all our efforts in this direction.
Let us enter the NEW YEAR 2011…. a NEW DECADE prepared for New Challenges, New Goals, New Optimism, New Approach, New Mission and Achievable Resolutions. Wishing You All, A Wonderful New Year, Where Dreams Become a Reality, Success Becomes Routine and Happiness A Habit.
While striving to further the technological and financial health of your organization, do give good attention to your own Physical, Psychological and Moral health, as well, for mutual benefit.
Your views about our in house magazine and what would you like us to incorporate in the coming issues.
An excellent effort to further the sense of belonging within the organization. With increased participation from all of us, I am sure of this newsletter proving to be a prized possession and getting better each quarter.
HSE awareness and enlightenment along with natural benefits of quality consciousness must be propagated for overall benefit.
The working atmosphere is quite

Dear Colleagues,
Communication is about hearing…
Communication is about thinking…
Communication is about understanding..
I am proud to say that FACEBOOK has now established itself as the voice of UBEL.
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the excellent work taking place in UBEL's world. A new Joint Venture company formed between VJM Group and Osmap Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (An Italian Company) will be known as “UB-Ostan India Ltd.” This is a manufacturing Unit of Plastic Moulded Parts. We are sure this association will mean a lot of exciting opportunities for us. I am sure that you are already involved in some way or the other in this new venture and your contribution will go a long way towards making this a success. This may mean we need to change the way we do things. Embracing changes facing our business will help us to meet our targets for the future, always keeping in mind that
change is an essential part of our progress. This in turn will help us deliver the necessary improvements in order to meet our customers' needs.
We had announced a photography contest in the last issue, for which we received some excellent contributions. Congratulations to all winners. Look out for more competitions in the future issues.
The Sports activities are now in full swing. We conducted various matches in Badminton, Carrom, Chess, Table Tennis and it was wonderful to see our colleagues bring out the sportsman spirit in themselves. All the fun and cheering made the colleagues forget their work, worries and stress!
As another year unfolds, new paths we have to tread. We wonder what life holds in the brand New Year ahead. My special wish for you to make this your happiest year filled with joy, peace and love. Wish you all a very prosperous and happy 2011 !!

We made a reentry in ESSAR STEEL- Hazira in the year 2003 with
small orders like attending to existing plant with a capacity of
3.9 MTPA. ESSAR decided to enhance the capacity up to 10.5
MTPA and thereby several projects had been planned, such as
Steel melting plant, 5 meter wide plate Mill, Continuous casting
Plant, Blast Furnace, Corex Gas holder and others.
By virtue of our credibility we were awarded jobs including open
yard fabrication (so far we have completed 60,000 MT of
structure, equipment, ducting etc.) and most of the Project were
completed on schedule. As on date we have erected more than
1,00,000 MT of structure/equipment and around 7,00,000 INM
of piping at ESSAR. Our average pick strength in the project is
around 2500 people. Along with the projects at ESSAR we have
executed some prestigious projects at RIL – Hazira, GNFC-
Bharuch and 370 MW CCPP at Utran (Surat).
Out of the above the most prestigious projects is being executed
by us is Corex. When we were offered this job by ESSAR, we did
not know the details of the project and did extensive
preparations before taking up the project. We repeatedly
watched video photography of erected plant at Korea to
understand the same as there were no engineering drawings
available with ESSAR. This project was erected at South Korea
12 years back and was non
operative. It was dismantled and
brought to India.
The final Product of COREX is
liquid Steel (Liquid Hot Metal ).
Liquid hot metal for production
of steel or pig Iron for foundry
has been traditionally produced
in the blast furnace using
metallurgical coke, produced
from coking coal as a energy
supplier. This calls for an
a l t e r n a t i v e i r o n m a k i n g
technology and a lso for
conserv ing the deplet ing
reserves of good quality coking
Making a breakthrough coal, making use of non coking coal. This is
basically a Smelting Reduction (SR) process to
smelt the pre-reduction iron ore/sinter/pellets
with non- coking coal and oxygen in a reactor
called Melter Gasifier (MG).The COREX
technology is based on the physical separation of
reduction and melting process, which are carried
out in two reactors. In the Melter Gasifier,
reduction gas is generated and liquid hot metal is
produced. The reduction shaft (RS) which is
located above the Melter gasifier, is designed for
the reduction of iron Oxide.
COREX is a commercially and technologically
proven alternate routes of Iron making. While
even today most of the hot metal or liquid iron is
produced through the giant blast furnace route,
very small fraction of Iron is produced through
the alternate routes. COREX process gives
advantage of power generation and makes
integrated steel complex totally independent of petro based
products due to availability of COREX gas as fuel.
This is 2nd project in India and 4th in the world. Having a 108
meter high tower with several associated units like stock house,
coal drying plant, coal blending stations, cast house, pump
house, pipe bridges, de-dusting system for different units, skip,
skip charging stations etc. Our scope in terms of volume is
refurbishment and erection of structure – 27500 MT,
Equipment – 16590 MT, Ducting -5500 MT and piping 5,10,000
INM.
In spite of constraints like traceability of materials, delay in
arriving the shipment, non availability of individual (Item)
weight, frequent stoppages of work due to land acquisition, our
team had achieved many targets.
In this project we have achieved 3200 MT of Erection and 48000
IND welding in single month, weighing 198 MT of reduction
shaft at EL.53.00 meter erected as a single piece. Our quality of
work, process and safety measures are highly appreciated by the
client.
One Corex with all its associates is ready and given for the
commissioning and the other one is near completion and our
team is putting all its efforts
to complete it within the
schedule.
My sincere thanks to my
team members including
technicians who have
p a r t i c i p a t e d a n d
contributed to this project
and my superiors who
supported me to help us
complete the pro ject
successfully.

Journey to Success
Project : Development and up-gradation of Bhopal – Berasia – Sironj Road in the State of Madhya Pradesh on BOT Basis.
Client : Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC)
Length of the project : 106.90 Kms.
Project Value: Rs.176 Crores
Concession Period : 25 Years
The project stretch is a road segment of State Highway 23 (SH-23) situated on the North-Western part of Madhya Pradesh between Km. 4/100 and Km.111/000 and it connects Guna City located on National Highway 3 (NH-3) on the West and Bina on the East. The proposed road is to be widened to 2-Lane undivided carriageway width with 1.5 m paved shoulder at urban locations and 2.5m unpaved shoulder at rural locations. Two toll plazas are proposed on the entire stretch.
Once the proposed road is constructed, it will become the most convenient and the shortest route for the traffic coming from Guna side through NH-3 and going to Bhopal. On the other hand, Bina, which is known for the presence of a lot of heavy industries, the upcoming refinery of Bharat Petroleum will further add on to the huge traffic potential on the proposed road. Moreover, a lot of stone mines fall on this stretch which itself generates a lot of traffic by means of transporting aggregate to various locations, close to Bhopal.
Overall, we foresee that the project stretch has got a huge traffic potential and will generate a good amount of revenue from the toll collection.
Client MPRDC, is very supportive and willing to co-operate at every instance when the need arises. We therefore, are keen to work with this client and look forward to a happy beginning and hope it will lay foundation in the field of Infrastructure development.

In order to meet growing competition and global business environmental Indian companies are left with no choice but to continuously improve their activities regardless of the in difficulty they are in.
Organisations should devote themselves to increased customer satisfaction and create management system which responds quickly to the environmental changes. They have to constantly seek improvement in both quality and productivity for servicing the present challenge.
Mr. Yasushi Fukeda a well known consultant from Japan compares a corporate to a fruit bearing Tree. A Tree rooted solidly in rich soil spread its trunks, grow leaves and bear fruit. While tolerating severe natural conditions. In the same way a company with solid economic foundation successfully delivers its output. Like a Tree with good nutrition bears quality fruit, a corporation with high productivity gives quality output. The purpose of implementing an integrated approach of increased productivity in each sphere and quality job makes a company an energetic company with positive attitude and power to act.
Productivity improvement is a process by which an input is converted to higher output. The key factors are technology and management system. These can be effectively utilized only with good human resources. The success in Japan is also due to emphasis placed on human factor.
Employees/Management cooperation is one of the major pillars of Japanese productivity in Japan. Employees are recognized as the core of the productivity and company performance improvement. With sufficient involvement of all the employees and their positive attitude towards improvement activities, both technology and management systems we can achieve productivity and improved quality system.
Activities like building a positive work culture is called foundation building. This can be characterized by following features.
1. All employees are willing to participate in improvement activities for the working environment, day to day operation, conserving energy and materials.
2. Individual or group of employees become willing to give suggestion for improvement, no matter how small it may be.
3. All managers take initiative and offer support to encourage and motivate employees to participate in such improvement activities.
4. All employees are well trained in basic problem solving technique.
Foundation building programme has three basic concepts.A= Positive work attitude.B= 5S (Good housekeeping practice)C= GEMBA (Actual work place) (a) Kaizen concept and techniques. (b) WASTE elimination. (c) 5S good housekeeping practice. To be continued………….

It is an honour for me to express my humble feelings regarding Swami Vivekananda through “FACEBOOK”.
Vivekananda said that his mission was “man-making”. A country is great not by the number of its people, but by the kind of people it has. According to Vivekananda, an ideal man is he who has three “H” – Heart to feel, Head to think and Hand to work. Of these, heart he valued most.
“If your heart and head conflict, follow the heart”, he said. A heartless man who is intelligent and active is worse that an animal. Vivekananda warned people against “heartless intellectuals”, for they do more harm than good. “A true man is he who is strong as strength itself and yet possesses a woman's heart”, he said.
When Vivekananda uses the “man”, he does not mean any particular country, or community. He means mankind itself. Man is same everywhere, different languages, pigment of skin and other features notwithstanding and it was for this man that Vivekananda gave his all and was ready to give still more. In a letter to Mary Hale, he wrote, “May I be born again and again, and suffer thousands of miseries so that I may worship the only God that exists…., the only God I believe in, the sum total of all souls; and above all my God the wicked, my God the miserable, my God the poor of all races, of all species, is the special object of my worship.
It is interesting to note the contrast between what he said to the people of the west and to his own people. He was impressed by Western Progress but warned the west against their craze for money and material comforts. He upheld before them Indian ideas pointing out to them that India's strength lay in the world of spirit. She shows the way to conquer oneself not to conquer others. She has taught humanity how to live in love and peace.
Back home, he criticized his countrymen for their laziness and inactivity. To them, he spoke highly of western affluence, for he knew this affluence was the outcome of science and hard work, which India lacked. He saw no special merit in a starving indulging in moral and spiritual dialectics. “First bread, and then religion” he said, echoing his Teacher who said “No religion on an empty stomach”

Is a leader born or made?
Good leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. A simple definition of leadership is that leadership is the art of motivating people to act towards achieving a common goal.
In order to become a good leader, one must have the experience, knowledge, will-power, patience, and most importantly the skill to convince others.
Boss or Leader?
Although your position as a manager, supervisor, lead, etc. gives you the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives in the organization, this power does not make you a leader, it simply makes you the boss.
Principles of LeadershipKnow yourself and seek self-improvement Be technically proficient Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions Make sound and timely decisions Set the example Know your people and look out for their well-being Keep your employees informed Develop a sense of responsibility in your employeesEnsure that tasks are understood, supervised, and accomplished Train as a teamUse the full capabilities of your organization
Is Leading different than Managing (Pros & Cons)
Yes, leading is different than planning, organizing and coordinating because leading is focused on influencing people, while the other functions are focused on "resources" in addition to people.
New Style of Leadership
In the organizations of the past, leaders were the people in charge. Their leadership was derived from the power of their position in the organization. The old idea of leadership was reward & punishment, position and control.
Leadership in the new millennium is based on the person's knowledge, vision, values, inspiration and skills. Anyone can lead from anywhere at any time. The new leadership is not based on the job title in the organization or the salary of the person.
If the person tries to hold all power and authority he will miss a great opportunity of utilizing the talents and skills of people around him/her. Leadership should be shared and must come from many places within the organization. The new leadership is based on “personal power”.
